RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the associations between obesity parameters and the risk of hyperuricemia among Korean adults by sex, age, and diabetes mellitus status. METHODS: This study analyzed data from 17,753 adults from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2016-2018. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and general and abdominal obesity with the risk of hyperuricemia (serum uric acid ≥7.0 mg/dL in men and ≥6.0 mg/dL in women). RESULTS: Of all the participants, 12.7% (n = 2256) had hyperuricemia. The age-adjusted mean serum uric acid levels increased significantly with increasing BMI and WC (P for trend <0.001). The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of hyperuricemia increased as BMI and WC increased in both sexes (P for trend <0.001). General (OR 1.98, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.69-2.32) and abdominal (OR 2.21, 95% CI: 1.89-2.58) obesity in men and general (OR 3.26, 95% CI: 2.60-4.09) and abdominal (OR 3.43, 95% CI: 2.69-4.37) obesity in women were associated with higher risks of hyperuricemia. These associations were prominent in women. The association between abdominal obesity and hyperuricemia persisted after additional adjustments for BMI in both sexes. Significant interactions were observed in younger adults and individuals without diabetes mellitus. CONCLUSION: Increased BMI and WC, and general and abdominal obesity, may be important risk factors for hyperuricemia in both sexes. Women, young adults, and individuals without diabetes mellitus require particular attention to prevent obesity and hyperuricemia.

Carboxylate-functionalized organic nanocrystals (ONCs) derived from perylene diimide or naphthalene diimide were synthesized and carefully characterized as novel high-capacity uranium (U(VI)) sorbents. Adsorption studies using uranyl ions demonstrated that the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups on the surface of the ONCs play pivotal roles in U(VI) adsorption. ONCs formed from the condensation of perylene dianhydride and aminoisophthalic acid exhibit very high U(VI) adsorption capacities of 1393 mg g-1 comparable to the highest capacity ever reported. The adsorption kinetics of the ONCs were found to obey the second-order model, indicating that chemisorption is the rate-determining step for U(VI) adsorption by these materials. Furthermore, the perylene-based ONC containing imidazole exhibited no pH dependency upon the U(VI) adsorption and the naphthalene-based ONC was able to remove up to 97.5% U(VI) from simulated nuclear industrial effluent containing many competing elements. These findings will facilitate the development of high-performance organic U(VI) sorbents with high densities of adsorption sites.

Despite their remarkable properties, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) present vulnerable structures that are sensitive to moisture; therefore, their application to real field situations is challenging. Herein, an O2 plasma technique was introduced as a new method for the activation and protection of porosity in HKUST-1. In an unprecedented manner, O2 plasma-treated HKUST-1 retains its porosity after a long exposure to moisture as compared to pristine HKUST-1. Porosity retention was examined by N2 adsorption/desorption measurements of non-activated HKUST-1 after exposure to moisture.

RESUMO

We report a new approach for photoinduced reduction of Cu2+ that will enrich the structural diversity of coordination complexes and be a valuable contributor to the development of Cu+/Cu0-based catalysts. To realize controlled Cu2+ reduction, coumarin as a triplet quencher of excited benzophenone was tethered to Cu(ii)-metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs). The photoinduced catalytic activity of the coumarin-MOPs was also examined in a Cu(i)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC).

Herein we report for the first time the synthesis of Cr(II)-based metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) and the characterization of their porosities. Unlike the isostructural Cu(II)- or Mo(II)-based MOPs, Cr(II)-based MOPs show unusually high gas uptakes and surface areas. The combination of comparatively robust dichromium paddlewheel units (Cr2 units), cage symmetries, and packing motifs enable these materials to achieve Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas of up to 1000 m2/g. Reducing the aggregation of the Cr(II)-based MOPs upon activation makes their pores more accessible than their Cu(II) or Mo(II) counterparts. Further comparisons of surface areas on a molar (m2/mol cage) rather than gravimetric (m2/g) basis is proposed as a rational method of comparing members of a family of related molecular materials.
