RESUMO

Eight carbon (C8) compounds are the key characteristic flavors of mushrooms. The quantitative analysis of the volatiles in mushrooms is challenging especially with the unattended HS-SPME-GC-MS. An unattended HS-SPME-GC-MS/MS in combination with novel sample preparation of the complete control of volatile emissions was developed for the quantitation of the C8 volatiles in mushrooms. The sample preparation strategy was composed of freeze-drying, rehydration, and the addition of a 15% citric acid solution. With this strategy, the volatile emission from mushroom was fully controlled at a certain time point. This method was found to be highly reliable, sensitive, precise, and accurate. This method was successfully applied to measure the contents of the C8 volatiles in the beech, button, and shiitake mushrooms. 1-Octene-3-ol was the most predominant compound in the mushrooms, representing 62.4, 69.0, and 89.2% of the total C8 volatiles in the beech, button, and shiitake mushrooms, respectively.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to investigate mandibular deformation under clenching and to estimate its effect on the stability of orthodontic mini-implants (OMI). METHODS: Three finite element models were constructed using computed tomography (CT) images of 3 adults with different mandibular plane angles (A, low; B, average; and C, high). An OMI was placed between #45 and #46 in each model. Mandibular deformation under premolar and molar clenching was simulated. Comparisons were made between peri-orthodontic mini-implant compressive strain (POMI-CSTN) under clenching and orthodontic traction forces (150 g and 200 g). RESULTS: Three models with different mandibular plane angles demonstrated different functional deformation characteristics. The compressive strains around the OMI were distributed mesiodistally rather than occlusogingivally. In model A, the maximum POMI-CSTN under clenching was observed at the mesial aspect of #46 (1,401.75 microstrain [µE]), and similar maximum POMI-CSTN was observed under a traction force of 150 g (1,415 µE). CONCLUSIONS: The maximum POMI-CSTN developed by clenching failed to exceed the normally allowed compressive cortical bone strains; however, additional orthodontic traction force to the OMI may increase POMI-CSTN to compromise OMI stability.

The anti-diarrheal and spasmolytic activities of Soonkijangquebo (SKJQB), a Korean herbal anti-diarrheal formulation, were subjected to pharmacological evaluation. SKJQB, at a dose of 50-200 mg/kg, inhibited castor oil-induced diarrhea in mice. The median effective dose (ED50) for the anti-diarrheal effect was 93 mg/kg. In isolated rabbit jejunum preparations, SKJQB produced a spasmolytic effect by the relaxation of spontaneous contractions in a dose-dependent manner. The median effective concentration (EC50) for the spasmolytic effect was 3.6 mg/ml. In isolated guinea pig ileum preparations, SKJQB also produced a spasmolytic effect by reduction of acetylcholine-induced contractions. When tested against calcium channel blockade in rabbit jejunum, SKJQB caused a dose-dependent rightward shift in the Ca2+ dose-response curves, similar to that produced by verapamil, a well-known calcium antagonist. In an acute toxicity study in Sprague-Dawley rats, the median lethal dose (LD50) of SKJQB was greater than 2000 mg/kg, and no pathological changes were noticed in macroscopic examination by necropsy of rats treated with SKJQB. Thus, SKJQB may be safely used as a spasmolytic as well as an anti-diarrheal agent.
