RESUMO

Decreasing low molecular weight can improve the digestibility and availability of ingredients such as sodium alginate. This study aimed to test the four dosages of low molecular weight sodium alginate (LMWSA) (0%: Control, 0.05%: 0.5 LMWSA, 0.10%: 1.0 LMWSA, and 0.2%: 2.0 LMWSA) in whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) (3.88 ± 0.25 g) for eight weeks. After finishing the trial, shrimp were exposed to cadmium (1 mg/L) for 48 h. While feed conversion ratio (FCR) improved in shrimp fed dietary 2.0 LMWSA (p < 0.05), there was no significant difference in growth among treatments. The results showed a linear relation between LMWSA level and FCR, and glutathione S-transferase (GST) before; and malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), GST, and alanine transaminase (ALT) after cadmium stress (p < 0.05). The GST, MDA, ALT, and aspartate transaminase (AST) contents were changed after stress but not the 2.0 LMWSA group. The survival rate after stress in 1.0 LMWSA (85.23%) and 2.0 LMWSA (80.20%) treatments was significantly higher than the Control (62.05%). The survival rate after stress negatively correlated with GST and ALT, introducing them as potential biomarkers for cadmium exposure in whiteleg shrimp. Accordingly, the 2.0 LMWSA treatment had the best performance in the abovementioned parameters. As the linear relation was observed, supplementing more levels of LMWSA to reach a plateau is recommended.

RESUMO

A 7-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the combined effects of propionic acid (PA, 5 or 10 g/kg) and a multi-strain Bacillus spp. (Bacillus subtilis IS02 (accession no. JN856456) and B. licheniformis IBRC-M 11,319) (1.7 × 107 CFU/g) probiotic in a plant protein source (PP)-rich diet (∼70% of dietary protein derived from PP sources) on performance of Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) fry (initial body weight 2.97 ± 0.11 g). In this regard, six isoproteic (∼48%) diets were formulated as follows: a control (without supplementation of the additives); probiotic (only contained Bacillus spp. mixture); 5 g PA/kg diet; 10 g PA/kg diet; probiotic + 5 g PA/kg diet, and probiotic + 10 g PA/kg diet. Specific growth rate in fish fed with 10 g PA/kg (2.84 ± 0.1%) and diets contained blends of probiotic and PA (2.76 ± 0.19% in probiotic + 5 g PA, and 2.79 ± 0.04% in probiotic + 10 g PA) was better than in the control (2.45 ± 0.1%) (P < 0.05). Feed conversion ratio in fish fed with 10 g PA/kg (0.92 ± 0.12) and diets contained blends of probiotic and PA (0.94 ± 0.06 in probiotic + 5 g PA and 0.91 ± 0.02 in probiotic + 10 g PA) was better than in the control (1.24 ± 0.08) (P < 0.05). Digestive enzymes including α-amylase, total alkaline proteases, and bile salt dependent lipase activities improved in fish fed diets contained additives. The activity of glutathione-S-transferase and glutathione reductase enhanced in the liver of fish fed diets contained additives. The relative abundance of lysozyme, interleukin 1ß, and insulin-like growth factor-1 genes mRNA transcript showed multifold increase in the liver of fish fed with the 10 g PA/kg and diets contained blends of probiotic and PA (P < 0.05). By considering the above mentioned results, supplementing a PP-rich diet with 10 g PA/kg diet or combination of PA and a mixture of Bacillus spp. probiotic recommended for L. calcarifer.

RESUMO

Many ecologically important and valuable fisheries marine species have been misidentified in terms of both the statistical data and market demand. Correct identification at the species level and the population genetic structure of the orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides), a precious fish in the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea, was tested using mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (DNA barcoding) and D-loop sequencing. The results revealed that the Epinephelus species found in the region, including E. coioides, E. bleekeri, E. polylepis, and E. chlorostigma were all mistakenly grouped together and identified as only E. coioides. Moreover, the analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) of E. coioides samples using the D-loop showed a significantly unique genetic structure (ΦST = 0.068, p < 0.001) within the E. coioides population throughout the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea, with the pairwise genetic difference between sampling locations in UAE and the Iranian coast. Moreover, D-loop sequences analysis showed two distinct haplotype groups scattered among the sampling locations, which did not correlate with the geographic distance between the sampling locations. These findings indicate that the issue of misidentification should be highlighted in the management and conservation of E. coioides. As this type of misidentification is likely to happen to other threatened marine species as well, the efficacy of using genetic markers for the correct identification, both at the species and the population level, is vital.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The enhancement of fish immune system and growth performance throughout the administration of bio-friendly agents such as diet supplements (taurine) is considered a promising alternative in farmed aquatic species. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was aimed to examine the effect of supplementation of dietary taurine (0, 5 g-TAU5 and 10 g-TAU10) in crystalline form (99% purity) in L. calcarifer juveniles, taking into account growth performance, general health indices and immune related-genes mRNA transcript abundance. RESULTS: The results confirmed that the supplementation of taurine enhances significantly all the growth parameters and a better flesh quality. While the blood biochemical and immunological factors didn't present any significant differences, the expression of growth-related genes showed that IGF-1 was almost 3 times higher in fishes fed diet Tau 5 and Tau 10 compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Finally, it can be concluded that at the maximum dose tested (10 g) the treatment was effective for Asian seabass. In addition, Tau inclusion in an FM-based diet can increase the productivity parameters along with raising the antioxidant status.

RESUMO

A 60-day feeding trial was performed to assess the dietary effect of Lactobacillus casei as a probiotic supplement on some serum biochemical parameters and liver histopathology in common carp fry after exposure to iron oxide nanoparticles (IoNPs). Six treatments were prepared as follows: control (no IoNP exposure and no dietary probiotic), P6: 106 CFU/g probiotic diet, P7: 107 CFU/g probiotic diet, NPs: 0.15 mg/l IoNPs, NPs + P6: 0.15 mg/l IoNPs with 106 CFU/g probiotic diet, and NPs + P7: 0.15 mg/l IoNPs with 107 CFU/gprobiotic diet. Based on the results, serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels were significantly increased in 0.15 mg/l IoNPs, P7, and NPs + P6 treatments compared to the control group. In addition, the examination of antioxidant enzymes showed a significant increase in the levels of cortisol and glutathione S-transferase as well as malondialdehyde level. IoNPs also caused significant histopathological changes in the fish liver during the experiment such as hyperemia in sinusoidal spaces, hepatocytes vacuolation and necrosis, pyknosis, and disruption of hepatic lobules and atrophy. Results revealed the protective effects of dietary L. casei to mitigate the adverse impacts of IoNPs on the physiological processes of common carp.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the probable cardiotoxicity following radionuclide therapy (RNT), specifically peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) with 177Lu-DOTATATE and radioligand therapy (RLT) with 177Lu-PSMA by evaluation of serum troponin I and cardiac profile change during a follow-up time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) referred for PRRT and RLT, respectively, were enrolled in this study. The cardiac profiles of the patients were evaluated by a cardiologist and a cardiac history was obtained from all patients. Also, troponin I was measured before and 48 hours after treatment. RESULTS: In this retrospective study for assessment of RLT associated cardiotoxicity, 24 patients were evaluated with a median age of 64 years (27-99 years) including 13 NET patients and 11 prostate cancer patients. Patients were followed up for 4 to 31 months which no cardiovascular problem was observed. In evaluation of troponin I, 39 RNT cycles were evaluated. In all patients, the value of troponin I was in normal range. In all patients, the median values of serum troponin I before and after treatment were 0.2 ±â€Š0.02 (range: 0.00-0.42) and 0.28 ±â€Š0.02 (range: 0.00-0.46) ng/ml, respectively (p > 0.05). In the prostate cancer patients, the median values of serum troponin I before and after treatment were 0.26 ± 0.04 (0.04-0.42) and 0.30 ±â€Š0.04 (0.00-0.41) ng/ml, respectively (p > 0.05). In the NET patients, the median values of serum troponin I before and after treatment were 0.18 ± 0.03 (0.00-0.42) and 0.17 ±â€Š0.03 (0.00-0.46) ng/ml, respectively (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: PRRT with 177Lu-DOTATATE and RLT with 177Lu-PSMA as emerging therapeutic modalities have no significant cardiotoxicity. However, further well-designed studies are recommended.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We aimed first to evaluate the early oxidative stress following radionuclide therapy (RNT) with 177Lu-PSMA and 177Lu-DOTATATE and second to evaluate the protective effect of vitamin C on oxidative stress. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumor (NET) patients referred to therapy with 177Lu-PSMA and 177Lu-DOTATATE, respectively, were enrolled in this study. The patients divided into the control group underwent routine RNT without any intervention and the intervention group was asked to take effervescent tablets (500 mg) of vitamin C for two days prior to the RNT (three tablets per day). To measure oxidative stress, blood samples were taken immediately before treatment and 48 h after treatment, and the serums were separated and frozen. To evaluate oxidative stress, the serum levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) and the activity of glutathione reductase were measured before and two days after treatment. RESULTS: In total, 61 RNT cycles were evaluated in 34 patients with age of 65 ± 2.83 (median ± SE) years (range of 27-99); this total included 20 (59%) prostate cancer patients [35 cycles (57.4%)] and 14 patients (41%) with NET [26 cycles (42.6%)]. Of the 61 evaluated cycles, 27 cycles were given in the control group and 34 cycles were given in the intervention group. The serum level of MDA was significantly increased after treatment compared to before treatment (P = 0.02) in the control group, while no significant change in the serum level of MDA was observed in the intervention group (P = 0.52). The serum level of GSH was insignificantly decreased after treatment compared to before treatment in the control group and slightly increased after treatment in the intervention group (P > 0.05). The serum level of glutathione reductase was insignificantly increased in all groups of patients after treatment (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: According to the results of this study, RNT with Lu-PSMA and Lu-DOTATATE may induce oxidative stress via the generation of free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Consumption of vitamin C prior to RNT may ameliorate this oxidative stress. These preliminary results have positive implications for clinical practice. Verification of these noteworthy results is needed and can be conducted with larger randomized controlled trials with longer time points.

RESUMO

This study investigated the effect of the dietary supplementation of bovine lactoferrin (LF) on growth performance, hematological and immunological parameters, antioxidant enzymes activity and disease resistance against Vibrio harveyi in yellowfin sea bream (Acanthopagrus latus) fingerling. The fish with initial body weight 10 ±â€¯0.3 g were randomly distributed at 10 fish per each 250 L fiberglass tank, and fed with four experimental diets (a control basal diet and three supplemented diets with 400, 800 and 1200 mg LF kg-1 diet) for 8 weeks. The obtained results showed that fish fed with LF supplemented diets had significantly higher final body weight as compared to control diet (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences between LF-treatments and the control group in white blood cell counts, red blood cell counts, hemoglobin and hematocrit. Total protein and complement activity (ACH50) in the serum of yellowfin sea bream were enhanced with increasing the dietary LF supplementation level (P < 0.05). The mucus lysozyme activity in fish fed on 800 and 1200 mg LF kg-1 was significantly higher than those fed on 400 mg LF kg-1 and control fish (P < 0.05). None of the antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase) was affected by LF supplementation (P > 0.05). Fish fed with dietary LF had a significantly higher survival rate than those fed with the control diet after challenge with Vibrio harveyi (P < 0.05). These results revealed that diet supplementation in A. latus especially with 1200 mg LF kg-1 improve fish growth performance and immune parameters, as well as survival rate against Vibrio harveyi.
