RESUMO

Human amniotic membrane is a readily available biological dressing material used to treat burns. It not only prevents oozing of plasma from burn wounds but also relieves pain and controls sepsis. We used human amniotic membrane to treat fifteen burn patients, and this material was effective. The application of this cost-free dressing material warrants further study as it can be made use of in areas where expensive and specialized equipment is not available.

RESUMO

The caecal apex in rats was ligated and animals given no treatment died at an early period. When kanamycin intraperitoneally (i.p.) or kanamycin i.p. plus heparin 20 units subcutaneously (s.c.) were given, 75 per cent of rats died within 10 days after development of peritonitis. In rats given kanamycin and heparin i.p., 25 per cent of rats died at much the same time. On the contrary, survival rates were 100 per cent in rats treated with kanamycin and heparin i.p. and heparin s.c. (total dose of heparin was same as given to other groups). In these rats, bacteria were not cultured from the fluid obtained in the peritoneal cavity. These results suggest that when heparin is given i.p. or s.c., it plays a significant role as an adjuvant in the treatment of peritonitis along with the usual chemotherapy.

RESUMO

The present study was performed to evaluate clinically the therapeutic efficacy of human anti-tetanic globulin in established cases of tetanus. The study was conducted in 100 patients in India with tetanus receiving treatment at P.B.M. Hospital, Bikaner. The human anti-tetanic globulin was given in addition to equine anti-tetanic serum, to all those patients who could afford to purchase the same, irrespective of age, sex or the severity of the disease, during the period of study. Except for the administration of human anti-tetanic globulin, the management of all the patients was identical. The study revealed that human anti-tetanic globulin is effective for patients with a short period of onset. Patients having prolonged spasms at frequent intervals were also the beneficiaries, to some extent. The hospitalization period of all the patients receiving human anti-tetanic globulin was shortened.

RESUMO

Parital obstruction of left renal vein leads to production of varicocele in a fairly short period, i.e.; even within a month. Collateral venous channels play an important role in the formation and degree of varicocele. Varicocele has got a depressive effect on the spermatogenesis on the side of varicocele as well as on opposite testes. Leydig cells and interstitial tissue flourish at the expense of gonadal elements. The factors affecting the spermatogenesis are different from those of other tissues of the testes.
