RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The present study was undertaken with the objective of ascertaining whether latent lip prints generated by persistent lipsticks and developed using lysochrome dyes have the potential of use in sex determination and personal identification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included a total of 100 subjects (50 males and 50 females) whose latent lip prints were obtained by applying the persistent lipstick Revlon ColorStay Overtime(®) manufactured by Revlon(®) consumer products corporation, NewYork, USA, and lifting the prints with cellophane sheets. The prints were then developed using lysochrome dyes, and all the samples were blinded and then graded based on defined patterns from the Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification. RESULTS: No two lip prints were found to be alike. Type I was found to be the most prevalent type. In the female population, Type I (61%) was most prevalent, followed by Type I' (28%), Type II (9%), Type III (2%), Type IV (1%), and Type V (1%); in the male population, Type I (33%) was most prevalent, followed by Type II (23%), Type III (18%), Type IV (14%), Type I' (10%), and Type V (3%). Two examiners were able to determine the correct sexes from the given sample sizes. Their interobserver agreement was assessed using the kappa coefficient for males (κ =0.870) and females (κ = 0.870). Their accuracy was assessed with a confidence interval (CI) of 91.48-99.38. CONCLUSION: Lysochrome dyes are very efficacious in developing latent lip prints. This preliminary study has conclusively proved that latent lip prints developed with lysochrome dyes hold the potential for use in sex determination and can be maintained in a digital database.

RESUMO

A careful examination of lips is often neglected by the members of the medical and dental professions; yet the lips reveal a heterogeneous group of lesions ranging from congenital abnormalities to benign and malignant neoplasms. Verruciform Xanthoma (VX) is an uncommon benign inflammatory mucocutaneous condition that occurs in the oral cavity which was first described by Shafer in 1971. It is often associated with pre-existing epithelial and/or inflammatory disorder and is characterized histopathologically by papillary epithelial hyperplasia and the presence of foamy macrophages in connective tissue papillae. We report a case with VX which presented as a well-defined, soft, painless swelling on the lower lip having different clinical features.

RESUMO

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic mucocutaneous disease with an unknown aetiology, affecting 0.5-2% of the population and with a predilection for females in fourth to fifth decade of life. Most oral lichen planus lesions are asymptomatic but the atrophic and erosive forms of OLP can cause symptoms ranging from spontaneous soreness to severe pain interfering with eating, speech and swallowing. Various drugs have been used for the treatment of OLP including corticosteroids and other immunomodulators. However, no therapy is considered as the single most effective and without side effects in the management of this enigmatic disease. This paper presents a case of successful management of extensive, symptomatic atrophic OLP with a novel treatment protocol: oral mini pulse therapy with betamethasone. In spite of using long-term systemic corticosteroids, side effects were minimal and clinically uneventful. Further controlled trials with this therapy may provide a definitive mode of treatment for severe OLP cases.

RESUMO

High-impact diseases, especially cancer, are challenging to diagnose without supplementing laboratory testing. Even with laboratory tools, definitive diagnosis often remains elusive. The oral fluid nanosensor test technology platform combines cutting-edge technologies--such as self-assembled monolayers, bionanotechnology, cyclic enzymatic amplification, and microfluidics--with several well-established techniques including microinjection molding, hybridization-based detection, and molecular purification. The intended use of the OFNASET is for the point-of-care multiplex detection of salivary biomarkers for oral cancer.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The identity of a person can be established by assessing one's age, and in order to be entitled to civil rights and social benefits, verification of the chronological age is required and thereby age estimation has gained an increasing significance in recent years. Tooth eruption is one of the criteria of developmental morphology that can be evaluated by either clinical examination or by evaluation of dental radiographs to determine the dental age. The present study was aimed to evaluate the reliability of the third molar eruption stage as a parameter for forensic age estimation in living subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The stage of wisdom tooth eruption in 77 male and 73 female Indian subjects aged between 12-26 years was determined by subjecting them to conventional orthopantomograms and was interpreted to assess the third molar eruption stages to evaluate the dental age. RESULTS: Predicted minimum age and mean age of the study sample were found to be significant predictors (P<0.001) of actual age. Minimum age was able to explain 58.3% of the variation in actual age and the mean age was able to explain 60.3% of variation in actual age. CONCLUSION: Third molar is fairly a reliable indicator to determine the age of alveolar, gingival, and complete emergence of third molar in the occlusal plane in adolescents and young adults. Minimum and most probable ages of examined subjects can also be evaluated using third molar eruption stage.

RESUMO

Cysticercosis of the oral cavity is a very rare soft tissue lesion and very few cases have been reported worldwide. Here we report a case of a cysticercous cellulosae within the masseter muscle which was diagnosed with the help of high resolution ultrasonography (USG) and ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and managed conservatively using oral antiparasitic medication. Cysticercosis is not commonly considered in the diagnosis of swellings of the head and neck and this is the reason why they are of utmost interest to the practitioner and have to be studied.
