RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a severe and life-threatening complication of venous thromboembolism. However, there is a lack of systematic studies on differences between female and male PE patients. This paper aimed to compare the sex-specific differences in clinical characteristics and laboratory indicators in psychotic patients with PE. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled psychiatric patients with PE from June 2018 to June 2022 at Shenzhen Kangning Hospital (Shenzhen Mental Health Center). Demographic characteristics, factors associated with PE, and laboratory indices were collected to assess sex-specific differences. RESULTS: Of the 168 patients, 87 (51.8%) were female and 81 (48.2%) were male, with a mean age of 58 years for females and 46 years for male patients. The male group had higher ratio of hyperprolactinemia, more patients using antipsychotic medications, higher D-dimer levels at PE onset, greater D-dimer difference, and a higher rate of D-dimer elevation than the female group (p < 0.05). Female patients were significantly older, exhibited a higher prevalence of diabetes, and had a greater number of patients taking antidepressants and hypnotics/sedatives than male patients (p < 0.05). Schizophrenia spectrum disorders were more prevalent in male patients, while female patients had a higher incidence of mood disorders (p < 0.05). Among patients aged < 45 years, the male group had higher D-dimer levels at PE onset and greater D-dimer difference (p < 0.05). Among all 112 patients aged ≥ 45 years, male patients were more likely than female patients to have respiratory tract infections, higher D-dimer levels at PE onset, greater D-dimer difference, and a higher rate of D-dimer elevation (p < 0.05). The multiple linear regression analysis indicated that hyperprolactinemia and the use of first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs) were associated with D-dimer levels at PE onset in male patients, while the time of PE onset and protective restraints were associated with D-dimer levels at PE onset in female patients (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: PE-associated clinical features differ between male and female patients. These differences may imply that the processes and mechanisms of PE onset are sex specific. Male patients are more likely to have respiratory tract infections and higher D-dimer levels at PE onset than female patients. The use of FGAs may be associated with increased D-dimer in male psychiatric patients, while protective restraints may be associated with increased D-dimer in female psychiatric patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Discharged psychiatric patients are at higher risk of suicide due to various risk factors in their lives compared to the general population. However, specific problems and needs of these patients after discharge remain unclear. This research constitutes a segment of a broader implementation study designed to formulate an interventional strategy targeting post-discharge suicide among Chinese psychiatric patients. The present study seeks to qualitatively investigate the problems and needs from the perspectives of patients, their lay healthcare supporters (LHSs), and mental health professionals (MPs), aiming to enhance the efficacy of the interventional strategy. METHODS: This study is part of a larger implementation study based on Shenzhen Kangning Hospital (SKH) in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. Under the community-based participatory research framework, we recruited discharged psychiatric patients, their LHSs, and MPs as a collaborative community team, and we conducted individual in-depth interviews for patients and LSHs and focus group interviews with MPs. We utilized a thematic analysis approach to identify sub-themes and themes from interviews through systematically coding and analyzing the data. RESULTS: A total of 45 participants were recruited for interviews, comprising 17 patients, 8 LHSs, and 20 MPs. We conducted 25 individual in-depth interviews and 3 focus group interviews. Through the interviews, we identified three themes of post-discharge problems: problems related to self, family-related problems, societal and community-related problems. We also identified four themes related to reducing post-discharge suicide: proactive self-management, multifunctional relatives, multifunctional MP group, and a warm society. The tangible support from LHSs and emotional support from MPs are strongly emphasized. Follow-up interventions were identified as the most significant way to addressing these unmet needs. Instrumental support from the community and a caring and non-discriminatory environment for individuals with mental disorders are essential for reducing suicide risk. CONCLUSIONS: Establishing an integrated mental health care service network that connects psychiatric patients, LHSs, and MPs cross community and societal sectors, with patient-centered follow-up care at its core, is a practical approach to better address patients' needs and reduce post-discharge suicide. RESUMO

The whole picture of psychotropics for bipolar depression (BPD) remains unclear. This review compares the differences in efficacy and safety profiles among common psychotropics for BPD. MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO were searched for proper studies. The changes in the depressive rating scale, remission/response rates, nervous system adverse events (NSAEs), gastrointestinal adverse events (GIAEs), metabolic parameters, and prolactin were compared between medication and placebo or among medications with the Cohen's d or number needed to treat/harm. The search provided 10 psychotropics for comparison. Atypical antipsychotics (AAPs) were superior to lithium and lamotrigine at alleviating acute depressive symptoms. Lithium was more likely to induce dry mouth and nausea. Cariprazine and aripiprazole seemed to be associated with an increased risk of akathisia and upper GIAEs. Lurasidone was associated with an increased risk of developing akathisia and hyperprolactinemia. Olanzapine, olanzapine-fluoxetine combination (OFC), and quetiapine were associated with an increased risk of NSAEs, metabolic risk, dry mouth, and constipation. Cariprazine, lurasidone, OFC, or quetiapine was optimal monotherapy for BPD. Further studies are needed to assess the efficacy and safety of lamotrigine for treating BPD. Adverse events varied widely across different drug types due to variations in psychopharmacological mechanisms, dosages, titration, and ethnicities.

RESUMO

Background: Lithium has been widely used to treat bipolar disorder (BD), although its adherence is rarely reported in China. This study aimed to explore the rate of lithium adherence and its associated factors in patients with BD, which has rarely been reported in China. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among patients in Shenzhen Mental Health Center (Shenzhen Kangning Hospital), who were aged 12 years or above, were diagnosed with BD based on the International Classification of Diseases, tenth edition (ICD-10), and had been on lithium for at least 1 month. We collected information on sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and on knowledge about and attitudes toward lithium. We also investigated patients' concerns while taking lithium and where they can and wish to obtain information on lithium. Results: Of the 244 enrolled patients and 221 patients aged 18 years or older, 52% and 50% disclosed low adherence to lithium, respectively. Factors associated with poor lithium adherence were a younger age (odds ratio (OR): 0.962, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.933-0.992), female sex (OR: 2.171, 95% CI: 1.146-4.112), and no hospitalization history (OR: 0.389, 95% CI: 0.217-0.689) for the full sample, and more years of education (OR: 4.086, 95% CI: 1.397-11.946) and fewer hospitalizations (OR: 0.615, 95% CI: 0.467-0.809) for patients aged 18 years or older. Less knowledge of periodic tests conducted during lithium treatment played a critical role in low lithium adherence (regression analysis of the full sample: OR: 0.642, 95% CI: 0.532-0.775, regression analysis of subgroups: OR: 0.609, 95% CI: 0.500-0.742). The treatment duration was a major concern among patients on lithium, and patients preferred obtaining lithium-associated information through health services and WeChat. Conclusion: The rate of lithium adherence was low in this study. Psychoeducation to increase lithium compliance should mainly focus on patients who are young and provide thorough background information on lithium. Health services should actively provide lithium-associated information. A greater need for medication information based on WeChat was observed, implying its potential role in adherence-related psychoeducation.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The postdischarge suicide risk among psychiatric patients is significantly higher than it is among patients with other diseases and general population. The brief contact interventions (BCIs) are recommended to decrease suicide risk in areas with limited mental health service resources like China. This study aims to develop a postdischarge suicide intervention strategy based on BCIs and evaluate its implementability under the implementation outcome framework. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study will invite psychiatric patients and family members, clinical and community mental health service providers as the community team to develop a postdischarge suicide intervention strategy. The study will recruit 312 patients with psychotic symptoms and 312 patients with major depressive disorder discharged from Shenzhen Kangning Hospital (SKH) in a Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomised Trial. Participants will be initially randomised into two intervention groups to receive BCIs monthly and weekly, and they will be rerandomised into three intervention groups to receive BCIs monthly, biweekly and weekly at 3 months after discharge according to the change of their suicide risk. Follow-ups are scheduled at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after discharge. With the intention-to-treat approach, generalised estimating equation and survival analysis will be applied. This study will also collect qualitative and quantitative information on implementation and service outcomes from the community team. ETHICS/DISSEMINATION: This study has received ethical approval from the Ethics Committee Review Board of SKH. All participants will provide written informed consent prior to enrolment. The findings of the study will be disseminated through peer-reviewed scientific journals, conference presentations. A project report will be submitted to the National Natural Science Foundation of China as the concluding report of this funded project, and to the mental health authorities in the Shenzhen to refine and apply evidence-based and pragmatic interventions into health systems for postdischarge suicide prevention. RESUMO

Objectives: To sequentially study the effectiveness of lithium and divalproex monotherapy and adjunctive therapy with quetiapine or lamotrigine in the acute and continuation treatment of bipolar I or II disorder at any phase of illness and at least mild symptom severity. Methods: From June 2011 to December 2016, patients with bipolar I or II disorder (using DSM-IV diagnostic criteria) and CGI-S (Clinical Global Impression-Severity) ⩾ 3 were randomized to receive lithium or divalproex monotherapy for 2 weeks. Patients who had CGI-S-depression ⩾ 3 for 2 weeks at any time after 2-week monotherapy were randomly assigned to receive quetiapine or lamotrigine, or remaining on monotherapy for a total of 26 weeks. Results: The rates of early termination due to lack of efficacy and side effects and changes in BISS (Bipolar Inventory of Symptoms Scale) and CGI-S total score were not significantly different between lithium and divalproex. The completion rate was significantly higher with adjunctive therapy than with monotherapy. BISS and CGI-S total scores, and their sub-scores were significantly reduced with adjunctive therapy compared to monotherapy. Adjunctive therapy significantly increased survival times compared to monotherapy (hazard ratio = 6.8), and the monotherapy group had a significantly increased risk for not reaching sustained recovery from depression (hazard ratio = 12.7). Patients who did not need the 2nd randomization and remained on monotherapy had a significantly reduced hazard for discontinuation (hazard ratio = 3.8). Conclusions: The efficacy of lithium and divalproex as monotherapy was modest. Adjunctive lamotrigine and quetiapine to either one was well-tolerated and equally effective in reducing bipolar symptomatology, but adjunctive therapy should be initiated as early as possible when depression symptoms are present.

RESUMO

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to estimate and rank the risk for the discontinuation due to adverse events (DAEs), 7% or more weight gain (WG), and somnolence during the acute and maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder with a mood stabilizer or an antipsychotic monotherapy. METHODS/PROCEDURES: The search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and clinicaltrials.gov from the inception to December 31, 2018, provided 32 studies in mania, 16 in bipolar depression, and 13 in maintenance. Data of DAEs, WG, and somnolence from each study were extracted. The risk for these variables of an active treatment relative to placebo was estimated with a number needed to harm (NNH) as a single study and pooled sample. FINDINGS/RESULTS: For DAEs, pooled NNH ranged from 19 with carbamazepine to -21 with quetiapine-XR in mania, 11 with quetiapine-IR 600 mg/d to -37 with olanzapine/fluoxetine combination in bipolar depression, and 5 with lithium to -8 with asenapine in maintenance. For WG, pooled NNH ranged from 9 with olanzapine to -78 with aripiprazole in mania, 5 with olanzapine to -112 with lithium in bipolar depression, and 4 with olanzapine to 126 with asenapine in maintenance. For somnolence, pooled NNH was from 5 with carbamazepine to 23 with cariprazine in mania, 3 with quetiapine-XR 300 mg/d to 79 with lurasidone in bipolar depression, and 11 with olanzapine to -49 with aripiprazole in maintenance. IMPLICATIONS/CONCLUSIONS: All medications studied in bipolar disorder were relatively well tolerated during different phases of treatment; however, the risk for short- and long-term WG and somnolence varied widely among included psychotropics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The approvals of psychotropics for bipolar disorder (BD) are mainly based on randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) from North America. It remains unknown whether approved psychotropics have similar efficacy, tolerability, and safety for Asians with BD. The aim of this systematic review was to compare those differences of psychotropics between Asians and North Americans with BD. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO were searched for RCTs studied in two regions. The effect size, remission/response rate, and risk for discontinuation due to adverse events (AEs), weight gain (WG), nervous systems and gastrointestinal AEs were assessed and compared between two regions with Cohen's d or number needed to treat/harm. RESULTS: Eleven studies of aripiprazole, olanzapine, risperidone, and quetiapine in BD were included. Similar efficacy and relatively benign tolerability of atypical antipsychotics (AAPs) between Asians and Americans with BD were observed in most studies. The risk for AAP-related WG was similar between two regions. Asians with mania or bipolar depression were more vulnerable to akathisia/tremor or constipation. Japanese and Chinese with bipolar depression were more sensitive to somnolence and dizziness, respectively. Americans were more likely to have dry mouth, nausea, and vomiting. LIMITATIONS: The number of included psychotropics and papers was small. CONCLUSIONS: Differences in AAP-related efficacy and tolerability were minimal between the two regions, but some AEs appeared to be different. Clinicians should pay attention to these differences to optimize treatment strategies in different races/ethnicities with BD.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: To compare common side effects of mood stabilizers (MSs) and antipsychotics in pediatric and adult bipolar disorder (BD). AREAS COVERED: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO was searched for randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) in the treatment of pediatric and adult BD. Twelve RCTs for pediatric patients and 30 for adult patients were included. The risk for the discontinuation due to adverse events, ≥7% weight gain, somnolence, akathisia, nausea and vomiting from a medication relative to placebo was estimated with absolute risk increase and the number needed to harm. The relative risk of these measures in pediatric and adult patients was compared. EXPERT OPINION: Overall, the relative risk for ≥7% weight gain, somnolence, nausea, or vomiting was higher, and akathisia was lower in pediatric patients than in adults. The magnitude of difference among MSs and antipsychotics and between pediatrics and adults varied widely. The risk for pediatric patients could be underestimated because in most pediatric studies, doses of studied medications were lower and flexibly dosed, and titration speeds were slower than in adult studies. Clinicians should pay attention to differences in study designs to understand the risk for common side effects when prescribing a medication for BD.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Brain atrophy coupled with impaired cognition may be a sign of dementia. However, growing evidence indicates that schizoaffective disorder (SAD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) play roles in the processes of frontotemporal atrophy and cognitive decline. Few cases of frontotemporal atrophy and impaired cognition have been reported in young adult patients with SAD and T2DM. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 34-year-old man was admitted for his 19th rehospitalization due to auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs), delusions of persecution, mania, and fluctuating blood sugar levels. After admission, a brain computed tomography (CT) scan revealed that the patient's frontotemporal atrophy, which was first found in 2014, had gradually degenerated over time. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) revealed cognitive impairments. Based on the clinical assessment, his cognition and social function impairments were determined to mainly result from SAD and T2DM because the clinical characteristics and course of the disease did not coincide with the features of progressive aggravation of dementia. DIAGNOSES: Diagnoses include the following: SAD-mania and T2DM. INTERVENTIONS: Paliperidone and sodium valproate coupled with quetiapine add-on treatment were prescribed for the patient. OUTCOMES: The therapeutic strategy had a limited effect on the patient. LESSONS: Early onset of SAD and T2DM, as well as irregular treatment, resulting in brain atrophy coupled with cognitive impairments, may be the main causes of the patient's treatment resistance and poor outcome. The risks and benefits of treatment strategies should be individually assessed. Further neuroimaging, pertinent biomarkers, and genetic tests along with long-term follow-up are needed for precise evaluation of the patient's condition.

RESUMO

Reported structural abnormalities of patients with bipolar disorder (BD) are inconsistent and the use of psychotropic medication is one of the sources of heterogeneity. A fairly small number of morphometric studies have involved comparison of BD on different mood stabilizers. Here in this study, we aimed to investigate the cortical thickness and subcortical volumes in euthymic BD patients on lithium and valproate and healthy controls (HC), and to elucidate the relationship between the use of medication and brain structure variations. We acquired structural magnetic resonance imaging data from 35 BD patients (19/valproate;16/lithium) and 30 HC subjects. Cortical thickness was compared in multiple locations across the continuous cortical surface, and subcortical volumes were compared on a structure-by-structure basis. Group analyses revealed widespread thinning of the prefrontal cortex in BD. Compared with BD on valproate, BD on lithium showed significant increased cortical thickness of the left rostral middle frontal cortex and right superior frontal cortex, while cortical thickness was not significantly different between BD on lithium and HC in the bilateral rostral middle frontal cortex. Moreover, no significant difference was observed in subcortical volume. Limitations of this study comprise the possible effect of other psychotropic drugs, small sample size and the cross-sectional design. Therefore, the results suggest medication-related neurobiological difference between BD patients on different mood stabilizers, but no casual role can be proposed. Our findings provided new evidence about the effects of psychotropic medication upon neuroanatomy in BD, and could help to explain the inconsistency of existing studies as well as contribute to the extraction of reliable neuroimaging biomarkers in BD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ritualistic behaviors are common in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), while catatonic stupor occasionally occurs in psychotic or mood disorders. Schizoaffective disorder is a specific mental disorder involving both psychotic and affective symptoms. The syndrome usually represents a specific diagnosis, as in the case of the 10th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) or the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). However, symptom-based diagnosis can result in misdiagnosis and hinder effective treatment. Few cases of ritualistic behaviors and catatonic stupor associated with schizoaffective disorder have been reported. Risperidone and modified electroconvulsive therapy (MECT) were effective in our case. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old man with schizoaffective disorder-depression was admitted to the hospital because of ritualistic behaviors, depression, and distrust. At the time of admission, prominent ritualistic behaviors and depression misled us to make the diagnosis of OCD. Sertraline add-on treatment exacerbated the psychotic symptoms, such as pressure of thoughts and delusion of control. In the presence of obvious psychotic symptoms and depression, schizoaffective disorder-depression was diagnosed according to ICD-10. Meanwhile, the patient unfortunately developed catatonic stupor and respiratory infection, which was identified by respiratory symptoms, blood tests, and a chest X-ray. To treat psychotic symptoms, catatonic stupor, and respiratory infection, risperidone, MECT, and ceftriaxone were administered. As a result, we successfully cured the patient with the abovementioned treatment strategies. Eventually, the patient was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder-depression with ritualistic behaviors and catatonia. Risperidone and MECT therapies were dramatically effective. CONCLUSION: Making a differential diagnosis of mental disorders is a key step in treating disease. Sertraline was not recommended for treating schizoaffective disorder-depression according to our case because it could exacerbate positive symptoms. Controversy remains about whether antipsychotics should be administered for catatonic stupor. However, more case studies will be needed. Risperidone with MECT was beneficial for the patient in our case.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the neural basis underlying major depressive disorder (MDD) is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of this mental disorder. Aberrant activation and functional connectivity of the default mode network (DMN) have been consistently found in patients with MDD. It is not known whether effective connectivity within the DMN is altered in MDD. OBJECTS: The primary object of this study is to investigate the effective connectivity within the DMN during resting state in MDD patients before and after eight weeks of antidepressant treatment. METHODS: We defined four regions of the DMN (medial frontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, left parietal cortex, and right parietal cortex) for each participant using a group independent component analysis. The coupling parameters reflecting the causal interactions among the DMN regions were estimated using spectral dynamic causal modeling (DCM). RESULTS: Twenty-seven MDD patients and 27 healthy controls were included in the statistical analysis. Our results showed declined influences from the left parietal cortex to other DMN regions in the pre-treatment patients as compared with healthy controls. After eight weeks of treatment, the influence from the right parietal cortex to the posterior cingulate cortex significantly decreased. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that the reduced excitatory causal influence of the left parietal cortex is the key alteration of the DMN in patients with MDD, and the disrupted causal influences that parietal cortex exerts on the posterior cingulate cortex is responsive to antidepressant treatment.

RESUMO

Information flow among auditory and language processing-related regions implicated in the pathophysiology of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) in schizophrenia (SZ) remains unclear. In this study, we used stochastic dynamic causal modeling (sDCM) to quantify connections among the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (inner speech monitoring), auditory cortex (auditory processing), hippocampus (memory retrieval), thalamus (information filtering), and Broca's area (language production) in 17 first-episode drug-naïve SZ patients with AVHs, 15 without AVHs, and 19 healthy controls using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Finally, we performed receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis and correlation analysis between image measures and symptoms. sDCM revealed an increased sensitivity of auditory cortex to its thalamic afferents and a decrease in hippocampal sensitivity to auditory inputs in SZ patients with AVHs. The area under the ROC curve showed the diagnostic value of these two connections to distinguish SZ patients with AVHs from those without AVHs. Furthermore, we found a positive correlation between the strength of the connectivity from Broca's area to the auditory cortex and the severity of AVHs. These findings demonstrate, for the first time, augmented AVH-specific excitatory afferents from the thalamus to the auditory cortex in SZ patients, resulting in auditory perception without external auditory stimuli. Our results provide insights into the neural mechanisms underlying AVHs in SZ. This thalamic-auditory cortical-hippocampal dysconnectivity may also serve as a diagnostic biomarker of AVHs in SZ and a therapeutic target based on direct in vivo evidence.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ziprasidone (ZIP) is often used with olanzapine (OLZ) in 'switch' and combination therapy but empirical evidence to support these strategies is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study was therefore designed to compare the efficacy and tolerability of switching from OLZ to ZIP, the combination of both medications, and OLZ and ZIP monotherapy, in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). METHODS: In this 12 week open-label, assessor-blinded randomized trial, 148 patients with SSD who had not used antipsychotics for at least 3 months were assigned to ZIP (n = 49) or OLZ monotherapy (n = 31); OLZ for 4 weeks then a switch to ZIP (OLZ/ZIP, n = 35); or combination therapy (OLZ + ZIP, n = 33). The severity of psychosis and abnormal involuntary movements was evaluated at baseline, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks using standard instruments. Baseline-to-endpoint changes in weight gain and metabolic measures were compared. RESULTS: The efficacy of both OLZ/ZIP and OLZ + ZIP was comparable OLZ monotherapy and better than ZIP monotherapy in reducing overall psychotic and negative symptoms at most 8 and 12 week measurement points. Changes in weight gain, glucose, and lipid measures did not differ between OLZ/ZIP and OLZ + ZIP, but were markedly higher following OLZ monotherapy. The OLZ + ZIP group had the lowest overall incidence of adverse events and extrapyramidal symptoms of all the treatment regimens. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that combining ZIP and OLZ at the outset of treatment is superior to switching from OLZ to ZIP in terms of improving psychotic symptoms and limiting movement side effects without increasing the risk of metabolic syndrome.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been employed for decades as a non-pharmacologic treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although a link has been suggested between PTSD and impaired sensorimotor gating (SG), studies assessing the effects of rTMS against PTSD or PTSD with impaired SG are scarce. AIM: To assess the benefit of rTMS in a rat model of PTSD. METHODS: Using a modified single prolonged stress (SPS&S) rat model of PTSD, behavioral parameters were acquired using open field test (OFT), elevated plus maze test (EPMT), and prepulse inhibition trial (PPI), with or without 7 days of high frequency (10Hz) rTMS treatment of SPS&S rats. RESULTS: Anxiety-like behavior, impaired SG and increased plasma level of cortisol were observed in SPS&S animals after stress for a prolonged time. Interestingly, rTMS administered immediately after stress prevented those impairment. CONCLUSION: Stress-induced anxiety-like behavior, increased plasma level of cortisol and impaired PPI occur after stress and high-frequency rTMS has the potential to ameliorate this behavior, suggesting that high frequency rTMS should be further evaluated for its use as a method for preventing PTSD.
