RESUMO

Electron microscope study of capillaries, arterioles, and venules of the cerebral cortex, strio--pallidar and nonneurosecretory complexes of hypothalamus of the man, cat, and rat revealed some details of the structure of the basal membrane and its interrelationship with adjacent astrocyte processes. Specific tight--junction type was present constantly among the adjacent membranes of glial cells. The system of the specializations and basal membrane seems to exert regulatory influence upon functioning of the blood--brain barrier.

RESUMO

Electron microscopic studies of interactions between the cerebral tissue, the basal membrane of intracerebral vessels, and the limiting superficial membrane have been carried out. It has been demonstrated that highly specialized contacts of the compact and gap type are maintained constantly between the membranes of the neighboring astrocyte spicules around the vessels and under the limiting membrane. Such contacts are also encountered in the intercellular space in the whole mass of the brain. It is suggested that this specialized system and the basal membrane are of importance for regulating the functioning of the hematoencephalic barrier. It is noted that there exists a united structured system at the border between the cerebral tissue, cerebrospinal fluid, and blood, the participates in the pathogenetic and homeostatic mechanisms.

RESUMO

The connections of motor, auditory, vestibular, associative, and visual areas of the cat cerebral cortex with caudate nucleus (CN), their topographical organization and mutual overlapping of their projection areas within CN, were studied. The cortical areas were found to be connected with CN simultaneously with fibers of different diameters, their relation as well as topography of terminals being different within morphologically heterogenous CN. Studies of terminal degeneration in CN after cortical ablations revealed a greater number of cortico-caudate pathways which included the synapses different in their localization, bouton sizes and the degeneration rate. Specifics of the organization of direct connections between functionally different cortical areas with CN in respect to physiological data, are discussed.

RESUMO

Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) was induced in guinea pigs by sensitization of myelinomas of homologous or heterologous (rabbit) brain in the complete Freund's adjuvant. Antilymphocytic serum (ALS) obtained by immunization of rabbits with the lymphocytes of the lymph nodes of guinea pigs was injected subcutaneously for 3--6 days at the early periods before or after the sensitization. ALS produced a marked inhibitory action on the development of the neurological signs of EAE and of histological changes in the form of demyelinization and perivascular cell infiltration in the lumbo-sacral and cervical portions of the spinal cord. Administration of ALS beginning from the 3rd--5th day before the sensitization or from the date of the EAE induction proved to be the most effective. When the injections were started from the 7th or the 12th day after the sensitization an increase in the incidence of the disease occurred in the grooups. A fall of morbidity correlated with a reduction of percentage of positive skin tests in response to the intradermal injection of a homologous myelin. No reduction in the production of the complement-fixing, antibodies to the heterologous antigen was seen in the animals given ALS. This pointed to the participation of cell factors in the development of the pathological process.
