RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to examine the ways in which mock jurors justified their verdict decisions using moral foundations language. Participants read a trial transcript describing a second-degree murder charge featuring an automatism plea (which negates the physical volition of a crime). They then provided a two-to-three sentence rationale for their verdict choice, which we coded for the contextually-valid presence of words from the Moral Foundations (MF) Dictionary. Mock jurors were most likely to use harm-related language in justifying murder votes. A qualitative description also revealed differences in the content of the justifications.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Our aim was to assess and address the challenges radiology residents face when managing breast imaging emergencies on call and to determine if targeted educational interventions improved resident confidence and knowledge. METHODS: We created surveys to determine resident comfort level with and knowledge of appropriate management of breast imaging emergencies. We also created structured educational interventions to improve resident confidence and knowledge. The effectiveness of these interventions was assessed with pre- and post-intervention surveys given to the 43 residents at our institution. RESULTS: Thirty-six of the 43 residents at our institution completed both surveys. The results showed that 33 of 36 residents (91.7%) felt an increase in their comfort level after utilizing one or both of the interventions. There was also significant improvement in resident knowledge; the average resident score on the knowledge questions improved from 40 to 68% (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Managing breast imaging emergencies on call can be challenging and stressful for residents. Educational interventions such as our targeted teaching tools can significantly improve resident confidence and knowledge. Presenting dedicated teaching materials directed at a previously identified knowledge deficit and source of stress significantly improved resident knowledge base and confidence in managing breast imaging emergencies on call.

RESUMO

This paper investigates young women's alcohol consumption in the United Kingdom within a widespread culture of intoxication in relation to recent debates about postfeminism and contemporary femininity. Young women are faced with an "impossible dilemma," arising from the contradiction between a hedonistic discourse of alcohol consumption and postfeminist discourse around attaining and maintaining the "right" form of hypersexual heterosexual femininity. Drawing on a recent interview study with 24 young white working-class and middle-class women in the South-West of England, we explore how young women inhabit the dilemmas of contemporary femininity in youth drinking cultures, striving to achieve the "right" form of hypersexual femininity and an "optimum" level of drunkenness.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The limited efficacy of treatments for eating disorders has been well documented. Yet few studies have explored patients' views about recovery or how culturally dominant ideas might be implicated in recovery or failure to recover. AIMS: This paper explores how 'self', 'eating disorders' and 'recovery' are discursively constructed in patients' accounts of their treatment experiences. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 39 participants, hospitalised, either in Britain or Australia, for anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia. Participants were asked to discuss past and present treatment experiences and their views on their recovery and future. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed qualitatively using a discourse analytic methodology. RESULTS: Participants frequently construed their eating disorder in very negative ways whilst recovery was often positively construed as, for example, entailing happiness, freedom from fear and the ability to live a fuller life. However, many, though not all, participants also talked about recovery as hard or impossible to imagine for themselves. DISCUSSION: The paper explores how both the imagining and the seeming inability to imagine their own recovery can be understood in relation to participants' self-constructions and to culturally dominant notions of personhood and eating disorders. The implications of the analysis for therapeutic interventions are discussed.
