RESUMO

Biomarkers for pulmonary manifestations in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are missing. Plasma samples of nine SLE patients with known pulmonary involvement (SLEpulm) and nine SLE patients without pulmonary involvement (SLE) were tested by multiplex microarray analysis for various cyto- and chemokines. Significantly decreased lung function paramters for forced vital capacity (FVC), total lung capacity (TLC), diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) and diffusion of CO corrected on lung volume (KLCO) were observed in SLEpulm as compared to SLE patients. CC chemokine ligand 21 (CCL21) and interferon gamma-induced protein 10 (IP-10) levels were significantly higher in SLEpulm, than in patients without pulmonary manifestations. CCL21 correlated negatively with DLCO ( r = -0.73; p < 0.01) and KLCO ( r = -0.62; p < 0.01), while IP-10 with FVC and forced expiratory volume one second. Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) analysis confirmed high sensitivity and specificity for the separation of SLE patients with and without pulmonary involvement for the chemokines CCL21 (Area Under Curve (AUC): 0.85; sensitivity%: 88.90; specificity%: 75.00; p < 0.01) and IP-10 (AUC: 0.82; sensitivity%: 66.67, specificity%: 100; p < 0.01). Pleuropulmonary manifestations in SLE patients associated with lung functional and DLCO/KLCO changes and were associated with significant increase in CCL21 and IP-10. These chemokines might serve as potential biomarkers of lung involvement in SLE patients.

RESUMO

As a novel approach to characterize the phenolic pollutants of Lake Balaton (Central Europe, western Hungary), 26 endocrine disrupting phenols (chlorophenols, nitrophenols, alkylphenols, triclosan, bisphenol-A) were quantified in dissolved and suspended particulate matter (SPM) phases, alike. Sample collection was performed in the western and eastern basins, at 20 sites in April and October 2014. Solid-phase and ultrasound-assisted extractions to withdraw target phenols from dissolved and suspended phases were employed. Compounds were derivatized with hexamethyldisilazane and trifluoroacetic acid for their quantification as trimethylsilyl derivatives by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. In Lake Balaton's dissolved phase, 2-chlorophenol (103-164 ng/L), 4-chlorophenol (407-888 ng/L), 2,4-dichlorophenol (20.2-72.0 ng/L), 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (10.4-38.1 ng/L), 2-nitrophenol (31.0-66.5 ng/L), 4-nitrophenol (31.5-94.1 ng/L), and bisphenol-A (20.6-112 ng/L), while in its SPM, 4-chlorophenol (

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The criteria determining the choice of the technique used to repair traumatic orbital floor defects include the quality of the expected result, morbidity, ease of use and plasticity of the method, and its cost and availability. Among the different methods proposed, lactic acid polymer implants are particularly interesting. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighteen patients with an isolated blow-out fracture of the orbital floor were treated with a lactic acid polymer implant between 1995 and 1996. Ten of these patients were reviewed at 24 to 43 months follow-up. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 35 years (20-52 years). No residual diplopia was observed. None of the patients had an anomalous orbital volume or ocular dystopia. None of the implants migrated. One patient experienced episodes of palpebral inflammation that resolved spontaneously. The ten patients reviewed were satisfied with the outcome. DISCUSSION: The properties of lactic acid polymer implants facilitate their use, avoid morbidity and provide a quality result. This is the procedure of choice for repairing tissue loss of the orbital floor. It has several advantages over alternative methods (the implants are rigid, thin, resorbable and well tolerated) without having their defects (thickness, fragility, roughness, predetermined form, rapid alteration, specific instrumentation, iatrogenic disorders). In addition, lactic acid polymer plates can be remodeled when heated, allowing a precise adaptation of the implant to the orbital structures. Finally, the cost, compared with the advantages, is not a barrier for routine use.

RESUMO

A new case of this rarely described pathology is reported. It concerns a benign infiltrating lipomatosis, strictly located to the face. However, dento-musculo-squelettal structures are constantly involved, usually located to a hemiface. A young female patient has been followed up from her birth. Surgical procedures are reported. Diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties of this rare clinicopathologic entity are discussed.
