RESUMO

Sclerosing polycystic adenoma (SPA) is a rare neoplastic salivary gland lesion with only about 100 cases reported worldwide so far. The lesion is confused with several malignant and other benign tumors such as apocrine intraductal carcinoma (IC), salivary duct carcinoma (SDC), chronic sclerosing sialadenitis, polycystic dysgenetic disease (PDD), pleomorphic adenoma (PA), acinic cell carcinoma (ACC), and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC). We present a case of SPA for a 23-year-old male patient presenting with a slowly growing parotid mass. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) followed by total excision of the tumor was performed and the picture was consistent with SPA. We discuss the findings of the case and briefly review the literature on SPA.

OBJECTIVE: evaluating the role of FOXO3 mRNA and mi RNA 182-5P expression levels in BC patients. METHOD: 25 Samples of breast cancer and paired samples of non-cancerous tissues from the same resected breast were obtained from 25 female patients suffering from breast cancer and examined and analyzed by real time PCR to detect the expression levels of FOXO3 mRNA and mi RNA 182-5P. Patients' data were collected from patients medical records. RESULTS: Foxo3 m RNA expression was down regulated in BC tissues (1.37± 1.96) as compared to control group (23.62 ± 54.39) and decreased FOXO3 expression was associated with larger tumor size (p= 0.046), late histopathological grading (p= 0.002), late TNM staging (<0.001) and increased miR-182 expression (p= 0.025). We found that expression level of miR-182 was significantly higher among breast cancer group (1.10±1.15) as compared to the control group (0.58±0.96 ) with p value = 0.017. We noted a significant increased expression associated with larger tumor size (p= 0.002), late histopathological grading (p= 0.008), late TNM staging (p= 0.002) and decreased FOXO3 expression (p= 0.025). A significant negative correlation between miR-182 and FOXO3 mRNA fold expression with r = - 0.447, and a p value of 0.025, this could be attributed to miRNA targeting FOXO gene. COCLUSION: Down regulation of FOXO3 and up regulation of miR-182 expression was associated with advanced breast cancer. The negative correlation between miR-182 and FOXO3 mRNA could be attributed to miRNA targeting FOXO gene.

A series of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was successfully synthesized for producing of CMC-g-GMA copolymer. Water-soluble CMC-g-GMA copolymer was photo-crosslinked while Irgacure-2959 was used as a UV-photo-initiator at 365 nm. On the other hand, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from sugarcane were graft-copolymerized in an aqueous solution utilizing cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN) as an initiator in a redox-initiated free-radical approach. CNCs were grafted with GMA to enhance their physicochemical and biological characteristics. Factors affecting hydrogel formation, e.g. CMC-g-GMA copolymer concentration, irradiation time and incorporation of different concentration of CNCs-g-GMA nano-filler, were discussed in dependance on the swelling degree and gel fraction of the produced hydrogels. Notably, the addition of CNCs-g-GMA nanofillers increased progressively thermal stability of the prepared hydrogel. CMC-g-GMA filled with CNCs-g-GMA composite hydrogel showed antimicrobial activity against multidrug resistance pathogens. Thus, CMC-g-GMA filled with CNCs-g-GMA composite hydrogel could be endorsed as compatible biomaterials for versatile biomedical applications.

BACKGROUND: Energy drinks are one of the most popular packaged beverage products consumed within the United States (US). Energy drinks are considered a functional beverage, a category that also includes sports drinks and nutraceutical beverages. PURPOSE: The focus of the current study was to examine the nutrition fact panels of the top selling commercially available energy drink and energy shot products within the US to characterize common ingredient profiles to help establish a standard definition and ingredient profile of energy drinks and energy shots for consumers, health care practitioners, and researchers. METHODS: The top 75 commercially available energy drinks and shots were identified and compiled from multiple commercial retail websites as of September 2021. For the purpose of this study, an energy drink must have met the following criteria: (A) marketed as an energy drink; (B) purported to improve energy, focus, or alertness; (C) not sold as a dietary supplement (no supplement fact panels); (D) manufactured as a pre-packaged and ready-to-drink beverage; and (E) contains at least three of (1) caffeine, (2) B-vitamins, (3) sugar, (4) taurine, (5) creatine, (6) quercetin, (7) guarana, (8) ginseng, (9) coenzyme Q10, or (10) branched chain amino acids. Energy shots must have met similar criteria to be included: (A) marketed as an energy shot; (B) purported to improve energy, focus, or alertness; (C) sold as a dietary supplement; (D) manufactured as a pre-packaged beverage with a small volume (<3.5 mL); and (E) contains at least three of the ingredients stated above. RESULTS: Twenty energy shots and fifty-five energy drinks were included in this analysis. The number of ingredients per product (mean ± SD) was 18.2 ± 5.7, with 15 products containing proprietary blends with undisclosed ingredient amounts. The relative prevalence and average amounts of the top ingredients were as follows: caffeine (100%; 174.4 ± 81.1 mg), vitamin B6 (72%; 366.9 ± 648.1 percent daily value (%DV)), vitamin B3 (67%; 121.44 ± 69.9% DV), vitamin B12 (67%; 5244.5 ± 10,474.6% DV), vitamin B5 (37.3%; 113.6 ± 76.6% DV), and taurine (37.3%; amounts undisclosed). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest a high prevalence of caffeine and B-vitamins in these energy products, with many of the formulations containing well above the recommended daily value of B-vitamins.
