RESUMO
A case of infection with Dirofilaria immitis in a cat is reported here with clinical signs of apathy, anorexia, dyspnea, polypnea, slight dehydration and pale mucus membranes. The radiographic examination showed cardiomegaly, lobar arteries dilation of the cranial lobes and tortuosity, enlargement of the caudal lobar arteries. In the right lobe of the lung parenchyma, interstitial pulmonary opacification tending to alveolar opacification was seen. The clinical signs, the movements, and the morphology of the microfilariae in the direct examination of fresh blood, peripheral blood smear and Knott's modified test supported the diagnosis. We alert to the need for clinicians to consider feline heartworm diseases as a differential diagnosis in endemic areas when cats show respiratory signs.

This work was developed to evaluate the impact of the addition of proteases on the performance characteristics, egg quality, relative weight of digestive organs, and intestinal morphometry of laying hens. 390 Hy Line W36® hens were allocated into five treatments and six replicates with 13 animals. The treatments were: 1) Control (standard formulation), 2) Negative control A - NCA (nutritional reduction according to protease A matrix), 3) Negative control B - NCB (nutritional reduction according to protease B matrix), 4) NCA+protease A (0.250 g/kg of feed) and 5) NCB+protease B (0.125 g/kg of feed). Hens fed the NCA, NCB, and NCA+protease A diets showed reductions in feed intake and egg mass. The addition of protease B provided better results for egg production in both percentage and per dozen as compared to the group fed with the NCA+protease A diets. The hens subjected to diets NCA and NCB showed eggs with a reduced eggshell and thickness percentage. However, supplementation with proteases A and B improved these parameters to values similar to the controls. There was no significant effect of the treatments on the relative weight of the liver, proventricle, gizzard, pancreas, and small intestine. However, the addition of protease A resulted in a decreased value for the relative weight of the large intestine. The jejunum and ileum crypt depths were, respectively, smaller in hens fed the control diet in relation to the NCB diet and the NCA and NCB diets. As it can be concluded, Protease B supplementation provided the best performance results.(AU)

The pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 brought to society a health crisis that drastically affected the global economy and brought more restrictive measures to food supply establishments, which are classified as essential activities. However, they had to adapt to the new hygienic-sanitary operating protocol, established through regulations published by the Federal and State Governments in order to reduce the chances of viral spread. The objective of the study was to evaluate the hygienic and sanitary conditions of fish sold in fish markets in the city of Nova Iguaçu/RJ, through questionnaires on the application of good marketing and handling practices, during the lockdown related to the coronavirus pandemic. An observational "checklist" type questionnaire was used to assess the hygienic and sanitary conditions of fish in 13 fish markets located in 7 districts of Nova Iguaçu/RJ. It was observed that in 92% of the establishments visited had materials and equipment in disuse in the outdoor area, had failures in conservation, sanitation and adequate maintenance, without vector and pest control, without a suitable container for waste collection, lack of personal cleanliness and did not present the amount of flaky ice adequate to coat the fish. Thus, it was possible to check that the establishments did not follow the basic rules of hygiene and safety of the fish to reduce the dissemination of the coronavirus, confirming that the commercialization of fish in the fish markets visited in the municipality of Nova Iguaçu/RJ does not meet the recommended standards of hygiene and packaging of the products sold. Therefore, the relevance of this study is to provide fishmongers in the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, practical and viable guidelines for adapting to the legislation, with the main objective of updating and favoring the reinforcement of Good Handling Practices through an illustrative folder distributed later on visits to establishments.(AU)

PURPOSE: To evaluate the contribution of the loop memory recorder in improving the diagnosis of symptoms related to cardiac arrhythmias. METHODS: The study population was 64 patients whose Holter monitorization was inconclusive as to the diagnosis of symptoms related to cardiac arrhythmias. Each wore a patient-activated ambulatory electrocardiogram device for 15 days. The ECG recording during the occurrence of symptoms were sent to the ECG receiving center by phone. RESULTS: Two patients did not conclude the study. The majority of the patients (85.5%) experienced symptoms in the fifteen days of monitorization, and in 62.2% of these patients electrocardiographic events were observed. The main symptoms experienced by these patients were: palpitation (67.7%), dizziness (32.3%), and syncope (29%). Other symptoms like breast pain, fatigue, indisposition and dyspnea were also noted in 30.6% of the patients. The main electrocardiographic disturbances observed were: sinus tachycardia (45.5%), isolated premature beats (30.3%), supraventricular tachycardia (21.2%), ventricular tachycardia (3%) and third degree AV block (3%). We also observed that the first symptomatic recording occurred mainly in the initial days of monitorization (69.4%) in the first 5 days). The percentage of diagnoses was 35.5% in patients whose Holter monitoring had been inconclusive. CONCLUSION: The cardiac loop ECG recorder therefore achieved an important incremental diagnostic yield.

Electrocardiographic rhythm disturbance evaluation by Holter monitoring is increasingly becoming a useful methodologic tool for risk stratification as well as for therapeutic assessment in patients with Chagas' disease. Furthermore, late potential analyses, now being directly obtained from Holter recording has promising perspectives in enhancing identification of patients with high risk profiles for development of malignant ventricular arrhythmias. In addition, recently incorporated to Holter studies, heart rate variability analysis will certainly contribute to a better understanding of the characteristic autonomic nervous system disarray that commonly affects chagasic patients.
