RESUMO

The discovery of a small tin canister in London during archaeological excavations of a Roman temple precinct, dated to the middle of the second century AD, is a landmark in the study of this class of artefact. Such discoveries from the Roman world are rare and this is the only one to be found so far with its lid and contents--a whitish medicinal or cosmetic cream--providing a unique opportunity for us to study the ancient formulation.

The abundance of large, previously unknown larvacean feeding structures in the deep ocean is a striking contrast to the rarity of such forms taken in net hauls. In some areas, abandoned houses and their disintegrated parts provide a substrate for other organisms and contribute to organic aggregates.

RESUMO

In an attempt to formulate indications for mediastinoscopy, the histologic tumor type and the radiographic manifestations of the tumor were correlated with the occurrence of mediastinal node metastases in 121 patients who had potentially resectable bronchogenic carcinoma. Our results demonstrated that mediastinal metastases occur commonly in patients with central lesions irrespective of cell type, but that the histologic tumor type has a definite influence on the frequency of mediastinal involvement in patients with parenchymal masses or peripheral lesions. Our results also demonstrated that the absence of radiographic evidence of mediastinal involvement cannot be given strong consideration when selecting patients for mediastinoscopy, because almost 50 per cent of patients with mediastinal involvement did not have mediastinal widening on the chest roentgenogram. Our results, in conjunction with currently accepted principles governing the management of patients with bronchogenic carcinoma, have allowed us to propose a logical approach for the use of mediastinoscopy in the prethoracotomy evaluation of patients with potentially resectable lung cancer.

RESUMO

Pulses in the 0.01 to 40 microvolt range, probably generated by white fiber muscle action potentials, were remotely received through dipole antennae from five fishes and one amphibian in aquarium tests. In natural environments, however, no biologically generated signals have been detected. Received instead were a multitude of similar signals originating from unknown sources. The dominant types of these "atmospheric" signals and their reception rates change diurnally and can easily be confused with the fish-generated signals.

RESUMO

The distribution of a myctophid fish and physonect siphonophores observed during dives in the Soucoupe off Baja California closely correlates with scattering layers recorded simultaneously with a 12-kcy/sec echo sounder. These organisms were observed while they were migrating vertically, and at their night and daytime levels. They are capable of rapid, extensive changes in depth.
