RESUMO

Over the past several decades, the fixation of "new" nitrogen to the biosphere has doubled. For the early 21st century, the most significant rate increases in atmospheric nitrogen deposition are predicted for developing nations. Wet nitrogen deposition was assessed on the remote island of Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas in a dry and wet season from January to July 2000. Episodic deposition of nitrate (approximately 1-137 microM) and ammonia (approximately 2-122 microM) represented a mean deposition rate of approximately 0.2 mgDIN m(-2) yr(-1). Wet deposition of nitrogen to the climatologically-linked east coast of Florida is approximately 4 times greater than the estimated annual wet nitrogen deposition value at Green Turtle Cay, suggesting the continental US as a principal airshed for this loading source. Short-term bioassays of macroalgal productivity with a 5% rainfall solution caused depressed net productivity and increased dark respiration, well known "transient metabolic" responses by nutrient-limited tropical macroalgae. Wet deposition of inorganic nitrogen from episodic rainfall events may provide up to 20% of the "new" nitrogen necessary to meet growth demands of macroalgae on coral reefs near Green Turtle Cay.

RESUMO

Traditional geometry optimization methods require the gradient of the potential surface, together with a Hessian which is often approximated. Approximation of the Hessian causes difficulties for large, floppy molecules, increasing the number of steps required to reach the minimum. In this article, the costly evaluation of the exact Hessian is avoided by expanding the density functional to second order in both the nuclear and electronic variables, and then searching for the minimum of the quadratic functional. The quadratic search involves the simultaneous determination of both the geometry step and the associated change in the electron density matrix. Trial calculations on Taxol indicate that the cost of the quadratic search is comparable to the cost of the density functional energy plus gradient. While this procedure circumvents the bottleneck coupled-perturbed step in the evaluation of the full Hessian, the second derivatives of the electron-repulsion integrals are still required for atomic-orbital-based calculations, and they are presently more expensive than the energy plus gradient. Hence, we anticipate that the quadratic optimizer will initially find application in fields in which existing optimizers breakdown or are inefficient, particularly biochemistry and solvation chemistry.

RESUMO

Merkel cell carcinoma is a neuroendocrine tumor of the skin, originating from neuroendocrine cells. A case report of Merkel cell carcinoma, discovered in a 77-Year-old woman, was diagnosed and confirmed on a biopsy. Diagnostic and therapeutic orientations of this unusual but malignant tumor are described.

RESUMO

The ocular fundus is the only examination which allows a simple and non invasive visualisation of the terminal vascular system. Feature analysis of fundus examination supposes a similar vascular state in the other organs and permits direct diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic choices. This article will emphasize the value of an ophthalmoscopy examination in patients with arterial hypertension.
