Effect of immunocastration with Bopriva on carcass characteristics and meat quality of feedlot Holstein bulls.

To evaluate the effect of immunocastration on carcass and meat characteristics, Holstein bulls aged between 7 and 8months with a live weight of 232±1.19kg were given two separate treatments, placebo (intact bulls) versus Bopriva, and then slaughtered after approximately 239days of fattening. While the testosterone levels in intact bulls remained at 0.42ng/ml throughout the study, by day 181, differences (P<0.05) were observed in immunized bulls, with values of 0.21ng/ml. The carcasses of animals treated with Bopriva recorded both a higher hot carcass weight (HCW) and a cold carcass weight (CCW), as well as higher dorsal fat density, marbling and KPH (P<0.05); however, no differences (P>0.05) were observed in the Longissimus lumborum area. No significant differences (P>0.05) were recorded between the treatments for pH, L*, a*, b* C* and H*. The carcasses of the animals treated with Bopriva were heavier, with higher dorsal fat density and marbling score.

Evaluación de la reproducción del plano oclusal al montar en dos sistemas de arco facial y articulador semiajustable: comparación de los articuladores Whip-Mix y Denar Mark II / Evaluation of the accuracy of the occlusal plane using two systems of facial bow and articulator: Whip-Mix and Denar Mark II

Fundamento: El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar radiográficamente la precisión con la que dos sistemas de arco facial y articulador semiajustable, Whip-MixTM y Denar Mark IITM, reproducen la posición del maxilar con respecto al plano de referencia horizontal de Frankfort. Pacientes y método: Se analizan las relaciones de los planos horizontal de Frankfort y oclusal en cefalografías y en radiografías laterales de los modelos de la arcada superior montados en los articuladores en una muestra de 28 sujetos adultos jóvenes con denticiones completas y sanas. Para la determinación de las diferencias estadísticas entre las mediciones de cada articulador los datos fueron sujetos a una prueba t de Student para datos pareados. Resultados: Los resultados mostraron diferencias significativas (P<.01) entre las medidas angulares de los aparatos con respecto a las registradas por las cefalografías. Conclusión: la transferencia de modelos está sujeta a errores al montar en los sistemas Whip-Mix y Denar estudiados. Se sugiere realizar estudios para observar las implicaciones clínicas de la magnitud de los errores (AU)

Basis: The purpose of this study was to determine, by radiographic evaluation, the accuracy of two semi-adjustable articulators, Whip- Mix (Whip-Mix Corp. Louisville, Kentucky, USA) and Denar Mark II (Denar Corp. Anaheim, California, USA), to reproduce maxillary position with respect to Frankfort’s horizontal plane. Patients and method: Twenty-eight young healthy adults with full dentition were selected. A cephalogram and casts of the maxillary arch were obtained, as well as the. The casts were mounted on its articulator following standard procedures. The Frankfort plane and occlusal plane relationships are studied through the use of cephalometry and lateral x-rays of the mounted upper models on the articulators with a face bow transfer. Data was tabulated and a t Student test for paired data was applied to determine if there were significant differences between the measured angles in both articulators. Results: Significant differences in groups were seen (P<.01) in the angular measurements of the devices as compared to the cephalometry. Conclusion: Model transfer and mounting to the articulators is subject to errors. Further studies should be undertaken to evaluate if these errors have clinical implications (AU)
