RESUMO

In this study we fabricate gold nanocomposites and model their optical properties. The nanocomposites are either homogeneous films or gratings containing gold nanoparticles embedded in a polymer matrix. The samples are fabricated using a recently developed technique making use of laser interferometry. The gratings present original plasmon-enhanced diffraction properties. In this work, we develop a new approach to model the optical properties of our composites. We combine the extended Maxwell-Garnett model of effective media with the Rigorous Coupled Wave Analysis (RCWA) method and compute both the absorption spectra and the diffraction efficiency spectra of the gratings. We show that such a semi-analytical approach allows us to reproduce the original plasmonic features of the composites and can provide us with details about their inner structure. Such an approach, considering reasonably high particle concentrations, could be a simple and efficient tool to study complex micro-structured system based on plasmonic components, such as metamaterials.

RESUMO

An improvement in the method of production of embedding ab initio model potentials (AIMP) for embedded cluster calculations in ionic solids is proposed and applied to the oxides CeAlO(3), CeO(2), and UO(2). The improvement affects the calculation of one of the AIMP components, the Pauli repulsion operator, which prevents the cluster electrons from collapsing onto the occupied orbitals of the host in embedded cluster calculations and, so, their over occupancy. The linear constants involved in such operator are proposed to be obtained in embedded cluster calculations in the perfect host, with the requirement that local structures calculated with working embedded clusters of relatively small size agree with those calculated with reference embedded clusters of much larger size.

RESUMO

The mechanisms of polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone (CL) initiated by either the rare-earth hydride [Cp2Eu(H)] or the borohydrides [Cp2Eu(BH4)] or [(N2NN')Eu(BH4)] were studied at the DFT level (Cp=eta5-C5H5; N2NN'=(2-C5H4N)CH2(CH2CH2NMe)2). For all compounds the reaction proceeds in two steps: a hydride transfer from the rare earth initiator to the carbonyl carbon of the lactone, followed by ring-opening of the monomer. In the last step a difference is observed between the hydride and borohydride complexes, because for the latter the ring-opening is induced by an additional B-H bond cleavage leading to a terminal--CH2OBH2 group. This corresponds to the reduction by BH3 of the carbonyl group of CL. Upon reaction of [Cp2Eu(H)] with CL, the alkoxy-aldehyde complex produced, [Cp2Eu(O(CH2)5C(O)H)], is the first-formed initiating species. In contrast, for the reaction of CL with the borohydride complexes [(Lx)Eu(BH4)] (Lx=Cp2 or N2NN'), an aliphatic alkoxide with a terminal--CH2OBH2 group, [(Lx)Eu(O(CH2)6OBH2)] is formed and subsequently propagates the polymerization. The present DFT investigations are fully compatible with previously reported mechanistic studies of experimental systems.

RESUMO

A DFT study of the isostructural compounds [UO2L5](n-) with n=3-5 and linear [Cp2UL5](m-) with m=1-3 has been carried out for two different anionic ligands. Structurally stable structures are obtained for all systems. The coordination competition between cyanide (CN(-)) and isocyanide (NC(-)) as well as between cyanate (OCN(-)) and isocyanate (NCO(-)) has been studied in the uranyl case. A clear preference for cyanide and isocyanate complexes is reported. The coordination of five ligands in the equatorial plane is rationalised by the analysis of the MO diagram of both systems. Moreover, the qualitative comparison of the two MO diagrams shows a high similarity in agreement with the isolobality concept. The existence of linear [Cp2UL5](-) organometallic U(VI) complexes is thus proposed, as well as the possibility of obtaining complexes of both types for U(VI) and U(V) with OCN(-) ligands. In addition, the U(IV) linear metallocene is calculated to be stable for the latter ligand.

RESUMO

Polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) initiated by the rare-earth borohydride complexes [Ln(BH(4))(3)(thf)(3)] (Ln=Nd, Sm) or [Sm(BH(4))(Cp*)(2)(thf)] (Cp*=eta-C(5)Me(5)) proceeds at ambient temperature to give rather syndiotactic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with molar masses M(n) higher than expected and quite broad molar mass distributions, which is consistent with a poor initiation efficiency. The polymerization of MMA was investigated by performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations on an eta-C(5)H(5) model metallocene and showed that in the reaction of [Eu(BH(4))(Cp)(2)] with MMA the borate [Eu(Cp)(2){(OBH(3))(OMe)C=C(Me)(2)}] (e-2) complex, which forms via the enolate [Eu(Cp)(2){O(OMe)C=C(Me)(2)}] (e), is calculated to be exergonic and is the most likely of all of the possible products. This product is favored because the reaction that leads to the formation of carboxylate [Eu(Cp)(2){OOC-C(Me)(=CH(2))}] (f) is thermodynamically favorable, but kinetically disfavored, and both of the potential products from a Markovnikov [Eu(Cp)(2){O(OMe)C-CH(Me)(CH(2)BH(3))}] (g) or anti-Markovnikov [Eu(Cp)(2){O(OMe)C-C(Me(2))(BH(3))}] (h) hydroboration reaction are also kinetically inaccessible. Similar computational results were obtained for the reaction of [Eu(BH(4))(3)] and MMA with all of the products showing extra stabilization. The DFT calculations performed by using [Eu(Cp)(2)(H)] to model the mechanism previously reported for the polymerization of MMA initiated by [Sm(Cp*)(2)(H)](2) confirmed the favorable exergonic formation of the intermediate [Eu(Cp)(2){O(OMe)C=C(Me)(2)}] (e'') as the kinetic product, this enolate species ultimately leads to the formation of PMMA as experimentally observed. Replacing H by BH(4) thus prevents the 1,4-addition of the [Eu(BH(4))(Cp)(2)] borohydride ligand to the first incoming MMA molecule and instead favors the formation of the borate complex e-2. This intermediate is the somewhat active species in the polymerization of MMA initiated by the borohydride precursors [Ln(BH(4))(3)(thf)(3)] or [Sm(BH(4))(Cp*)(2)(thf)].

RESUMO

Reaction of U(NEt(2))(4) with HS-2,4,6-(t)Bu(3)C(6)H(2) (HSMes) gave U(SMes)(3)(NEt(2))(py) (1), whereas similar treatment of U[N(SiMe(3))SiMe(2)CH(2)][N(SiMe(3))(2)](2) afforded U(SMes)[N(SiMe(3))(2)](3) (2) and U(SMes)(3)[N(SiMe(3))(2)]. The first neutral homoleptic uranium(IV) thiolate to have been crystallographically characterized, U(SMes)(4) (4), was isolated from the reaction of U(BH(4))(4) and KSMes. The first homoleptic thiolate complex of uranium(III), U(SMes)(3) (5), was synthesized by protonolysis of U[N(SiMe(3))(2)](3) with HSMes in cyclohexane. The crystal structure of 5 exhibits the novel eta(3) ligation mode for the arylthiolate ligand. Comparison of the crystal structure of 5 with those of the isomorphous lanthanide congeners Ln(SMes)(3) (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) indicates that the U-S, U-C(ipso)(), and U-C(ortho)() bond lengths are shorter than the corresponding ones in the 4f-element analogues, when taking into account the variation in the ionic radii of the metals. The distance between the uranium and the carbon atoms involved in the U...H-C epsilon agostic interaction of each thiolate ligand is shorter, by approximately 0.05 A, than that expected from a purely ionic bonding model. The lanthanide(III)/actinide(III) differentiation was analyzed by density functional theory (DFT). The nature of the M-S bond is shown to be ionic strongly polarized at the sulfur for M = U and iono-covalent (i.e. strongly ionic with low orbital interaction), for M = Ln. The strength of the U...H-C epsilon agostic interaction is proposed to be controlled by the maximization of the interaction between U(+) and S(-) under steric constraints. The eta(3) ligation mode of the arylthiolate ligand is also obtained from DFT.

RESUMO

The activation energies for the methyl exchange reactions between Cp2M-CH3 and H-CH3 have been calculated for M = Sc, Y and representative metals of the lanthanide family (La, Ce, Sm, Ho, Yb and Lu) with DFT(B3PW91) calculations with large-core pseudopotentials for M. The sigma-bond metathesis reactions are calculated to have lower activation energies for early lanthanides than for late lanthanides and any of group 3 metals. The relative activation barriers are analyzed using the NBO charge distributions in the reactant and in the transition states. It is shown that the methane needs to be polarized in the transition state as H((+delta))-CH3((-delta)) by the reactant, because this sigma-bond metathesis is best viewed as heterolytic cleavage of methane, leading to a proton transfer between two methyl groups in the field of an electropositive M metal. Early lanthanides, which are involved in strongly ionic metal-ligands bonds are thus associated with the lowest activation energies. The ionic radius and the steric effects influence the relative rates of reaction for the complexes of Sc, Y and Lu. In agreement with earlier works of Sherer et al., the experimental reactivity trends found by Tilley are reproduced best with Cp*2M-CH3 (Cp* = C5Me5) rather than Cp2M-CH3 (Cp = C5H5) because the steric bulk of C5Me5 deactivates most the complex where the metal has the smallest ionic radius (Sc). While the steric effects and the influence of the metal ionic radius cannot be neglected, these factors are not the only ones involved in determining the activation barriers of the sigma-bond metathesis reaction.

RESUMO

The decomposition process of ammine lanthanide metallocenes was studied by X-ray diffractometry, spectroscopy and theoretical investigations. A series of ammine-tris(eta(5)-cyclopentadienyl)lanthanide(III) complexes 1-Ln (Lanthanide (Ln)=Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb) was synthesised by the reaction of [Cp(3)Ln] complexes (Cp=cyclopentadienyl) with liquid ammonia at -78 degrees C and structurally characterised by X-ray diffraction methods, mass spectrometry and vibrational (IR, Raman) spectroscopy. Furthermore, amido-bis(eta(5)-cyclopentadienyl)lanthanide(III) complexes 2-Ln (Ln=Dy, Ho, Er, Yb) were synthesised by heating the respective ammine adduct 1-Ln in an inert gas atmosphere at temperatures of between 240 and 290 degrees C. X-ray diffraction studies, mass spectrometry and vibrational (IR, Raman) spectroscopy were carried out for several 2-Ln species and proved the formation of dimeric mu(2)-bridged compounds. Species 1-Ln are highly reactive coordination compounds and showed different behaviour regarding the decomposition to 2-Ln. The reaction of 1-Ln and 2-Ln with inorganic bases yielded lanthanide nitride LnN powders with an estimated crystallite size of between 40 and 90 nm at unprecedented low temperatures of 240 to 300 degrees C. Temperature-dependent X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations were performed and showed that the decomposition reaction yielded nanocrystalline material. Structural optimisations were carried out for 1-Ln and 2-Ln by employing density functional (DFT) calculations. A good agreement was found between the observed and calculated structural parameters. Also, Gibbs free energies were calculated for 1-Ln, 2-Ln and the pyrolysis reaction to the nitride material, and were found to fit well with the expected ranges.
