RESUMO

The hard-shelled seed industry plays an important role in the global agricultural economy. In fact, only considering hazelnut and walnut, the global nut supply is over 5.6 tons. As a result considerable amounts are produced year by year, burnt or discarded as waste, bypassing a potential source of valuable compounds or features. This review deals with the recent scientific literature on their chemical composition as well as functional applications as an approach to sustain the utilization of the main byproduct derived from industry. Indeed, nutshells have received great interest due to their lignin, antioxidant, physical and mechanical features. It was found that these properties vary among cultivars and localities of plantation, influencing physical and structural features. The inconsistencies regarding the above-mentioned properties of nutshells lead to exploring the status of hazelnut and walnut shell applications in sustainable bio-economy chains. In fact, in terms of potential applications, the state of the art links their use to the construction industry and the manufacture of materials, such as resin or plastic composites, particleboards or construction panels, or vital infrastructure and as a filler in cement pavements. However, their current use continues bypassing their great antioxidant potential and their interesting chemical and mechanical features.

RESUMO

Executive functions are established as vital in learning, as well as in the development of psycholinguistic skills crucial to learning a second language. The present study analyzes relationships between variables linked to executive functioning and to academic achievement in English as a foreign language (EFL). The participants were 519 primary school students between the ages of 10 and 12. The results show a tendency to greater sustained and selective attention and consequently better attention control and concentration on task when academic achievement in English was higher. Our discriminant analysis verifies that sustained and selective attention, attention deficit, and concentration on task explain and predict group membership in EFL achievement groups (low, medium, and high achievement). It is important to plan activities to develop executive functioning, alongside the regular curriculum content, in order to improve learning and acquisition of psycholinguistic skills, the foundation for bilingualism or second-language learning.(AU)

To determine the effects of pre-harvest calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and potassium (K) spraying on the antioxidant activity and capacity of hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) shells, as an approach to sustain the utilization of the main residue derived from this industry, four commercial hazelnut (Tonda di Giffoni) orchards located in Southern Chile (Cunco, Gorbea, Perquenco and Radal), during the 2018/19 season were sprayed three times with five combinations of Ca (300 and 600 mg L-1), Mg (300 and 600 mg L-1) and K (300 and 600 mg L-1). Yield components were determined in harvested whole nuts, whereas Ca, Mg and K concentrations, as well as total phenolic compounds, free radical scavenging antioxidant activity, and oxygen radical absorbance capacity, were determined in shells. All spray treatments with both Ca, Mg and K combinations showed a significant interaction between locality and treatment (L × T) on increased stabilized nut yield (kg ha-1) in comparison with the control treatments, whereas nut quality was differentially affected by treatment and orchard locality, thus confirming a significant L × T relationship regarding nut length and kernel yield. However, locality showed a major effect on kernels and shells. A significant relationship was determined between locality and the Ca, Mg and K spraying (L × T) concerning antioxidant compounds such as phenolics, whose amounts exceeded those of the control treatments by three times. Antioxidant capacity and activity in shells showed a significant L × T relationship, and nutshells collected from Cunco showed remarkably (3-4 times) higher levels of these factors than the other evaluated localities. Interactions between spray treatment and orchard location were responsible for the different values obtained in the experiments, confirming the influence of the environment on the efficacy of the treatments. Finally, these shells are worth further study as an interesting residue of the hazelnut industry due to their nutritional and antioxidant properties.

RESUMO

Farmed salmonids show alterations in bone structure that result in skeletal deformities during formation, repair, and regeneration processes, with loss of mineralization at the level of the axial skeleton, mainly the head and spine, affecting their quality of life and even causing death. Despite improving factors, such as farming conditions, diets, and genetics, bone alterations appear more frequently in farmed fish than in wild fish. Thus, we used SEM-EDX, and TGA-DSC to study bone mineralization in farmed and wild rainbow trouts. As expected, we found significant differences in the nutritional parameters of farmed and wild fish (p < 0.05). Microstructural analyses indicated that farmed fish have a more robust mineral structure (p < 0.05), confirming the differences in mineralization and microstructure between both groups. However, the mechanisms regulating absorption and distribution in the organism and their effect on bone mineralization remain to be known. In our study, the combined use of techniques such as SEM-EDX and TGA-DSC allows a clearer assessment and detailed characterization beneficial to understanding the relationship between diet control and bone microstructure.

SUMMARY: In salmon farming systems, X-ray images are used to evaluate the spine and fins, but these do not allow quantifying the minerals that make up the bone, for different techniques that are destructive are used. Variable Pressure Scanning Electron Microscopy (VP SEM) coupled to an Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy detector (EDX), allows us to analyze the microstructure and at the same time determine chemical elements, percentages, and distribution present at specific points in a sample. Five control and five jaw deformity trout, from freshwater and in the smolt stage were used. The structure and mineralization of the bone were analyzed, an average six quantification points were chosen per region of interest (ROI) and then they were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (VP SEM-EDX). The data obtained have shown the average mass percentage of calcium in trout joint bone was 8.07 % and 14.48 % in jaw deformity and control trout, respectively; and the average mass percentage of phosphorus is 4.07 % and 7.60 %, in jaw deformity and control trout, respectively. Other elements present in the sample were also identified, such as magnesium, sodium, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, fluorine, zinc, aluminium, and iron, with special interest the increase of carbon in the analyzed samples with mandibular deformity and the presence of aluminum in all samples. The VP SEM-EDX Technique allows direct evaluation, without destruction of the sample and with minimal sample preparation. In bone, the most frequent application of SEM-EDX is the measurement of the content of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) and the relationship that exists between these elements, calcium/phosphorus (Ca/P), in the sample. At the same time, the technique allows us to detect other microelements from water or food that can eventually cause alterations in fish, confirming the hypothesis that elemental microanalysis is useful for salmon farming.

RESUMO

Organotin (OT) based Antifouling Systems (AFS) were globally banned by the AFS Convention since 2008, but the Republic of Cabo Verde did not ratify this Convention, nor did it develop a national legislation to control OT-AFS. Gemophos viverratus imposex and butyltin tissue contamination were assessed around the São Vicente Island (Cabo Verde) in 2019 and compared with the data available from 2012. The vas deferens sequence index (VDSI), the relative penis length (RPL), the percentage of females with imposex (%I) and the percentage of sterilized females (%S) in 2019 ranged from 0 to 4.0, 0-84.4%, 0-100% and 0-5.1%, respectively, whilst TBT reached maximum values of ≈30 ng TBT-Sn g-1 dw in the whelk tissues. These values are very similar to those registered in 2012, which indicates that TBT pollution has not decreased over the years, in contrast to the declining trend observed worldwide.

RESUMO

Nucella lapillus imposex has been monitored in Ria de Aveiro (Portugal) in order to understand the evolution of organotin (OT) pollution after the EU ban on OT-based antifouling systems (OT-AFS). A rapid decrease of imposex occurred, but a countercurrent tendency upsurged recently (2018-2019) with a slight increase of imposex at some sites, instead of a continuous decline towards a complete recovery. In 2018 the vas deferens sequence index ranged between 0.6 and 1.0 across stations and the percentage of females with imposex varied from 63 to 100%. In 2019 these parameters varied between 0.4 and 1.0 and 37-100%, while the concentration of butyltins (TBT, DBT, MBT) in the dogwhelk tissues were < 1 ng Sn g-1 dw. Although N. lapillus imposex levels are low they are indicative of OT pollution. The full recovery of N. lapillus imposex in the future is uncertain and a cause for concern.

In recent years there has been an increase in research on mindfulness as a state or dispositional trait, and on its relationship with different variables pertaining to the health and well-being of the individual. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship and the predictive character of life satisfaction and prefrontal symptoms in dispositional mindfulness levels in rural women. The participants were 239 women from different rural communities in Spain, between the ages of 17 and 87 years (M= 56.13, SD= 4.98). The results confirmed that high levels of life satisfaction and low levels of prefrontal symptoms and executive control problems were predictive of a higher level of dispositional mindfulness in the women evaluated. After discussing our findings with their clinical and socio health implications, we recommend further inquiry into this specific line o research, given the proven benefits of mindfulness for general personal well-being, where it acts as a protective factor for mental, physical and emotional health (AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The cell cycle checkpoint G1/S, dependent on cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) 4 amplification/overexpression and retinoblastoma phosphorylation, is altered in most anaplastic oligodendrogliomas (AOs). OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of palbociclib, an oral inhibitor of CDK4/6 with proven efficacy in breast cancer, in patients with AO. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival at 6 months. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, open-label, phase II trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of palbociclib in patients with AO who progressed on radiotherapy and chemotherapy with histologically and molecularly confirmed grade 3 oligodendroglioma and conserved retinoblastoma protein (pRb) expression by immunohistochemistry. Patients were treated with palbociclib (125 mg/day) for 3/1 weeks on/off. RESULTS: Overall, 34 patients were enrolled across 10 hospitals in the Spanish Group of Neuro-Oncology (GEINO) study. The study was stopped early owing to the lack of efficacy, with 74% of evaluable patients progressing within 6 months, which was insufficient to consider palbociclib as an active drug in this population. Within the median follow-up of 12 months, the median progression-free survival was 2.8 months [95% confidence interval (CI) 2.6-3.1] and the median overall survival was 32.1 months (95% CI 5.1-59.2). There were no partial or complete responses; only 13 patients (38%) achieved stable disease as the best response. Palbociclib was well tolerated, with neutropenia (grade 3 or higher: 58.8%) and thrombocytopenia (grade 3 or higher: 14.7%) as the most common adverse events (AEs). Both AEs had no significant impact. CONCLUSION: Despite the good tolerance, palbociclib monotherapy did not show favorable efficacy against recurrent AO. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT0253032 (retrospectively registered on 21 August 2015).

RESUMO

Ocean acidification and warming (OA-W) result mainly from the absorption of carbon dioxide and heat by the oceans, altering its physical and chemical properties and affecting carbonate secretion by marine calcifiers such as gastropods. These processes are ongoing, and the projections of their aggravation are not encouraging. This work assesses the concomitant effect of the predicted pH decrease and temperature rise on early life stages of the neogastropod Tritia reticulata (L.), a common scavenger of high ecological importance on coastal ecosystems of the NE Atlantic. Veligers were exposed for 14 days to 12 OA-W experimental scenarios generated by a factorial design of three pH levels (targeting 8.1, 7.8 and 7.5) at four temperatures (16, 18, 20 and 22 °C). Results reveal effects of both pH and temperature (T °C) on larval development, growth, shell integrity and survival, individually or interactively at different exposure times. All endpoints were initially driven by pH, with impaired development and high mortalities being recorded in the first week, constrained by the most acidic scenarios (pHtarget 7.5). Development was also significantly driven by T °C, and its acceleration with warming was observed for the remaining exposure time. Still, by the end of this 2-weeks trial, larval performance and survival were highly affected by the interaction between pH and T °C: growth under warming was evident but only for T °C ≤ 20 °C and carbonate saturation (pHtarget ≥ 7.8). In fact, carbonate undersaturation rendered critical larval mortality (100%) at 22 °C, and the occurrence of extremely vulnerable, unshelled specimens in all other tested temperatures. As recruitment cohorts are the foundation for future populations, our results point towards the extreme vulnerability of this species in case tested scenarios become effective that, according to the IPCC, are projected for the northern hemisphere, where this species is ubiquitous, by the end of the century. Increased veliger mortality associated with reduced growth rates, shell dissolution and loss under OA-W projected scenarios will reduce larval performance, jeopardizing T. reticulata subsistence.

While there are multiple variables that influence learning and academic achievement, current research considers executive functions and daily stress to be essential. The general aim of this study was to examine how variables pertaining to executive functions and childhood stress relate to academic achievement, obtaining information from 649 primary school students for this purpose. Three groups (low-medium-high) were formed according to levels of executive functioning and levels of childhood stress. The results showed significant differences in academic achievement between high and medium-low groups, both in executive functions and in overall stress. We conclude with a call for programs that improve executive functioning, as well as psychoeducational interventions that promote acquisition and development of coping strategies to manage stressful situations, with the ultimate purpose of improving academic achievement

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Within the broad spectrum of variables that influence learning and consequently academic achievement, affective-motivational factors related to daily stress are particularly important. The aim of this study was to analyze associations between daily childhood stress, learning strategies and academic motivation, by analyzing how they differ across 3 achievement groups (low, medium and high), and the predictive-ability of these groupings. METHOD: Non-experimental methodology in a cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational, inferential and multivariate study. A total of 535 primary school students from Cantabria, Spain, aged 9 to 12 (M = 10.72; SD = 0.67), participated in the study. They completed the Inventario de Estrés Cotidiano Infantil [Children's Daily Stress Inventory] and the Diagnóstico Integral del Estudio [Comprehensive Diagnosis of Study], and their school grades were recorded for the subjects of Language Arts, English as a Foreign Language, and Mathematics. RESULTS: The results showed positive, significant relationships between all the variables pertaining to learning and academic achievement; each of these variables, in turn, had negative, significant relationships with global daily stress (as well as with health, school and family stress). The multivariate discriminant analysis explained the predictive role of complementary strategies, school stress, attitude toward study and self-concept, in different levels of general academic achievement. CONCLUSIONS: There is a need for interventions in self-regulated learning strategies that would serve as a preventive measure, and in development of coping strategies for stressful situations inside and outside the educational context

RESUMO

Statoliths are nonskeletal calcified structures included in most invertebrates' gravireceptors. They have been identified and characterized in several gastropod and cephalopod molluscs and have proved to be very useful for age estimation, growth studies, and connectivity analysis, among other applications. Beyond the scarce available records on their occurrence in Class Bivalvia, statoliths are yet to be documented in the grooved carpet shell, Ruditapes decussatus, a species of high ecological and commercial value. An easy method for the extraction and processing of R. decussatus statoliths is described herein. The statolith growth was followed from the initial shell length (SL) of 2.5-3.5 mm (seed commercial size T1.5) for a period of 6 months in a nursery facility located in the Ria de Aveiro (an estuarine system in NW Portugal). The relationship between statolith diameter (StD) and SL follows the function StD=14.305 SL0.254 (N=173; r=0.855, p<0.001). All statoliths observed showed similar morphostructure and general chemistry: hard, translucent spheres of crystalline calcium oxalate (whewellite), with a central nucleus delimited by a growth check of 6.7±1.0 µm in diameter, possibly as a result of growth arrest during metamorphosis, a metamorphic ring, as described for their gastropod counterparts. Subsequent studies should validate this and will involve a search for the occurrence of additional checks that may potentially be present in older specimens and if they are, would open a new range of most promising applications for bivalve statoliths.

RESUMO

Two cDNAs of RXR were isolated, for the first time, from the ivory shell, Babylonia japonica, and the transcriptional activities were tested in vitro to compare with other gastropod (Thais clavigera and Nucella lapillus) RXR isoforms. The transcriptional activities of all of these RXR isoforms were significantly induced by mammalian RXR agonist, 9-cis retinoic acid (9cRA). The transcriptional activity of T. clavigera RXR-1 was also examined by using 9cRA and 16 organotin compounds, and significant ligand-dependent transactivations were observed by 9cRA and 5 organotins (tributyltin (TBT), tetrabutyltin (TeBT), tripropyltin (TPrT), tricyclohexyltin (TcHT) and triphenyltin (TPhT)). These 5 organotins also induced significant transcriptional activities in N. lapillus and B. japonica RXR isoforms. These 4 organotins, except for TeBT, have been reported to promote the development of imposex after a month of a single injection each, using female T. clavigera. To investigate the function of gastropod RXR isoforms, the effects of mammalian specific pan-agonist, PA024, and pan-antagonist, HX531, were examined, and significant induction of transcriptional activity by PA024 was demonstrated in these gastropod RXR isoforms. The additions of HX531 significantly suppressed the transcriptional activities of these gastropod RXR isoforms by 9cRA and 5 organotins. Using the mammalian two retinoic acid response elements, the transcriptional activities by 2 agonists, 9cRA and PA024, were different among the RXR isoforms of each gastropod species. With retinoid X response element (RXRE), transcriptional activities of TcRXR-1, BjRXR-1, and NlRXRa were significantly higher than those of TcRXR-2, BjRXR-2, and NlRXRb. Transcriptional activities of TcRXR-2, BjRXR-2, and NlRXRb, however, were significantly higher than those of TcRXR-1, BjRXR-1, and NlRXRa with thyroid hormone response element, TREpal. Thus, induction of imposex in prosobranch gastropods is strongly suggested to be triggered by 9cRA and certain organotins, such as TBT and TPhT through the activation of RXRs. These gastropod RXRs might control the different gene transcription by forming homo- or heterodimer complex with their own isoforms. These findings will contribute to our understanding of the fundamentals of the endocrine system in molluscs, particularly on RXR signaling pathway.

RESUMO

IMO's Anti-Fouling Systems convention banned the use of organotin-based antifouling systems in 2008 as the ultimate effort to stop tributyltin (TBT) inputs into the marine environment. One of the hazardous effects of TBT is imposex (the superimposition of male sexual characters onto gastropod females), a phenomenon that may cause female sterility and the gastropod populations decline. Despite previous European Union legislation had already been shown effective in reducing the imposex levels along the Portuguese coast, this study intends to confirm these decreasing trends after 2008 and describe the global evolution in the last 15 years. Imposex levels were assessed in two bioindicators - the dog-whelk Nucella lapillus and the netted-whelk Nassarius reticulatus (Gastropoda, Prosobranchia) - in 2011 and 2014, and the results were compared with previous years. Both species showed progressive decreasing trends in imposex levels over the last 15 years; median values of the vas deferens sequence index (VDSI) fell from 3.96 to 0.78 in N. lapillus and from 3.39 to 0.29 in N. reticulatus. The temporal/spatial evolution of imposex suggests an apparent shift of TBT hotspots, being now restricted to fishing ports and marinas in detriment of large commercial harbours where TBT levels fell rapidly. Butyltins were measured in the whole tissues of N. lapillus females collected in 2014: monobutyltin (MBT) varied from < DL (detection limit: 1 ng Sn/g) to 13 ng Sn/g dw, dibutyltin (DBT) from 2.2 to 27 ng Sn/g dw and TBT from 1.5 to 55 ng Sn/g dw. Although TBT body burden has declined over time, the butyltin degradation index ([MBT]+[DBT])/[TBT] exhibited values < 1 in c. a. 90% of the sites assessed, suggesting that recent TBT inputs are still widespread in the Portuguese coast eventually due to illegal use of TBT antifouling systems and TBT desorption from sediments.

RESUMO

Antifouling (AF) systems provide the most cost-effective protection against biofouling. Several AF biocides have, however, caused deleterious effects in the environment. Subsequently, new compounds have emerged that claim to be more environment-friendly, but studies on their toxicity and environmental risk are necessary in order to ensure safety. This work aimed to assess the toxicity of three emerging AF biocides, tralopyril, triphenylborane pyridine (TPBP) and capsaicin, towards non-target freshwater organisms representing three trophic levels: algae (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii), crustacean (Daphnia magna) and fish (Danio rerio). From the three tested biocides, tralopyril had the strongest inhibitory effect on C. reinhardtii growth, effective quantum yield and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content. TPBP caused sub-lethal effects at high concentrations (100 and 250µgL-1), and capsaicin had no significant effects on algae. In the D. magna acute immobilisation test, the most toxic compound was TPBP. However, tralopyril has a short half-life and quickly degrades in water. With exposure solution renewals, tralopyril's toxicity was similar to TPBP. Capsaicin did not cause any effects on daphnids. In the zebrafish embryo toxicity test (zFET) the most toxic compound was tralopyril with a 120h - LC50 of 5µgL-1. TPBP's 120h - LC50 was 447.5µgL-1. Capsaicin did not cause mortality in zebrafish up to 1mgL-1. Sub-lethal effects on the proteome of zebrafish embryos were analysed for tralopyril and TPBP. Both general stress-related and compound-specific protein changes were observed. Five proteins involved in energy metabolism, eye structure and cell differentiation were commonly regulated by both compounds. Tralopyril specifically induced the upregulation of 6 proteins implicated in energy metabolism, cytoskeleton, cell division and mRNA splicing whilst TPBP lead to the upregulation of 3 proteins involved in cytoskeleton, cell growth and protein folding. An ecological risk characterization was performed for a hypothetical freshwater marina. This analysis identified capsaicin as an environment-friendly compound while tralopyril and TPBP seem to pose a risk to freshwater ecosystems. Noneless, more studies on the characterization of the toxicity, behaviour and fate of these AF biocides in the environment are necessary since this information directly affects the outcome of the risk assessment.

RESUMO

Handmade anatomy models may be a complementary useful tool to dissection and prosection, since the student interacts with the body structure in a three-dimensional way. In this study homemade dough (biscuit) was used to create a brain model. Two anatomy trainees from the medical school of the Universidade Federal Fluminense (Niteroi Brazil) were challenged to model the gross anatomy of the lateral aspect of the brain. They prepared and handled homemade dough to produce a simple and low cost model of the cerebral hemisphere. Styrofoam balls fixed by pins were used to create a framework, and dough rolls were modeled in order to create the brain sulci and gyri. At the end, the model closely resembled three-dimensional features of the human brain. Also, brain lobes were easily identified, as well as some major gyri and sulci, such as the central and lateral sulci and the precentral and postcentral gyri. In conclusion, the three-dimensional spatial characteristics, the clear identification of sulci and gyri and the brain lobes, make this model a good tool for students who only require basic anatomy in their curriculum.
