Anecdotal reports suggest that the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 pandemic (COVID-19) has increased overweight and obesity prevalence in dogs and cats. The present report aimed to perform a retrospective overweight/obesity survey on 1,001 consecutive cases attended in the Veterinary Clinics Hospital from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul during its reopening to the public after months closed due to the pandemic. The overall overweight or obesity observed prevalence was 36.63%; being the frequency in cats slightly greater (38.37%) than compared to dogs (35.76%). No local increase in these frequencies was detected. Neutering (dogs and cats), age greater than 10 years (dogs), and male gender (cats) were factors associated with overweight/obesity. Bodyweight was not registered in about 30% of the medical records, while the body condition score was not registered in about 50% of the cases. These flaws were more often observed in feline medical records and efforts to improve these data records are warranted.


Especula-se que a pandemia pelo novo coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) tenha agravado a prevalência de sobrepeso e obesidade em cães e gatos. O presente artigo teve como objetivo realizar um levantamento de sobrepeso/obesidade, o qual avaliou os registros de 1001 casos consecutivos atendidos no Hospital de Clínicas Veterinárias da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, durante a reabertura da instituição ao público, após meses fechada devido à pandemia. Observou-se uma prevalência de sobrepeso ou de obesidade de 36,63%, sendo a frequência ligeiramente maior em gatos (38,37%) do que em cães (35,76%) e não sendo documentado aumento local na prevalência. Castrações (cães e gatos), idade > 10 anos (cães) e sexo masculino (gatos) foram associadas ao sobrepeso/obesidade. Em cerca de 30% das fichas não havia peso registrado, e em cerca de 50% não havia registro de ECC. Essas falhas foram mais frequentes em fichas de felinos e demandam medidas para aumentar o registro desses dados pelas equipes clínicas.

Rapid depletion of aquifers in semiarid and arid regions threatens water security. This holds true especially in emerging countries where insufficient knowledge about aquifer systems precludes the implementation of advanced management measures, such as managed aquifer recharge. This study deals with the generation of baseline knowledge for the assessment of aquifers in arid and semiarid regions where artificial recharge with reclaimed water gains increasing impetus. The Guadalupe aquifer in Baja California provides water to 57% of the Mexican wine industry. Recent plans foresee a partial replenishment of its depleted groundwater reserves by transferring treated waste water from the Mexico-USA border for irrigation. The aquifer demonstrated to have a rapid response by rising the water table of about +20 m in relation to natural recharge under an intense rainfall period of 236 mm. Two predominant recharge sources were identified based on a geochemical multi-tracer approach: (a) water of modern age (<5 yr, >1.8 TU) and mixed water of recent-submodern age (3H 0.8-1.8 TU), and (b) sub-modern waters that were recharged before 1952 (3H < 0.5 TU). Water of the first type originate in the main Guadalupe stream, which has a more depleted average δ18O isotope value (-7.8‰) than average local rainwater (-2.0‰). The stream water initially has a Na-HCO3 composition and recharges the entire Calafia zone and most groundwater along the riverbed across the valley. Water of the second type is mostly derived from hill-slope groundwater that has a stable isotope composition of mixed local rainwater and a NaCl composition. High total dissolved solids >2 g l-1 together with enriched NO3- and Se concentrations characterize groundwater in the downstream the Porvenir zone. The geochemical age of this older, hill-slope groundwater suggests that its replenishment takes at least several decades when it becomes exhausted.

A study on dissolved nitrate, ammonium, phosphate and silicate concentrations was carried out in various water compartments (rivers, drains, channels, springs, wetland, groundwater, tidal floodplains and ocean water) in the Mexicali Valley and the Colorado River delta between 2012 and 2013, to assess modern potential nutrient sources into the marine system after river damming. While nitrate and silicate appear to have a significant input into the coastal ocean, phosphate is rapidly transformed into a particulate phase. Nitrate is, in general, rapidly bio-consumed in the surface waters rich in micro algae, but its excess (up to 2.02 mg L(-1) of N from NO3 in winter) in the Santa Clara Wetland represents a potential average annual source to the coast of 59.4×10(3)kg N-NO3. Despite such localized inputs, continuous regional groundwater flow does not appear to be a source of nitrate to the estuary and coastal ocean. Silicate is associated with groundwaters that are also geothermally influenced. A silicate receiving agricultural drain adjacent to the tidal floodplain had maximum silicate concentrations of 16.1 mg L(-1) Si-SiO2. Seepage of drain water and/or mixing with seawater during high spring tides represents a potential source of dissolved silicate and nitrate into the Gulf of California.

Standard clinical practice recommends minimal doses of vasoactive drugs during weaning of patients from mechanical ventilation. However there are currently no clinical data to inform clinicians about whether the use of noradrenaline during weaning predisposes to weaning failure. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the necessity of the vasopressor noradrenaline in mechanically ventilated patients recovering from septic shock changed the extubation outcome. A total of 656 patients recovering from septic shock on mechanical ventilation were selected from intensive care units in two university hospitals. Patients receiving noradrenaline at the time of weaning and case-controls not taking noradrenaline were matched for age, gender, haemodynamic and ventilatory parameters, aetiology of respiratory failure and APACHE II score. One hundred and forty-five patients who successfully tolerated a spontaneous breathing trial were extubated while on noradrenaline therapy and the reintubation rate was measured. In the noradrenaline group, the mean dose of noradrenaline during initial shock treatment was 0.52+/-0.29 microg/kg/min and 0.12+/-0.10 microg/kg/min during weaning. The reintubation rate was 12/63 (19%) in the noradrenaline group and 15/82 (18.3%) in the control group (P=1.00). Intensive care unit mortality was also similar in both groups (10/63, 15.9%) for noradrenaline patients and (11/82, 13.4%) for control patients (P=0.81). Arterial blood gases and ventilatory and haemodynamic parameters were similar in all patients regardless of weaning success. We did not find that the use of noradrenaline at the time of weaning was associated with extubation failure. Low doses of noradrenaline may not preclude weaning from mechanical ventilation.

Experimental studies were undertaken to compare the vector competence of Culex (Melanoconion) taeniopus Dyar and Knab, Culex (Melanoconion) ocossa Dyar and Knab, and Psorophora confinnis (Lynch Arribalzalga) from Central America for epizootic (IAB) and enzootic (IE) strains of Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) virus. Virus infection and dissemination rates were significantly higher in Cx. taeniopus orally exposed to IE as compared to those orally exposed to IAB virus. In contrast, both infection and dissemination rates were similar in Cx. ocossa exposed to either IAB or IE strains of VEE virus. Thus, susceptibility to epizootic and enzootic strains of VEE virus seems to be species specific within the subgenus Culex (Melanoconion). Both species transmitted each strain of VEE virus after intrathoracic inoculation, indicating that a midgut barrier affected vector competence in these species. Psorophora confinnis was equally susceptible to both IAB and IE viruses, but apparently had a salivary gland barrier, as only 1 of 16 mosquitoes with a disseminated infection transmitted VEE virus by bite.

The Cosmic Radiation Environment and Dosimetry experiment (CREDO) has been operational on board the Advanced Photovoltaics & Electronics Experiment Spacecraft since August 1994. Extensive measurements of cosmic ray linear energy transfer spectra (using data to January 1996) and total dose (using data to November 1994) have been made, and compared with predictions of standard models. Detailed consideration of spacecraft shielding effects have been made. Predictions are shown to overestimate the measured linear energy transfer spectra. The CREAM experiment was flown on STS-63 in the SpaceHab module. Results show penetration of high energy electrons into the SpaceHab module.

Amebic liver abscess is an uncommon disease in the northern states of North America with 11 cases seen among approximately 500,000 Mount Sinai Hospital admissions over a 16-year period. Five of 11 cases originated in, or had recently visited South America. In three of these, and two patients with concomitant intestinal amebiasis, the diagnosis was suspected on admission. Diagnosis after admission was rapid, mean 5 days, compared with a mean of 13 days in pyogenic liver abscess. There was a higher incidence of male patients, nine males versus two females which was greater than the excess found in our pyogenic abscesses, 22 versus 16. Multiplicity was less common than in pyogenic abscess, 27 versus 50%, respectively. All three patients with multiple abscesses survived with surgical drainage and antibiotic therapy despite numerous complicating factors, including secondary bacterial infection. One patient resolved with drug treatment only; all others were treated with drugs and concomitant drainage; surgical drainage in earlier cases, and percutaneous drainage more recently. There was a single postoperative death. Drug treatment is the first therapeutic modality, and if recovery is delayed more than 2 days percutaneous aspiration should be carried out. This was successful in four cases. Surgery should seldom be required with present methods of accurately localizing amebic liver abscess, but is essential for ruptured abscess with peritonitis, and liver abscess with associated intestinal problems such as toxic megacolon, colonic perforation, or fulminating colitis. There has been a significant reduction in mortality of amebic liver abscess over the past 50 years and particularly within the past decade.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
