RESUMO
Six hundred individuals of pure Dutch ancestry have been typed for their erythrocyte phosphoglucose isomerase phenotypes by starch gel and cellulose acetate electrophoresis. In two individuals a variant phenotype was discovered. One phenotype was found to be indistinguishable from PGI-Phillips. The other variant would appear to be a new phenotype and has been designated PGI-Jager.

Adenosine deaminase of phenotype ADA was partially purified by chromatography on CM-Sephadex C-50 and ammonium sulphate precipitation. With DEAE-Sephadex A-50 three isozymes could be detected. a. The KM values for the substrate adenosine were found to be 30 muM for each isozyme. b. pH optimum was 7.0 and the molecular weight estimated by gel filtration was found to be 30 000 for each isozyme. c. The heat stability of RBC-ADA type 1-1 was greater than type 1-2. The isozyme in type 2-1 representing the electrophoretic band of phenotype ADA2-2 is the most labile. d. ATP, ADP, AMP and cyclic AMP, PCMB and 6-methylmercaptopurine riboside were found to be competitive inhibitors with ADA in all three isozymes.

The results of the electrophoretic phenotyping of some genetic markers (haptoglobin, group specific component, transferrin, haemoglobin, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phospho-gluconate dehydrogenase) in two tribal Indian populations from Surinam are presented. Most of the gene frequencies fit well into the pattern of frequencies of the Amerindian Carib group. The finding of Hb AS and GDA in a small number of individuals, mainly Caribs, demonstrates some admixture by Negroes.
