RESUMO

The use of more appropriate kinetic models can assist in improving ethanol fermentation under conditions of very high gravity (VHG) and high cell density (HCD), in order to obtain higher amounts of ethanol in the broth combined with high productivity. The aim of this study was to model fed-batch ethanol fermentation under VHG/HCD conditions, at different temperatures, considering three types of inhibition (substrate, ethanol, and cells). Fermentations were carried out using different temperatures (28 ≤ [Formula: see text] (°C) ≤ 34), inoculum sizes (50 ≤ [Formula: see text] (g L-1) ≤ 125), and substrate concentrations in the must (258 ≤ [Formula: see text] (g L-1) ≤ 436). In the proposed model, the cell inhibition power parameter varied with the temperature and inoculum size, while the cell yield coefficient varied with inoculum size and substrate concentration in the must. Hence, it was possible to propose correlations for the cell inhibition power parameter ([Formula: see text]) and for the cell yield coefficient ([Formula: see text]), as functions of the fermentation conditions. Simulations of fed-batch ethanol fermentations at different temperatures, under VHG/HCD conditions, were performed using the proposed correlations. Experimental validation showed that the model was able to accurately predict the dynamic behavior of the fermentations in terms of the concentrations of viable cells, total cells, ethanol, and substrate.

Abstract This study seeks to reflect on the movement towards the construction of Health Care Networks based on hermeneutic foundations, notably on the notion of Spiel and its repercussions for Collective Health. It was based on the experience of evaluative research of qualitative approach on the Maternal and Child Health Care Network developed in the state of Ceará. The discussion lists three units, namely: organization and operation of health services in networks; Hermeneutical game: fundamentals and relationships; and, Health Care Networks and the Spiel: a possible approach? From this, it was possible to understand that the movement towards the constitution of the networks goes beyond the technical dimension and the availability of equipment, devices and subjects. Sometimes it is able to constitute itself independently of the design already formatted by managers and health professionals. The Network is also built from the subjects themselves, whether they are users of health services or not and it is perceived as something in movement and that is renewed in constant repetition. It is independent of the performance of each of the subjects that compose it. The Network itself is the subject itself, as well as the Spiel.

RESUMO

The recalcitrant structures of sugarcane straw and related lignocellulosic biomasses require a pretreatment step to enable a better enzymatic attack during the hydrolysis. Factors like the energy consumption and the formation of inhibitors require the optimization of the pretreatment step. Thus, the influence of different severity factors (SF) on hydrothermal (also called liquid hot water, LHW) pretreatment was evaluated using a factorial design 22 with central point. The obtained results showed that low values of SF (<3.39) did not promote reasonable alteration in the sugarcane straw structures, whereas high SF values (>4.70) resulted in loss of hydrolyzed sugars, generation of inhibitors such as furfural, and formation of pseudo-lignin structures, despite high hemicellulose removal (∼97%). The residence time exhibited low influence on LHW. An optimum condition was found for the process (10 min and 195 °C) with low cellulose solubilization (9.80%) and a reasonable hemicellulose removal (85.45%).

RESUMO

Objective: to analyze possible negative effects of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) on the success of bariatric surgery. Methods: we evaluated forty patients undergoing bariatric surgery and with regular post-operative follow-up of at least one year. To all, we applied the questionnaire advocated in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV) of the American Psychiatric Association for ADHD, as well as analyzed their postoperative data. Results: fifteen (38%) patients presented a positive questionnaire for ADHD. Patients with ADHD presented higher BMI than patients without the disorder (45.8 vs. 40.9 kg/m2, p=0.017), and the difference remained in all postoperative stages. There was no statistically significant difference in surgery success (33.3% x 66.7%, p=0.505) or in BMI reduction (30.71% x 31.88%, p=0.671) one year after the procedure. Conclusion: ADHD patients have a higher BMI. However, the presence of ADHD does not influence the success of bariatric surgery and the reduction of BMI.

An inexpensive, noninvasive system that could accurately classify flying insects would have important implications for entomological research, and allow for the development of many useful applications in vector and pest control for both medical and agricultural entomology. Given this, the last sixty years have seen many research efforts devoted to this task. To date, however, none of this research has had a lasting impact. In this work, we show that pseudo-acoustic optical sensors can produce superior data; that additional features, both intrinsic and extrinsic to the insect's flight behavior, can be exploited to improve insect classification; that a Bayesian classification approach allows to efficiently learn classification models that are very robust to over-fitting, and a general classification framework allows to easily incorporate arbitrary number of features. We demonstrate the findings with large-scale experiments that dwarf all previous works combined, as measured by the number of insects and the number of species considered.

RESUMO

Most time series data mining algorithms use similarity search as a core subroutine, and thus the time taken for similarity search is the bottleneck for virtually all time series data mining algorithms, including classification, clustering, motif discovery, anomaly detection, and so on. The difficulty of scaling a search to large datasets explains to a great extent why most academic work on time series data mining has plateaued at considering a few millions of time series objects, while much of industry and science sits on billions of time series objects waiting to be explored. In this work we show that by using a combination of four novel ideas we can search and mine massive time series for the first time. We demonstrate the following unintuitive fact: in large datasets we can exactly search under Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) much more quickly than the current state-of-the-art Euclidean distance search algorithms. We demonstrate our work on the largest set of time series experiments ever attempted. In particular, the largest dataset we consider is larger than the combined size of all of the time series datasets considered in all data mining papers ever published. We explain how our ideas allow us to solve higher-level time series data mining problems such as motif discovery and clustering at scales that would otherwise be untenable. Moreover, we show how our ideas allow us to efficiently support the uniform scaling distance measure, a measure whose utility seems to be underappreciated, but which we demonstrate here. In addition to mining massive datasets with up to one trillion datapoints, we will show that our ideas also have implications for real-time monitoring of data streams, allowing us to handle much faster arrival rates and/or use cheaper and lower powered devices than are currently possible.

Most time series data mining algorithms use similarity search as a core subroutine, and thus the time taken for similarity search is the bottleneck for virtually all time series data mining algorithms. The difficulty of scaling search to large datasets largely explains why most academic work on time series data mining has plateaued at considering a few millions of time series objects, while much of industry and science sits on billions of time series objects waiting to be explored. In this work we show that by using a combination of four novel ideas we can search and mine truly massive time series for the first time. We demonstrate the following extremely unintuitive fact; in large datasets we can exactly search under DTW much more quickly than the current state-of-the-art Euclidean distance search algorithms. RESUMO

Three bacterial strains have been isolated from soil in which soybean had been continuously cropped and treated with Opera(®), a fungicide containing epoxyconazole and pyraclostrobin. The three strains (1,805, 2,801 and 3,803), obtained from soil at 80-100 cm depth, were selected on medium containing 0.03% Opera(®). Morphological examination revealed that the strains were Gram-negative, and two of them (1,805 and 2,801) exhibited polymorphism. The growth profiles demonstrated that 1,805 and 3,803 were more efficient growing in the presence of Opera(®) than 2,801. Maximum growth was reached between 24 and 48 h, however, 2,801 was not able to survive after this period. The total protein content produced by 1,805, 2,801 and 3,803 in liquid selective medium containing Opera(®) were 111.0 ± 0.02, 80.0 ± 0.05 and 130.5 ± 0.07 µg/ml, respectively. According to its biochemical and molecular features, strain 1,805 was identified as Klebsiella sp. On the basis of the characteristics presented (facultative anaerobic nature, polymorphic character and capacity of growing in the presence of Opera(®)) strain 1,805 seems to be able to degrade the epoxyconazole and pyraclostrobin.
