RESUMO

Auger decay carries valuable information about the electronic structure and dynamics of atoms, molecules, and solids. Here we furnish evidence that under certain conditions Auger electrons are subject to an energetic chirp. The effect is disclosed in time-resolved streaking experiments on the Xe NOO and Kr MNN Auger decay using extreme-ultraviolet pulses from the free-electron laser in Hamburg as well as from a high-order harmonic laser source. The origin of this effect is found to be an exchange of energy between the Auger electron and an earlier emitted correlated photoelectron. The observed time-dependent spectral modulations are understood within an analytical model and confirmed by extensive computer simulations.

RESUMO

Parameter-dependent statistical properties of the spectra of ray-splitting billiards are studied experimentally and theoretically. The autocorrelation functions c(x) and c(omega,x) of level velocities as well as the generalized conductance C(0) are calculated for two different classically chaotic ray-splitting billiards. Experimentally a modified Sinai ray-splitting billiard is studied consisting of a thin microwave rectangular cavity with two quarter-circle-shaped Teflon inserts. The length of the cavity serves as the experimentally adjustable parameter. For the theoretical estimates of the parametric correlations we compute the quantum spectrum of a scaling triangular ray-splitting billiard. Our experimental and numerical results are compared with each other and with the predictions of random matrix theory.

RESUMO

We study experimentally and theoretically the autocorrelation function of level velocities c(x) and the generalized conductance C(0) for classically chaotic ray-splitting systems. Experimentally, a Sinai ray-splitting billiard was simulated by a thin microwave rectangular cavity with a quarter-circle Teflon insert. For the theoretical estimates of the autocorrelator c(x) and the conductance C(0) we made parameter-dependent quantum calculations of eigenenergies of an annular ray-splitting billiard. Our experimental and numerical results are compared to theoretical predictions of systems based on the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble in random matrix theory.

RESUMO

A random group of multiple traumatized patients (n = 50) was compared from the aspects of physical rehabilitation and social reintegration with a group of multiple traumatized patients (n = 54) all of whom had serial fracture of the lower extremity. In both groups automobile accidents were the main reason for the injury (in 62%). Motorcycle accidents were responsible in 29% of cases but resulted in twice as many extremity injuries as car accidents, in addition to which the treatment of patients with serial extremity injury lasted twice as long as that of those patients with only single extremity injury. In 40% of the first group more than two secondary hospital treatments were necessary. Two years after trauma working capacity was reduced by less than 20% in only 28.8% of patients with serial injuries as against 69.2% in the randomized group. Reduction of working capacity by more than 80% was observed in only 9% of patients in both groups. In these cases reduction of working capacity was mainly due to severe head injuries and not to limb fractures. Return to work was achieved only after retraining in most such cases, while in others a transfer within the same company made it possible. When patients were asked for their own opinions on the final results of treatment, 75% said they were satisfied. Our results underscore the importance of reestablishing normal function and of reintegration after extremity injuries but also the problems involved.

RESUMO

In this randomized study we attempt to verify treatment results, rehabilitation and social reintegration of multiple trauma patients. Two to 4 years after the accident a clinical follow-up examination was carried out on 104 multiple trauma patients with an average age of 29.5 years who had 7.7 single injuries. Patients with injuries of the central nervous system still showed neurological disorders in 32%. The initially determined Glasgow Coma Scale did not correlate with the long-term prognosis of neurological disorders. Only 4 of 38 thoracic injuries had functional disorders-these patients had required long-term ventilation therapy (> 3 weeks). Former abdominal injuries showed no objective disorders in the follow-up. Most of the injuries to the extremities (79.7%) healed without functional disorder. Only patients with lower limb injuries still had complaints. At the time of the checkup 6.7% had still not been able to work (for more than 24 months) and 26.9% for more than 12 months. The disability rate was less than 20% in 64.3%, 7.2% more than 50% and 9.6% more than 80%. Most of these patients had severe head injuries. There was a relationship between reintegration at work and the age of the patients: 49.2% of patients younger than 25 years were working in their previous profession, 26.9% had here re-educated, and only 7.9% were unemployed. However, in the age group older than 25 years, only 29.2% worked in their previous profession and 12.2% had been re-educated. This follow-up study shows that in multiple trauma patients reintegration at work and in social life is possible.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMO

A project designed to pilot voluntary screening for HIV antibody and hepatitis B virus antigen (HBsAg) in women using Los Angeles County Department of Health Services prenatal clinics is described. The purpose of the study was to demonstrate that HIV testing could be integrated into an existing prenatal health care system with minimal disruption. In an 8-month period, 9,069 women entered the project; 76% accepted HIV antibody testing. The rate of HIV antibody seropositivity was 144 per 100,000 (10 per 6,943), and the rate of HBsAg seropositivity was 253 per 100,000 (23 per 9,103). No difference in test acceptance rates was found using a sign-off versus a sign-on HIV antibody consent form although potential confounders were not controlled. Only five of the eight HIV antibody-positive women (63%) and eight of the 20 HBsAg-positive women (40%) who were interviewed reported behaviors considered high risk for HIV or HBsAg infection.

RESUMO

This part includes the account of Anonchotaenia globata (LINSTOW, 1879) and its embryo, and of Mathevotaenia ornithis sp. nov.--Anonchotaenia globata is know to be a parasite of Passer domesticus in foreign countries. The writers record it for the first time in India in this bird. This species is also known from other birds, but not so far recorded even in other birds in India. VOGE and DAVIS (1953), METTRICK (1958) and MAHON (1958) previously studied this species. The present study contributes additional data to the morphology of this species. Variations in the number of testes, extent of cirrus sac, and position of genital pore have been recorded. A definite neck has been found. Calcareous corpuscles, occurrence of which is not on record in this species, have been found in the present material. Paruterine organ, to which previous workers paid scant attention, has been studied in detail. It is a complex three-layered structure. Eggs undergo development upto the formation of embryos while they are still in the uterus, and subsequently they all pass into the paruterine organ which is found teeming with embryonated eggs. Eggs are quite characteristic in shape. Two coverings are found around the embryos: the outer one, the shell capsule, is spindle-shaped and cornuted; the hexacanth enclosed in a membrane is housed in the dilated middle part of the shell capsule. Hexacanth is an elongated structure with a dilated middle part and not a uniform width. Hence the term "nematodiform" embryo used for it is rather inappropriate. Three pairs of hooks are present in the dilated middle part of the embryo. WOODLAND (1929) and METTRICK (1958) denied the existence of the hooks.--Mathevotaenia ornithis sp. nov. is the first species of the genus Mathevotaenia AKHUMIAN, 1946 that has been described from an avian host, other species are known from mammalian hosts. Amongst the mammalian species, the present form comes close to Mathevotaenia deserti (MILLEMANN, 1955) and M. hardoiensis JOHRI, 1961, but differs from either in several features. This species is chiefly characterized by the number and distribution of testes, bilobed ovary, genital ducts passing between the excretory canals, vitellarium V-shaped, and cirrus sac extending aporally beyond the excretory canals. Besides, the bearing of the receptaculum seminis on the taxonomy of the genera Mathevotaenia AKHMUIAN, 1946 and Atriotaenia SANDGROUND, 1926 has been discussed, and an amendment in the generic delineation has been suggested for these genera.--Systematic position of Mathevotaenia antrozoi (VOGE, 1954) YAMAGUTI, 1959 has been discussed and the species has been assigned to Atriotaenia.
