RESUMO

In a group of 520 patients with injury to the spine and spinal cord 125 died within 10 years. The highest fatality rate (76.0 +/0 3.8) is recorded in the first year after the injury. In the following 10 years the fatality rate was uniform and ranged between 1.6 and 4.1%. This value increases with the patient's age, the severity of the spinal cord injury, and the degree of damage to the spinal ligamento-bursal apparatus. Among the total number of injured, 76% have a survival period of more than 10 years.

RESUMO

Study of neutrophil phagocytic activity in injuries to the spinal cord and spine and in damage to the spine without involvement of the spinal cord showed that injuries to the spinal cord have no specific effect on this activity. True, the phagocytic reaction is inhibited in the first 2-3 weeks after the trauma both in patients with injury to the spinal cord and spine and in those with injury only to the spine. In later periods after the trauma, however, with the neurological status remaining the same, the values of the phagocytic reaction do not differ from those in healthy persons. The level at which the spinal cord is injured hardly affects the activity of phagocytosis. The examination was conducted in 117 patients with spinal fractures 94 of whom had also sustained injury to the spinal cord.

RESUMO

The results of the analysis of 128 patients who had died after trauma of the spine and spinal cord are discussed. Total disturbance of the anatomical intactness of the vertebral canal walls was demonstrated on all specimens. In 85% of patients there were fractures with or without displacement of the injured vertebra; 15% of patients had suffered injury only to the ligamentous-capsular apparatus, the disk included, with no displacement--dislocation of the vertebra. The shape of the vertebral canal was distorted only in cases with displacement of the vertebra. The area of the canal was reduced to almost half the size demonstrated on the radiograms.
