Study of risk factors for the presence of interdigital nevi of the feet. / Estudio de los factores de riesgo de la presencia de los nevus interdigitales de los pies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: No studies focused on counting the interdigital acquired melanocytic nevi (AMN) of the foot (IDNf) have ever been conducted. Therefore, our objective was to study the relationship between the presence of IDNf and the total number of AMN in the feet and the rest of the body, the racial phenotypic characteristics, and other risk factors for melanoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional observational study with 255 patients ≥18 years old who attended our Dermatology Unit from September 2020 through February 2021, and included all AMN ≥ 1 mm from the feet and ≥ 2 mm from the rest of the bod. The association between the variables was studied using univariate and multivariate logistic regression models. RESULTS: The presence of IDNf was significantly and independently associated with the presence of plantar AMN and body counts ≥ 50 AMN. However, no significant differences were observed regarding sex, age, personal history of melanoma, presence of nevi on the dorsum of the foot, history of sunburn or UV rays, or racial phenotypic characteristics. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of IDNf is associated with a higher count of plantar nevi and total AMN in the body, meaning that interdigital spaces of the foot-anatomical expansions of the sole and other possibly genetic causes-could be responsible for the number of AMN found in this location, as these regions are not photoexposed.

Initial evaluation of PetPace activity monitor.

Mobility is considered a vital component of health and quality of life in humans and companion animals. Wearable devices for pets that can monitor activity and other aspects of health are increasingly being marketed to veterinarians and owners, with claims around their ability to monitor aspects of health. However, there is little scientific evidence to support the validity of these claims. To address this, the objective of this study was to assess the correlation of the activity measurement from the PetPace device compared to activity output from Actigraph and the validated Actical device. Ten client-owned, healthy dogs were used for the study. The three devices were mounted simultaneously on a dedicated collar and activity was recorded during a period of 7 days. There were moderate correlations between the Actical and the PetPace (r2=0.59, P=<0.001). There was high correlation between the PetPace and the Actigraph (r2=0.85, P=<0.001) and between the Actical and the Actigraph (r2=0.72, P=<0.001). If the Actical activity counts were limited under 50,000 per hour, there was strong correlation between the Actical and the PetPace (r2=0.71, P=<0.001) and between the Actical and the Actigraph (r2=0.86, P=<0.001). PetPace has a moderate correlation with the most validated activity monitor that has been used in veterinary medicine. Its real-time data acquisition, user friendly interface for owners and cost make this device an attractive tool for monitoring activity in dogs. Further studies maybe needed to evaluate its performance, validity and clinical utility in the field.

A fistula is an abnormal communication between two epithelial surfaces. Although fistulas that wrap around the uterus are not infrequent, uterocutaneous fistula is rare. Effects of frozen storage on the recovery of clenbuterol from urine samples for official control.

The effects of storage under frozen conditions on clenbuterol recovery from spiked calf urine samples were studied. Urine samples contaminated with 10 micro g l(-1) clenbuterol and frozen at -15 degrees C were analysed every 15 days over 6 months. A single frozen contaminated urine sample was also thawed every 15 days over 3 months for the analysis of 10-ml aliquots, after which the remaining portion was frozen again (-15 degrees C). The presence of clenbuterol was determined by GC-MS. A gradual decline in clenbuterol recovery was observed from the first to the 180th day. It was only possible to recover 1.74 +/- 0.06 micro g l(-1) (17%) clenbuterol on the 180th day in samples stored at -15 degrees C. Likewise, clenbuterol totally disappeared from spiked urine samples that had been successively frozen and thawed over 3 months. The results were confirmed in a study performed on 2704 calf urine samples collected on farms and analysed by HPTLC and GC-MS. Of 73 positive samples, 61 had been frozen for <10 days.
