The authors tested a new biological model for the quantitative determination of the anabolic effect of steranobols of prolonged action. The principle of the method consists in creation of an isolated overload of the skeletal muscles of the shin (m. soleus and. m. plantaris) following section of the tendons of their synergist--m. gastrocnemius in rats, with the subsequent recording their weight gain caused by the administration of anabolic steroid. The method is simple, sensitive and permits to use the animals of different weight and sex without subjecting them to castration.

Administration of thyrocalcitonine (TCT) in doses of 0.1 and 1 Un/kg for 14 days prevented the development of myocarditis in rats receiving epinephrine (3 mg/kg) for 4 days reduced the death rate among the animals, increased their body weight and normalized the electrolytes composition in the heart. Given in a dose of 10 Un/kg the drug produced a less pronounced positive effect on the study values in the animals with experimentally-produced epinephrine lesion of the heart. According to the authors this may be occasioned by an intensified secretion of the parathyroid hormone in response to a multiple introduction of large TCT doses to the animals.

The state of the muscle cells of the heart was studied experimentally in 36 albino rats the next day after a single administration of adrenaline hydrochloride (3mg/kg), intramuscularly into the hip. Areas of overcontraction and overextension of myofibrills, numerous myelin-like figures not infrequently containing mitochondria and glycogen, drops of lipids were observed by electron microscopy. It is suggested that the affecting action of adrenaline is expressed through the activation of lipolysis which results in dissociation of the protein-lipid components of the mitochondrial membranes, accumulation of fatty acids in the cytoplasm and resynthesis of the new unusual membranous formations.
