RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To determine if populations at high risk are receptive to tailored, multimedia interventions as a means of promoting adoption of health-protective behaviors related to STD prevention and control. METHODS: Study participants (N = 41) were exposed to the tailored, multimedia intervention and asked for feedback. RESULTS: Participants were able to interact independently with the intervention. A majority found it engaging and indicated that their interaction with the intervention would change their future behavior. CONCLUSION: An urban, primarily African American sample of STD clinic patients was receptive to this tailored, multimedia intervention.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: A community and faith-based intervention with elderly persons and their adult children involving religious, medical, and academic communities is described. DESIGN AND METHODS: Lifestyle changes and individual and corporate forms of spirituality were affirmed using an expanded Rowe and Kahn model of successful aging. Faculty from academic, medical, state, and religious institutions presented a variety of workshops at a multichurch-sponsored conference that hosted over 500 seniors. RESULTS: Postconference surveys suggested extremely favorable satisfaction rates across all groups represented. The African American religious community provided critical leadership in achieving an excellent African American participation rate. IMPLICATIONS: The model described has the capacity to generate collaborations across denominational, racial, and class barriers, and has the potential of helping to unify the religious community around the important task of promoting successful aging.

RESUMO

The association between depressed mood and condom use was examined among incarcerated male adolescents. One hundred and eighty male adolescents who were detained in Birmingham, Alabama in the United States were interviewed during a period of incarceration. Contrary to patterns generally found in adult samples, nearly 50% of this adolescent sample that did not use condoms regularly actually recognized the advantages of condom use. This behavior pattern was deemed "inconsistent," and those engaging in this "inconsistent" behavior pattern were found to have a higher score of depressed mood compared to participants with a "consistent" behavior pattern. As a result, a relationship between depressed mood and decisional balance for condom use within adolescents was evident. These findings suggest that assessment and treatment of depressed mood within this high-risk population could potentially contribute to a reduction in high-risk sexual behaviors.
