RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess the technical success, clinical success and complications after 1 month of percutaneous biliary drainage with the placement of several metallic endoprostheses in complex hilar liver tumours. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study, on a homogenous target population of 68 consecutive patients, who underwent multiple percutaneous biliary drainage for complex hilar tumour (Bismuth type II, III and IV) between August 1998 and August 2010. Patients benefiting from previous endoscopic drainage were excluded from the study. The clinical data, biological data, imaging and interventional radiology procedures were studied. RESULTS: The rate of success of the technique was 98.5% and the clinical rate of success was 84% after 1 week and 93% after 1 month. The rate of minor and major complications was 25 and 13% respectively. CONCLUSION: Multiple percutaneous biliary drainage in complex hilar tumour is a safe and effective first intention procedure.

RESUMO

In 74 mongrel dogs 0.02 ml air/kg of body weight was injected into the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD). Forty-three dogs were studied without (group I) and 31 with (group II) extracorporeal circulation (ECC). Time course and extent of myocardial ischemia were assessed by continous thermographic measurements as well as by fluorescence techniques. Coronary air embolism resulted in an immediate decrease of myocardial temperature associated with transmural ischemia. In 31 surviving dogs (72%) of group I this phenomenon was fully reversible within 8.7 minutes as compared with 5.4 minutes in 100% of the surviving dogs from group II. No postembolic death occurred in the group II animals. In group II the postembolic temperature decrease was significantly less than that in group I, and, in addition, the myocardial area involved was significantly smaller. The results indicate that the extent of myocardial ischemia following coronary air embolism and its time course can be well-documented by means of thermocardiography; using extracorporeal circulation survival can be improved and myocardial damage minimized.

RESUMO

Thickness of synovial lining cell layers, cytological appearance of synovial cells, the grade of fibrosis, the distance between subsynovial blood vessels and synovial surface, possible inflammatory infiltrations etc. have been controlled in synovial preparates of 106 mandibular joints. The age dependent fibrosis of the synovial tissue has been demonstrated.
