RESUMO

Electrophoretic deposition was used to produce titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanostructured films on copper substrate in aqueous media for photocatalytic application. Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) with a weight rate from 0 to 15% was added to TiO2 P25 suspension in order to enhance film adhesion. The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, contact angle measurement, nanoindentation, scratch test and photoluminescence. The photocatalytic activity of the films was tested with amido black 10B under UV irradiation. The results indicated that the morphology and the mechanical properties of films depended on the added PVP amount. Scratch test showed that adhesion strength rose with increased PVP amount. The photocatalytic activity indicated that TiO2 film synthesized with 13% PVP had the highest efficiency.

RESUMO

AIMS: We report two-cases of cavernous hemangiomas arising from the epicardium in two women aged respectively 24 and 79 years old. The first patient was symptomatic and presented with palpitations. The second patient was referred after a random discovery at echocardiography. Chest CT and MRI were performed in the two cases and showed a mass located in the pericardial cavity. Coronary CT was necessary in the first case to ascertain the degree of coronary artery involvement. Both of our patients underwent surgical resection under cardiopulmonary bypass with an uneventful postoperative course for the first case. The second one, died postoperatively from pneumonia. CONCLUSION: Cardiac cavernous hemangiomas, although rare and well tolerated require prompt management and surgery at discovery to avoid further complications which may put at risk the patient's life prognosis.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (HALE) is a rare, benign proliferative vascular disorder of unknown etiology which typically presents as tumor-like nodules of the skin or subcutaneous tissue. It concerns mostly young female adults. We report a case of HALE located on the ear auricle diagnosed by biopsy. The outcome was total regression. OBSERVATION: An 81-year-old male patient presented with a lesion of the whole ear auricle. A diagnosis of HALE was confirmed histologically on biopsy. The evolution was marked by spontaneous and complete regression in 2 months. There was no recurrence after 1 year of follow-up. DISCUSSION: The etiology of this disease remains hypothetical. It poses real diagnostic problems with other types of proliferation, but its main differential diagnosis is Kimura disease. Its treatment has not been codified yet. Spontaneous regression is possible and justifies following the patient from 3 to 6 months, before a possible surgery.

RESUMO

Cardiac myxomas are the most common benign tumours of the heart. In spite of their benign nature, these tumours may induce metastasis or recurrences. Their diagnosis is challenging because of the lack of specific signs, and positive diagnosis is based on microscopic findings. We report a case series of 6 patients documented by radiologic and microscopic findings. In addition, one case was unique due to its location in the right atrium. Tumours were detected by trans-oesophageal ultra-sound examination in all cases. They were located in the left atrium in five cases and in the right side in one case. All patients underwent a successful surgical excision with en-bloc removal of the tumour. The outcome was fatal in one patient because of atrial arrhythmia.

RESUMO

Brucella endocarditis is a rare but a serious complication of human brucellosis. We report 3 cases, the diagnostic was suspected by the patient's history of systemic brucellosis in two cases and established by the culture of native valve material in the third. All the patients underwent surgery for non control of the infections, one patient died in immediately postoperative period by acute cardiac failure. For the other patients, there were no early or late mortality and no recurrence after a follow up of respectively 6 and 84 months. The diagnostic of brucella endocarditis needed a very high degree of clinical suspicion, it requires an early management valve replacement is in the majority of cases, followed by adequate and prolonged antibiotic treatment.
