RESUMO

Background: African American women are at greater risk for cervical cancer incidence and mortality than White women. Up to 90% of cervical cancers are caused by human papillomavirus (HPVs) infections. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) co-developed HPV self-test kits to increase access to screening, which may be critical for underserved populations. Purpose/Research Design: This mixed methods study used the Theory of Planned Behavior to examine attitudes, barriers, facilitators, and intentions related to receipt of cervical cancer screening and perceptions of HPV self-testing among church-affiliated African American women. Study Sample/Data Collection: Participants (N = 35) aged 25-53 participated in focus groups and completed a survey. Results: Seventy-four percent of participants reported receipt of cervical cancer screening in the past 3 years. Healthcare providers and the church were supportive referents of screening. Past trauma and prioritizing children's healthcare needs were screening barriers. Concerns about HPV self-testing included proper test administration and result accuracy. Conclusions: Strategies to mitigate these concerns (e.g., delivering HPV self-test kits to the health department) are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: Young Black/African American men (YBM) are at greater risk for trauma and related mental health concerns compared to young non-Hispanic White men but are less likely to receive mental health care when needed. The current study used a Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB)-guided framework to qualitatively explore beliefs, norms, and intentions related to seeking mental health screening and linkage to care (LTC) among YBM exposed to trauma. METHOD: Participants (N = 55, Mage = 23 years) were YBM aged 18-30 recruited from urban community settings in Kansas City, MO, between October 2018 and April 2019 for participation in focus groups. RESULTS: Participants discussed lived experiences with trauma and mental health care, plus salient behavioral beliefs-both positive and negative. Key normative referents were significant others and family members, and participants endorsed greater motivation to seek care with their support. Control beliefs ranged from individual and interpersonal facilitators and barriers to more systemic factors (e.g., availability of providers, cost, lack of access, disparities in incarceration). CONCLUSIONS: Tailored interventions are needed to promote engagement in mental health services among YBM, with strategies that recognize cultural contexts and ongoing needs for general well-being. Background and Purpose: While sense of belonging is essential for human motivation, impaired belonging among nurses can impact the care and safety of patients. This article reports the development and psychometric testing of the Sense of Belonging in Nursing School (SBNS) scale to assess nursing students' sense of belonging in three different environments: Clinical, classroom, and among the student cohort. Method: Principal component exploratory factor analysis with varimax rotation was used to determine the construct validity on the 36-item SBNS scale with a sample of 110 undergraduate nursing students. Cronbach's alpha was used to determine the scale's internal consistency. Results: The scale was reduced to 19-items with high internal consistency (α = 0.914). Principal component analysis then identified four factors (sub-scales) with high internal consistency: Clinical staff (α = 0.904), clinical instructor (α = 0.926), classroom (α = 0.902), and classmates/cohort (α = 0.952). Conclusion: The SBNS scale is a reliable and valid tool to measure sense of belonging across three environments among nursing students. Further research is needed to determine the scale's predictive validity.

AIM: This study examined the frequency of incivility for undergraduate nursing students and the relationship between staff nurse incivility and nursing students' sense of belonging. Factors between program semester and students' body mass index (BMI) to staff nurse incivility and students' sense of belonging were assessed. BACKGROUND: Sense of belonging enhances belonging development to the profession. However, no studies address the relationship between incivility and nursing students' sense of belonging. METHODS: A cross-sectional design assessed the relationship between staff nurse incivility and undergraduate nursing students' sense of belonging to the nursing profession. An online survey was administered to 123 pre-licensure junior and senior undergraduate nursing students from February 1, 2021, to May 5, 2021. Correlation coefficient, descriptive statistics, Fisher r-to-z transformation, 95% confidence intervals were calculated. RESULTS: Staff nurse incivility inversely correlated with undergraduate nursing students' sense of belonging (rs=-.358; p <.001). American Indian or Alaskan Native students reported the highest mean frequency of incivility (1.25 ± .421). There were no significant differences in correlations based on semester or BMI. CONCLUSION: Staff nurse incivility is inversely associated with sense of belonging in students. Further research is needed to test interventions mitigating the effects of incivility on belonging.

Use of Motivational Interviewing (MI), a patient centered counseling strategy in the health professions, has demonstrated efficacy. Given the varied training associated with the delivery of health interventions, it is essential adherence and competence are equivocally assured. Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) coding evaluated our recorded standardized patient oral assessment and planning sessions to identify the skills in which MI-trained students (n = 26) performed compared to student counterparts (n = 24) not trained in the MI curriculum. The full integration of MI in those receiving the MI curriculum resulted in the dental hygiene students with higher ratings for all global ratings, behavioral counts, and summary scores. MI-trained mean scores for evocation, collaboration, autonomy support, empathy, and direction ranged from 4.16(±0.43) to 3.85 (±0.67). All students receiving MI training reached competence in all 5 of the referenced MITI global variables: evocation, collaboration, autonomy support, empathy, and direction. The most substantial improvements for MITI behavioral and summary variables were in Giving Information, MI Adherence, and proportion of Open-Ended Questions. Complex Reflections, and subsequently Ratios of Complex Reflections to Open-Ended Questions were notably below proficiency in the MI group. Knowing which elements were adhered to well and which were lacking helps inform student MI learning outcomes. Results inform the design of MI training curricula to address areas of weakness and maximize performance across all MI fidelity domains.
