RESUMO

Non-natural terpenoids offer potential as pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. However, their chemical syntheses are often long, complex, and not easily amenable to large-scale production. Herein, we report a modular chemoenzymatic approach to synthesize terpene analogues from diphosphorylated precursors produced in quantitative yields. Through the addition of prenyl transferases, farnesyl diphosphates, (2E,6E)-FDP and (2Z,6Z)-FDP, were isolated in greater than 80 % yields. The synthesis of 14,15-dimethyl-FDP, 12-methyl-FDP, 12-hydroxy-FDP, homo-FDP, and 15-methyl-FDP was also achieved. These modified diphosphates were used with terpene synthases to produce the unnatural sesquiterpenoid semiochemicals (S)-14,15-dimethylgermacrene D and (S)-12-methylgermacrene D as well as dihydroartemisinic aldehyde. This approach is applicable to the synthesis of many non-natural terpenoids, offering a scalable route free from repeated chain extensions and capricious chemical phosphorylation reactions.

RESUMO

Intimate partner violence (IPV) predicts poor health for victims and their children, but little is known about the perspective of victims. This study reports the perspectives of adult female IPV victims about the impact of IPV on their health and barriers of health care access for themselves and their children. The majority rated their health as good to excellent (69%). However, 83.5% indicated that IPV negatively affected their health; 53.5% had unmet health care needs. Mental health care was the most common unmet need for women; children's unmet needs were immunizations and preventive care. Transportation difficulties posed the biggest barrier to health care access.

RESUMO

An emerging field of research is beginning to examine the ways in which socioeconomic disparities affect emotional, cognitive, and social processes. In this study, we took a two-step approach to examining the role that resource scarcity plays in the predictive power of intrinsic motivation on school attendance, as well as its influence on the precursors of intrinsic motivation: the psychological needs of relatedness, autonomy, and competence. Results revealed that intrinsic motivation predicts school attendance even under conditions of extreme adversity. The satisfaction of the basic needs is more important for participants who are exposed to severe rather than mild levels of deprivation. Our findings illustrate ecological effects on the mechanism underlying goal-directed behavior. They provide evidence in favor of self-determination theory's depiction of humans as active, growth-oriented organisms and for the potential of psychological interventions to reduce poverty.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Respiratory infections are associated with clinically significant illness in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). The 2009 H1N1 pandemic was perceived as a significant threat to this population. METHODS: We undertook a chart review of all patients with SCD followed at our institution to identify those with confirmed H1N1 infection. Further chart and laboratory data was collected on affected patients to analyze clinical courses and the factors that correlated with disease severity. RESULTS: Approximately half of the patients with confirmed H1N1 infection were managed successfully on an outpatient basis with oseltamivir therapy. Among the patients admitted, the most common diagnosis was acute chest syndrome (ACS). Most admitted patients had uncomplicated clinical courses, with a median length of admission of 3 days and no mortality or requirement for mechanical ventilation. A past history of ACS or reactive airway disease correlated with a higher rate of admission and of ACS incidence during the acute illness. Chronic transfusion therapy or hydroxyurea therapy with high hemoglobin F levels had a strong inverse correlation with incidence of ACS. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that that in general the impact of the H1N1 influenza pandemic on patients with SCD was mild but that past clinical history correlated with the severity of illness. Additionally, effective hydroxyurea therapy and chronic transfusion therapy appeared to be protective against the incidence of ACS. Our results suggest guidelines for the management of patients with SCD during future influenza pandemics as well as during seasonal influenza epidemics.

RESUMO

Theories of moral judgment have long emphasized reasoning and conscious thought while downplaying the role of intuitive and contextual influences. However, recent research has demonstrated that incidental feelings of disgust can influence moral judgments and make them more severe. This study involved two experiments demonstrating that the reverse effect can occur when the notion of physical purity is made salient, thus making moral judgments less severe. After having the cognitive concept of cleanliness activated (Experiment 1) or after physically cleansing themselves after experiencing disgust (Experiment 2), participants found certain moral actions to be less wrong than did participants who had not been exposed to a cleanliness manipulation. The findings support the idea that moral judgment can be driven by intuitive processes, rather than deliberate reasoning. One of those intuitions appears to be physical purity, because it has a strong connection to moral purity.

RESUMO

Examined the validity of the Guide to the Assessment of Test Session behavior (GATSB) in a clinical sample. The GATSB is a structured and standardized measure that was normed on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-III) standardization sample. The purpose of this study was to extend validity research on the GATSB to cognitive measures other than the WISC-III and to parent-reported child behavior problems. Test observations were taken for 122 children ages 6 to 16 years who were referred to an outpatient psychology clinic for psychoeducational evaluations. GATSB scores demonstrated a moderate relation with general indexes from the WISC-III, the Woodcock-Johnson Psychoeducational Battery-Revised (WJ-R), and the Wide Range Assessment of Memory and Learning (WRAML), but displayed low magnitude correlations with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). These results expand existing data supporting the validity of the GATSB and suggest that it may be fruitfully adopted into a clinic setting.
