RESUMO

The author reviews data about masters of obstetrics, physicians and surgeons nonphysicians, who worked in Vojvodina from the second half of the 18th till the beginning of the 20th century. They used to be the professional and time bridge as well as extremely important developmental link of continuity between the obstetrics of untrained and subsequently educated midwives and physicians gyneco--surgeons, later specialists gynecologists--obstetricians all as a part of integral discipline of gynecology and obstetrics in the area of Vojvodina. The existence of about 30 masters of obstetrics in the area of today's Vojvodina from the 18th to the 20th century, educated at medical faculties of Vienna, Budapest and Graz, points to the fact that obstetrics and gynecology in our regions in the 18th and especially 19th and 20th centuries, used to have similar, and somewhere identical trends and directions of development, like the obstetrics and gynecology of Central Europe of that time and that it used to be, just like it is today, a part of European gynecology and obstetrics.

RESUMO

The author presents his own observations and reflections about the problems which appear with primary and secondary selection and election, in other words, with the selection, election and reelection of candidates, meaning personnel for scientific-research work at institutes and clinics of medical faculties in our country. He is in favor of the introduction of unique, agreed on, scientific and professional criteria, and with that, their strict obeying, without the influence of para-scientific factors, with the elimination of the attempts of such negative occurrences and attempted activities. In the process of secondary selection (reelection) the author recommends the strict obedience of principles of expertly proven scientific and professional qualities of the candidate, with giving priority and propulsive direction to the young, contemporarily educated and efficient workers in scientific research, and the principled elimination from institutes and clinics of such people which have not, up to now, actually proven themselves in the scientific and professional field. With this, broad spaces open for the constant selection of new young personnel and the removal of the insufficiently qualified "plethora" which blocks the further development and efficient work of scientific-research institutions at medical faculties.

RESUMO

The authors present 18 cases of the Allen-Masters syndrome diagnosed from 1978 to 1985. The pelvic peritoneal defect was diagnosed by laparoscopy in 15 cases, by laparotomy in 3 cases. There was some doubt about the presence of the syndrome in 4 cases. The syndrome was diagnosed by chance in 11 cases while investigating causes of sterility. The locations of peritoneal laceration were distributed between broad ligaments in 13 cases and the other areas of the Douglas pouch in 5 cases. In 3 cases there were no previous gynaecological and obstetrical traumas that might explain the cause of the presence of the syndrome. The treatment was surgical in 5 cases, i.e. the sutural of the ligament-peritoneal scarred laceration.

RESUMO

A follow-up was conducted on uterine haemorrhage in all female newborn infants at the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics in Novi Sad, in the period from 1 January to 31 December 1979. Of the total of 2477 newborn female infants, 2241 (90.47%) were at-term infants of which 85 (3.79%) had uterine haemorrhage, 126 (5.09%) premature infants of which 1 (0.793) had uterine haemorrhage and 110 (4.443) postmature infants of which 10 (9.09%) had uterine haemorrhage. General frequency of uterine haemorrhage was 3.87%.

RESUMO

PIP: The Christian Orthodox Church has 100-150 million baptized members worldwide. Its official position on fertility regulation is little known among nontheologians. The Christian Orthodox Church is resolutely opposed to all attempts to permit induced abortion, and has been since its earliest history. In the 4th century the aborting woman was considered in the same category as a murderer, and the position was reiterated through the centuries in the canons of the Church. However, the common practice of Church members differed greatly from the official position. During the Roman period and the 1st years of the Christian era, abortion and the exposure of newborns were very common. Many of the earlier arguments in favor of abortion that were countered by the Church are still offered. The liberalization of abortion legislation in the US was opposed by American Christian Orthodox Church members. The Church's position on contraception is less well known than its stand on abortion. Several official publications have condemned family planning, regarding it as a form of prostitution within the family and as a sin. The official position of the Greek Orthodox Church was set forth in an encyclical written in 1937, which recommended abstinence as the only legal method of avoiding conception. The position of the Christian Orthodox Church on abortion and contraception is fundamentally identical to that of the Roman Catholic Church. Because the position of the Christian Orthodox Church on birth control, which has been fixed for centuries, has not been officially debated and has not been communicated to the members, it has not fully guided daily life. One might suppose that members of the Christian Orthodox Church are freer of church control of their fertility behavior than are Catholics.^ieng

RESUMO

The author presents data on the first women obstetricians and gynecologists in the Yugoslav countries. Their work started in Belgrade in the last decade of the 19th century (Dr Eva Haljecka in 1892 and Dr Ljubica Godevac-Duric in 1896). The life, work, and other biographical data concerning Dr E. Haljecka (1869-1947) are given in more detail. She was the first woman obstetrician-gynecologist not only in Belgrade, Nis and the whole of Serbia but also in all Yugoslav countries. In 1920 she became the first head of the Gynecologico-Obstetric Department of the Nis Hospital, where she had worked since 1910. Before the First World War Dr E. Haljecka distinguished herself as a prominent fighter for the social and other rights and equality of women physicians in the then Kingdom of Serbia.
