RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Dementia is a chronic, degenerative disease with a strong impact on families and health systems. The instruments currently in use for measuring cognitive impairment have different psychometric characteristics in terms of application time, cut-off point, reliability, and validity. The objective of this review is to describe the characteristics of the validated, Spanish-language versions of the Mini-Cog, Clock-Drawing Test, and Mini-Mental State Examination scales for cognitive impairment screening. DEVELOPMENT: We performed a three-stage literature search of articles published on Medline since 1953. We selected articles on validated, Spanish-language versions of the scales that included data on reliability, validity, sensitivity, and specificity. CONCLUSIONS: The 3 screening tools assessed in this article provide support for primary care professionals. Timely identification of mild cognitive impairment and dementia is crucial for the prognosis of these patients.

(AU)

RESUMO

ß-aminoisobutyric acid (BAIBA) has been studied in isolation conditions: in the gas phase and trapped into a cryogenic N2 matrix. A solid sample of the compound was vaporized by laser ablation and investigated through their rotational spectra in a supersonic expansion using two different spectroscopic techniques: broadband chirped pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy and conventional molecular beam Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. Four conformers with structures of two types could be successfully identified by comparison of the experimental rotational and (14)N nuclear quadruple coupling constants with those predicted theoretically: type A, bearing an OH⋯N intramolecular hydrogen bond and its carboxylic group in the trans geometry (H-O-C=O dihedral ∼180°), and type B, having an NH⋯O bond and the cis arrangement of the carboxylic group. These two types of conformers could also be trapped from the gas phase into a cryogenic N2 matrix and probed by Fourier transform infrared (IR) spectroscopy. In situ irradiation of BAIBA isolated in N2 matrix of type B conformers using near-IR radiation tuned at the frequency of the O-H stretching 1st overtone (∼6930 cm(-1)) of these forms allowed to selectively convert them into type A conformers and into a new type of conformers of higher energy (type D) bearing an NH⋯O=C bond and a O-H "free" trans carboxylic group.

RESUMO

There is an evident epidemiological association between plasma insulin levels and blood pressure. The mechanism that relates insulin to blood pressure and the role of insulin in the pathogenesis of arterial hypertension have not been clearly defined. The present study was designed to examine the effects of chronic hyperinsulinism on blood pressure and to determine different related morphological variables. WistarKyoto rats were subcutaneously injected with insulin (25 UI/Kg of weight) daily during the eight weeks of the experiment. Data were collected on systolic and diastolic arterial pressures and heart rate by plethysmography and direct recording (in the last week), and on morphological variables. A statistically significant elevation of systolic arterial pressure was produced after the sixth week of hyperinsulinaemia. At the end of the treatment, the systolic arterial pressure was 173.7 +/- 26.1 in the hyperinsulinaemic rats versus 153.09 +/- 21.7 in the control group. The values obtained by direct recording and by plethysmography did not differ. These results indicate that chronic hyperinsulinism produces a significant elevation in systolic blood pressure levels in the rats studied.

RESUMO

Erythrocyte membranes drawn from diabetic patients with poor metabolic control have increased protein glycosylation and decreased Ca2(+)-ATPase activity. A significant relationship was found between these two parameters. Similar results were obtained when protein glycosylation and Ca2(+)-ATPase activity were measured in membranes from normal erythrocytes preincubated with glucose. In this condition, both parameters showed a clear time and dose dependence. Incubation of erythrocyte membranes instead of intact erythrocytes with glucose and glucose-6-phosphate strongly suggests that only the glycosylation of the membrane inner-surface proteins can affect Ca2(+)-ATPase activity. The simultaneous presence of 10 mM glucose and 5 mM ATP in the incubation medium did not affect the degree of erythrocyte membrane protein glycosylation but significantly blocked the inhibitory effect of glucose on Ca2(+)-ATPase activity. However, 5 mM ATP only partially blocked the inhibitory effect of 100 mM glucose, suggesting a competitive mechanism of glucose and ATP for the enzyme active site. Our results show that glycosylation of erythrocyte membrane proteins significantly inhibits Ca2(+)-ATPase activity. This effect could contribute to the development of the capillary closure process observed in diabetic patients. Furthermore, it could represent an index of a general impairment of enzyme function arising in cells chronically exposed to high glucose levels.

RESUMO

This study deals with the development of a method to identify typical food dishes, successfully applied in the State of Sonora, Mexico. The State was divided into six regions considering the size of the territory and existence of different physical, economic and sociocultural conditions, and how they influence the consumption patterns. A list of 66 regional food dishes was prepared by interviewing housewives from different parts of Sonora who now lived in the city of Hermosillo. From this list, 47 dishes were identified as regionally consumed, and a State-wide survey was performed to determine their frequency of consumption. Based on the categories of "very frequently", "frequently" and "less frequently", a group of 15 dishes (2 per region, plus 3 dishes throughout the State) was selected. A questionnaire was used to obtain the different ways they had of preparing them. The "typical recipe" for each dish was also determined, using the mode as statistical parameter. Samples of these food dishes were prepared at the laboratory following the selected home recipes for proximal analysis and determination of their vitamin A, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, calcium, phosphorus and iron content. The results showed that a portion of "gallina pinta" contributed more than 25% of the daily recommended intake established by the National Institute of Nutrition "Salvador Zubirán" (INNSZ) for an adult man for energy, protein, iron, niacin and 24.3% thiamine and 21.0% calcium. The "chivichangas de queso", for example, contributed 45.2% of the calcium requirement, and the "tamales de carne", 36% iron.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
