RESUMO

Flying qubits encode quantum information in propagating modes instead of stationary discrete states. Although photonic flying qubits are available, the weak interaction between photons limits the efficiency of conditional quantum gates. Conversely, electronic flying qubits can use Coulomb interactions, but the weaker quantum coherence in conventional semiconductors has hindered their realization. In this work, we engineered on-demand injection of a single electronic flying qubit state and its manipulation over the Bloch sphere. The flying qubit is a Leviton propagating in quantum Hall edge channels of a high-mobility graphene monolayer. Although single-shot qubit readout and two-qubit operations are still needed for a viable manipulation of flying qubits, the coherent manipulation of an itinerant electronic state at the single-electron level presents a highly promising alternative to conventional qubits.

RESUMO

A 52-year-old man was admitted to the hospital following the development of an inoculation eschar and fever six days after being bitten by a tick. He was clinically diagnosed as suffering from rickettsiosis. Eschar biopsy cultures on standard bacteriological media remained sterile. However, inoculation of cells with the homogenized specimen by the centrifugation-shell vial technique (M. Marrero and D. Raoult, Am. J. Trop. Med. Hyg. 40:197-199, 1989) resulted in the recovery of a bacterium. Determination of the sequence of the 16S rRNA gene amplified from the organism and comparison of the sequence to other sequences identified it as a strain of Francisella tularensis, whereas the specific serology was still negative. Our findings demonstrate that the centrifugation-cell culture, which is a tool for investigation of tick-transmitted diseases, may have the potential to serve as a method for the cultural isolation of F. tularensis.

RESUMO

A factory in France had used technical-grade chloromethyl-methyl-ether in the manufacture of anion exchange resins since 1958. Technical-grade chloromethyl-methyl-ether contains a human lung carcinogen, bis-chloromethyl-ether. The purpose of this cohort study was to determine if workers at the factory whose jobs had involved potential exposure to technical chloromethyl-methyl-ether had a higher incidence of lung cancer than coworkers, or others without potential exposure. Lung cancer occurred at a higher rate among potentially exposed workers than among nonexposed workers at the same plant (rate ratio (RR) = 5.0, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.0-12.3), or among an external reference population (RR = 7.6, 95% CI 4.3-13.5). The average age at diagnosis for exposed cases was 10.5 years lower than for nonexposed cases. The predominantly small-cell cancers of the exposed were mostly oat-cell. There was a positive dose-response relation. The mean time from first exposure to diagnosis was 13 years (95% CI 8-18). Cumulative dose and induction time were not associated. The rate for the exposed workers peaked between 7 and 13 years after the start-up of the chloromethylation process, and was still above background in 1986, the end of the study period.

RESUMO

A case is reported of a bilateral atypical mycobacterial infection, occurring in a 44 year old male with antecedent silicosis. Successful surgical resection was performed after 17 months of failed chemotherapy. The atypical mycobacterium which is unclassified is intermediate between Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare. Mycobacterium terrae complex and Mycobacterium gastri. It has some similarities with the newly described species, Mycobacterium malmöense.
