[Treatment of secondary retinal detachment in von Hippel-Lindau disease]. / Leczenie wtórnego odwarstwienia siatkówki w chorobie Hippla-Lindau'a.

In the last 16 years, 8 patients (9 eyes) with secondary retinal detachment in von Hippel-Lindau disease were treated. The methods of treatment depended on the size and number of vascular tumours and on the extent and type of retinal detachment. The retina was successfully reattached in 4 eyes. In 4 eyes with the total retinal detachment, our treatment was uneffective. One patient is treated till now. The best results were observed when the tumours were small and single and the retinal detachment extended to less than 1 quadrant of the fundus of the eye. The successful therapy is conditioned by the complete destruction of the tumour. The treatment of the large retinal detachment, in spite of using different methods, is very often difficult and unsuccessful.

In the years 1985-1990, 987 patients with retinal detachment were treated in the Ophthalmological Clinic of Medical Academy in Poznan. In 25 patients, from the above group, the coexistence of retinoschisis was observed. The clinical picture of retinal detachment and retinoschisis was the basis for explaining the pathogenesis of two different phenomena: "retinoschisis versus retinal detachment" and "retinal detachment versus retinoschisis". The surgical treatment applied to 25 eyes resulted in 88% retinal attachment.

[Photocoagulation in selected cases of pathology of retinal vessels]. / Fotokoagulacja w wybranych przypadkach patologii naczyn siatkówki.

The authors presented methods and results of treatment by means of an argon laser of 12 patients with pathological changes of the retinal vessels. Diagnosed in these patients were: capillary haemangioma (Hippel-Lindau disease), teleangiectasis and macroaneurysms of the retinal vessels. Photocoagulation by argon laser of these vascular changes in these patients in right time showed to be a favourable therapeutic method, especially when the changes are localized in the posterior pole of the eye.

[Anesthesia in ophthalmology]. / Znieczulenie w okulistyce.

Ophthalmology is a medical specialty in which diagnostical as well as therapeutical proceedings are not possible without exploiting the advantages of anaesthesiology. We are most frequently using the local anaesthesia--surface or infiltrative. In the last years there appeared reports on the application of acupuncture in ophthalmic surgery. Ophthalmological operations are also performed in general anaesthesia. Advantages and disadvantages of particular types of anaesthesia are discussed.
