RESUMO

This article describes the impregnation of copper nanoparticles (CuNP) in a polyester fibre filter that can be used in solid-gas filtration to retain the spread of pathogen microorganisms in indoor environments. The impregnation of the CuNP was achieved by spraying the suspension on the surface of filter media. An acid pretreatment was also evaluated to increase the adhesion between fibre and nanoparticle. The synthesis of the CuNP was done by chemical reduction. The bacterial effect was measured through the contact method for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and we demonstrate that the presence of CuNP to filter media reduced up to 99.99% of gram-negative and 99.98% of gram-positive bacteria. The pretreatment with HCl was a good alternative to filter modification due to the higher adhesion between CuNP and the fibre while the high efficiency against pathogen microorganisms was kept. The modification of filters with CuNP can improve the air quality of indoor environments, vanishing the pathogen microorganisms circulating in the air.

RESUMO

Purpose: The aim of this study was 2-fold: (1) to analyze variations of short-duration maximal jumping performance in players exposed to a match and those who were not and (2) to analyze the relationships between changes in the short-duration maximal jumping performance and different accumulated training load and match demands measures. Methods: Twenty-four professional soccer players (age: 20.3 ± 1.7 years) were monitored daily for their training load and match demands over 6 weeks. In addition, they performed a weekly short-duration maximal jumping performance test (72 h after the last match). Results: Negative moderate correlations were found between percentage of change of countermovement jump (CMJ) height and Acummulated training load (ATL) of total distance (TD), high metabolic load (HML), accelerations (ACC), and decelerations (DEC) (r = -0.38, p = 0.004; r = -0.33, p = 0.013; r = -0.39, p = 0.003; and r = -0.30, p = 0.026). No correlations were found for match load (ML). TD, HML, ACC, and DCC (r = 0.27, r = 0.25, r = 0.31, and r = 0.22, respectively) were used to predict the percentage of change of CMJ height. Conclusion: Match participation has negative effects on CMJ performance. The ATL of HML, ACC, DCC, and TD have a significant influence on both CMJ measures changes. Also, the ATL values of those metrics are the best predictors of the percentage changes of CMJ performance.

RESUMO

Controlling the bioaerosol present in indoor environments has been evidenced to be extremely necessary. An alternative is to develop filter media for air conditioners that have biocidal properties. This study aimed to verify the biocidal effect of a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter medium modified with the deposition of nanoparticles on its surface. For this purpose, Ag, TiO2, and Ag/TiO2 nanoparticles were used and the antimicrobial activities of these nanomaterials against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans microorganisms were evaluated, as well as the biocidal efficacy of the modified HEPA filter with these nanomaterials in a real environment. The percentages of elimination obtained for the Ag, TiO2, and Ag/TiO2 nanomaterials, respectively, were 53%, 63%, and 68% (E. coli); 67%, 67%, and 69% (S. aureus); and 68%, 73%, and 75% (C. albicans). The HEPA filter media had their surfaces modified by aspersion and deposition of Ag, TiO2, and Ag/TiO2 nanomaterials. We could conclude that the nanoparticles adhered to the filter medium do not affect its permeability. The modified filters were arranged in an internal environment (bathroom) for the collection of the bioaerosols, and after the collection, the filter cake was plated and arranged to grow in a liquid medium. The results showed that the filters have 100% of biocidal action in passing air, and 55.6%, 72.2%, and 81% of inhibition to microbial growth in their surface for modification with Ag, TiO2, and Ag/TiO2, respectively, compared to unmodified filters.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT The cultivation of microalgae is a possible destination for vinasse, a residue from the sugar and alcohol industry. This use can help reduce the costs of microalgae production and remediate this residue rich in nutrients. However, the physicochemical characteristics of vinasse limit its use for microalgae growth at low concentrations, except when the residue is pretreated. This work aimed at optimizing the vinasse pretreatments of centrifugation and adsorption by smectite clay and activated charcoal on laboratory scale in terms of amounts of materials used and time spent, making them more viable on larger scales. The optimized processes were then compared in productive, economic, and environmental terms. The dilution of treated vinasse with distilled water resulted in similar growth of Chlorella vulgaris to those obtained with the dilution in BG11 medium, indicating that the addition of nutrients in culture media is not necessary. Although microalgae growth occurs in higher concentrations of vinasse treated by adsorption, the results show that centrifugation required less processing time, has cheaper processing costs, and generated much less residue. Centrifugation treatment has greater economic and environmental viabilities and was more sustainable than the adsorption, even though the algae did not grow in the centrifuged residue in concentrations as high as it did after the adsorption treatment. Therefore, this article brings a new view about the economic and environmental aspects on the use of pretreated vinasse for microalgal growth, giving a lucrative destination for a highly polluting waste.

ABSTRACT The monitoring of indoor air quality (IAQ) is gaining increasing attention on current research. However, there has been less work concerning the development of techniques to mitigate the effects of indoor air pollution. The aim of this study was to modify polyester-viscose (PV) mesh fabrics with silver nanoparticles, in order to use them in air conditioners. To reach this objective, common fabrics purchased from commercial sources were modified by immersion of the chosen filters in nanoparticle suspensions. After drying the filter, collection of particulate matter was made in a higher education institution. The results showed that the filters impregnated with silver nanoparticles were able to significantly reduce the activity of microorganisms present in the airborne particulate matter, by between 22 and 83%.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of uterine artery embolization (UAE) on uterine volume (UV), greater myoma diameter (GMD) and ovarian function three months after the procedure, by transvaginal pelvic ultrasonography (TVPUS) and by the determination of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). METHODS: Thirty patients with leiomyomas were submitted to UAE. TVPUS and FSH determination were performed before and three months after UAE. UV was determined in cm³, GMD in cm and FSH in IU/mL. Data are reported as as mean standard deviation (SD) and were analyzed statistically by the nonparametric Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS: Twenty-nine patients were analyzed. Before UAE, mean UV was 402.4 165.9 cm³ and GMD was 5.9 2.1 cm. After UAE, mean UV was 258.9 118.6 cm³ and GMD was 4.6 1.8 cm. Mean FSH concentration was 4.9 3.5 IU/mL before UAE and 5.5 4.7 IU/mL after UAE, with p=0.5. There was a 35% reduction of UV and a 22% reduction of GMD, with no changes in FSH values after three months. CONCLUSION: The procedure significantly reduced UV and GMD but did not cause a significant increase in FSH levels, thus causing no changes in ovarian function.

PURPOSE: to analyze histomorphometric consequences of the uterine arteries embolization (UAE) in the uterine tissue, especially by collagen tissue quantification through uterine biopsy, before and after treatment of uterine leiomyoma. METHODS: 15 patients with symptomatic leyomioma and/or infertility, submitted to UAE, participated in the study according to the study exclusion criteria, after having signed an informed consent. Uterine biopsy was performed in the secretory phase of the menstrual cycle, before and three months after the procedure, to evaluate the collagen. After the histological processing of the material, 3 µ slices were prepared, some of them dyed with hematoxiline-eosin (HE) and others with the specific dye for collagen fibers (Picrosirius red). Then, the slides were examined and interpreted, and the collagen quantified. The amount was calculated as the percent of the area composed by collagen, and the result expressed in mean±standard deviation (SD). Data has then been submitted to statistical analysis by Student's paired t test (p<0.05). RESULTS: the presence of smooth muscle cells was observed in the biopsies performed before the treatment, surrounded by a rich network of collagen fibers, which are part of the tumor, blood vessels and fibroblast nuclei. On the slides of biopsies performed after the treatment, it was observed the presence of widespread coagulation necrosis, vascular thrombosis, calcification and lymphoplasmocitary infiltration areas and clear reduction of the collagen component. The percentage of collagen fibers was higher in the pre-UAE group (84.07±1.41), than in the post-UAE (81.05±1.50) group, with p<0.0001, and 95 percent confidence interval (CI95 percent) from 2.080 to 3.827. CONCLUSION: the quantitative and qualitative collagen reduction clearly shows that the proposed treatment is efficient in reducing the tumoral mass, composed mainly by collagen fibers intermingled with neoplasic smooth muscle ...
