RESUMO

Neoplasms in the oral cavity are generally recognized during the routine examination of the newborn. Lesions arising on the alveolar processes of the jaws may interfere with nursing and respiration. This paper reviews the congenital epulis (CE) in the newborn. A case of CE arising on the maxillary alveolar process is reported. Due to the indication for removal of these benign tumours in the neonatal period they should be recognized as early as possible.

RESUMO

11 edentulous patients (mean age 71.2 years) with oral or oropharyngeal malignancies were examined clinical and microbiologically before, during, and after receiving tumoricidal radiation doses (26.4-74 Gy) towards the head and neck regions. The effect of a supervised oral hygiene program and a saliva substitute (Va-OraLube) was studied. The 9 patients who survived the observation period, showed increased xerostomia and mucositis related to increased radiation. Radionecrosis or oral infections were not observed. The patients wore their dentures throughout the observation period and preferred to use the saliva substitute. The initial number of acidophilic bacteria was high, Candida albicans were present in low numbers and enteric bacteria occurred more frequently than normally. There was a reduction of micro-organisms after introduction of the hygiene program. It is concluded that careful planning of the radiotherapy, pre-radiation oral examination, denture control and instruction and an effective oral hygiene program are essential for the reduction of oral complications in edentulous patients receiving tumoricidal radiotherapy to the head and neck regions.

RESUMO

The aims of the present study were to demonstrate FcR activity of dental periapical granulomas and to correlate the activity with the degree of lymphoreticular cell infiltration. Cryostat sections of 46 out of 51 granulomas adsorbed sheep erythrocytes(E) sensitized with rabbit IgG antibodies (A) (EA). No adsorption occurred using erythrocytes sensitized with F(ab')2 fragments of IgG. IgG and Fc fragments of human of rabbit IgG inhibited the binding of EA, whereas F(ab')2 fragments, human IgA, IgM or albumin did not, indicating the presence of receptors for the Fc region of IgG. Periodate, neutral formaldehyde and phospholipase C abolished the FcR activity whereas neuraminidase had no effect. Comparison of sections binding EA and adjacent sections stained with haematoxylin and eosin showed that EA adhered to areas infiltrated with mononuclear cells. The degree of binding of EA coincided with the density of mononuclear cell infiltration. Point attachments between the tissue sections and the adsorbed EA could be demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy. Sections with no infiltrates did not bind EA.

RESUMO

The article presents the experiences based on facial ectoprostheses over a period of seven years. The material consists of 23 cases, 12 women and 11 men. In 19 cases the facial defects were caused by a malignant neoplasm, in 2 cases by a chronic infection and in 2 cases as a result of trauma. The age of the patients ranged from 23 to 83 years with a dominance in the sixth and seventh decade. The mean age was 62.9 years. The prosthetic problems and solutions are discussed in detail. The usefulness of the facial ectoprostheses is evaluated to be adequate, both in technologic and biologic respect.

RESUMO

An ameloblastic fibro-odontoma in a 14-year-old girl is reported. The case has clinical interest because of the location and the size of the tumor which was surgically enucleated. The different views about clinical, radiographical and histopathological characteristics and the classification of this benign tumor are discussed. The postoperative course was uneventful and the case has been controlled for 3 years without recurrence.

RESUMO

Two cases of necrotizing sialometaplasia are reported together with a review of the literature. This self-limiting benign lesion is easily confused with malignant tumors. The lesions are characterized histologically by an extensive necrosis of the salivary gland tissue together with squamous metaplasia of the ducts. The present report of two females who had intense pain in the initial phase differs from previous reports concerning age and symptoms. The importance of rather extensive biopsy specimens is stressed. Antibiotic treatment appears to be insignificant. A clinical history of allergy and a dominance of eosinophilic granulocytes in the inflammatory exudate in both cases may indicate an allergic etiology.

RESUMO

The article describes the complicated treatment of a jaw cyst, caused by an infected temporary tooth. The genesis and the clinical characteristics of jaw cysts in young patients, as well as the importance of due time extraction of the strongly ruined temporary teeth is discussed.

RESUMO

A case of an unusual extensive dentigerous cyst of the mandible with ameloblastic formations in the cyst wall is presented. The tumor was totally enucleated in a two-step conservative surgical prosedure over 14 months, whereby the continuity of the mandible was preserved. The patient has been followed for two years. There has been a complete bone regeneration and no recurrence of the tumor. The importance of biopsy of odontogenic cysts associated with mandibular third molars is stressed.

RESUMO

Different implantation materials have been used in cystic cavities in the jaws to accentuate and enhance healing following enucleation. No material has proved to be ideal. In the present study, allogenic demineralized dentin was used in a group of patients with jaw cysts. The observation period varied from 6 to 66 months. The dentin group (33 cases) appeared to have somewhat more immediate postoperative symptoms than the control group (37 cases), but had a lower incidence of operational defects and higher incidence of complete healing of the cyst cavity on radiographic examination.
