Longitudinal studies suggest the psychological difficulties precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic have gradually declined, but our understanding of the factors that predict change in mental health is limited. We evaluated the mental health of Mexican college students during the early stage of the pandemic and 4 months later, as well as predictors of change in students' mental health. Participants were 648 students (71% women, Mage = 21.46) from a private University in Northern Mexico who completed online surveys from May 2020 to September 2020. Students' self-reported levels of mental health symptoms (depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder) significantly decreased from May to September. Poor physical health, more COVID-related worry and higher initial levels of peer social support predicted less change in psychological symptoms. On the other hand, more hours of sleep per night and a pre-existing mental health diagnosis predicted steeper decreases in symptoms. Findings suggest reductions in mental health difficulties that are consistent with theoretical frameworks of resilience among Mexican college students. In addition, results underscore the interplay between physical, psychological and social functioning, and the need for continued monitoring of mental health and intervention efforts that address physical health, sleep and pandemic-related worry in University settings.

Background: Being indigenous, being a woman, and living in poverty are social determinants that contribute to reduced access to healthcare, including reproductive health services. The COVID-19 pandemic might have exacerbated this lag. Objective: This study explored how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the contraceptive use of a group of indigenous Mexican women and adolescents in their community. Methods: Between June and December of 2021, 158 indigenous Mexican women who had experienced recurrent pregnancies were interviewed at two health centers in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas. Participants were either pregnant when they completed the questionnaire or had been pregnant during the COVID-19 pandemic. Women were asked about their contraceptive practices before and during the pandemic. The change in contraceptive practice was estimated using a logistic model. Results: The COVID-19 pandemic reduced contraceptive use by 50%. Among women who wanted contraception, 58% did not receive it. During the pandemic, 77% of previous contraceptive users reported difficulty obtaining contraception, and only 23% sought family planning assistance. Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, indigenous women in the studied community used fewer contraceptive methods and did not use intrauterine devices. Additionally, there was a decline in the percentage of women using contraceptives. These results highlight the impact on indigenous populations and the difficulties they could face in accessing reproductive health services during health emergencies.

Rapid synthesis of carbon-based magnetic materials derived from cobalt and iron metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), ZIF-67, and MIL-100(Fe), by microwave-assisted method, followed by carbonization under a N2 atmosphere is described in this study. The carbon-derived MOFs (CDMs) were evaluated for the removal of the emerging pollutants sulfadiazine (SDZ) and flumequine (FLU) used as veterinary drugs. The study aimed to link the adsorption behavior with their surface properties and elemental composition. C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100(Fe) showed hierarchical porous structures with specific surface areas of 295.6 and 163.4 m2 g-1, respectively. The Raman spectra of the CDMs show the characteristic D and G bands associated with defect-rich carbon and sp2 graphitic carbon, respectively. The CDMs exhibit cobalt species (Co3O4, CoO, and Co) in C-ZIF-67 and iron species (Fe2O3, Fe3O4, and Fe) in C-MIL-100 (Fe) which are related to the magnetic behavior of CDMs. C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100 (Fe) had saturation magnetization values of 22.9 and 53.7 emu g-1, respectively, allowing easy solid-liquid separation using a magnet. SDZ and FLU removal rates on CDMs follow pseudo-second-order kinetics, and adsorption isotherms fit the Langmuir model based on regression coefficient values. Adsorption thermodynamics calculations showed that the adsorption of SDZ and FLU by CDMs was a thermodynamically favorable process. Therefore, these properties of C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100 (Fe) and their regeneration ability facilitate their use as adsorbents for emerging pollutants.

OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis (POD) is an infectious process directed at the structures supporting the teeth. Destruction of alveolar bone is considered one of the main causes of tooth loss in humans and is mediated by the host immune response. Osteoprotegerin (OPG), a protein that inhibits bone resorption by binding to the RANK ligand (RANKL), prevents osteoclastic differentiation. The aim of the study was to determine the plasma levels of OPG in patients with POD. METHODS: a case-control study with forty-nine patients with POD and 49 healthy controls were included in the study. OPG levels were determined by an ELISA test in plasma samples. RESULTS: OPG values (1.6203 ng/mL) were higher in the POD group compared with control group (1.2824 ng/mL). Among the studied groups, we detected significant differences in age, glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1C), and plasma concentration of OPG (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: plasma OPG levels are associated with bone formation and destruction processes, suggesting that OPG acts in a protective manner.

Abstract The aim of this study was the quantification of Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) in periodontal pockets of patients with periodontitis. This is an observational, descriptive, case-control study. Thirty subjects were selected: 15 controls and 15 cases. A periodontal study was conducted following the parameters of AAP 2017 for the diagnosis of periodontal diseases. A sample of saliva and gingival crevicular fluid was obtained from each subject and then analyzed with the Human S1P Elisa kit (MyBioSource #MBS2516132) accordingly to the manufacturer's instructions, in order to verify the presence of S1P and quantify it´s concentration when founded. Results showed a significant difference (p=0.05) between cases and controls. In the case of saliva samples, the concentration of S1P was higher than the ones found in the control group (72.94 ng/mL and 45.12 ng/mL). For GCF, a higher amount of S1P was found in patients with POD (20.09 ng/mL and 15.20 ng/mL). This work raises a possible route of bone metabolism, inflammatory process, and identification of periodontitis through oral quantification of S1P, however, future studies are needed.


Resumen El propósito de este estudio fue la cuantificación de Esfingosina-1-Fosfato (S1P) en las bolsas periodontales de pacientes con periodontitis. Estudio observacional, descriptivo de casos y controles. 30 sujetos fueron seleccionados de los cuales 15 controles y 15 casos. Se realizó un estudio periodontal completo siguiendo los parámetros establecidos por la AAP en 2017 para el diagnóstico de las enfermedades periodontales. Se tomaron muestras de saliva y de líquido crevicular gingival de cada sujeto estudiado y se analizaron con el ELISA kit humano para S1P (MyBiosource #MBS2516132) y de acuerdo con las instrucciones del fabricante, se realizó para cuantificar la presencia d S1P en las muestras estudiadas. Los resultados mostraron diferencia significativa (p=0.05) entre casos y controles. En el caso de las muestras de saliva, la concentración de S1P en controles fue mayor (72.94 ng/mL y 45.12 ng/mL). Para Líquido crevicular gingival, se encontró mayor cantidad de S1P en los pacientes con periodontitis (20.09 ng/mL y 15.20 ng/mL). Este estudio plantea una posible ruta de metabolismo óseo, proceso inflamatorio e identificación de la Periodontitis a través de la cuantificación oral de S1P, sin embargo se necesitan estudios futuros.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) leaf sheath blight was observed for the first time in Sinaloa, Mexico in the summer of 2020. Fungal isolates were obtained from symptomatic tissue in potato dextrose agar. Fusarium spp. were associated with symptomatic plants in 10 sampling sites under field conditions. No root and stalk rot was observed during the sampling period. Analysis of fragments of the translation elongation factor alpha and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit genes indicated that all isolates belong to the Fusarium fujikuroi species complex (FFSC). Five groups were delineated from this complex: F. thapsinum, F. verticillioides, Fusarium sp. (four isolates), Fusarium sp. 4 (Fus4), and Fusarium sp. (Fus16), which is closely related to Fusarium madaense. The morphological characteristics (colony color and morphometry of conidia) of isolates with sequence similarities to those of F. thapsinum and F. verticillioides were in the expected range for these species. The morphology of isolates Fus7a, Fus7b, Fus11, and Fus17, as well as Fus4 and Fus16, were similar to those of the FFSC, specially to F. andiyazi and F. madaense. Inoculations of sorghum with representative isolates of F. thapsinum, F. verticillioides and the unidentified Fusarium species resulted in reddish brown lesions similar to those observed under field conditions; the original isolates inoculated were reisolated fulfilling the Koch's postulates. Although leaf sheaths on sorghum plants were heavily damaged, root and stalk rot were not observed in the greenhouse inoculations or under field conditions. Future research should focus on determining the identity of the unknown Fusarium spp. to design control measures for the disease. This is the first report of Fusarium spp. causing sorghum leaf sheath blight in Mexico.

Chronic consumption of ß-sitosterol-ß-D-glucoside (BSSG), a neurotoxin contained in cycad seeds, leads to Parkinson's disease in humans and rodents. Here, we explored whether a single intranigral administration of BSSG triggers neuroinflammation and neurotoxic A1 reactive astrocytes besides dopaminergic neurodegeneration. We injected 6 µg BSSG/1 µL DMSO or vehicle into the left substantia nigra and immunostained with antibodies against tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) together with markers of microglia (OX42), astrocytes (GFAP, S100ß, C3), and leukocytes (CD45). We also measured nitric oxide (NO), lipid peroxidation (LPX), and proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6). The Evans blue assay was used to explore the blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability. We found that BSSG activates NO production on days 15 and 30 and LPX on day 120. Throughout the study, high levels of TNF-α were present in BSSG-treated animals, whereas IL-1ß was induced until day 60 and IL-6 until day 30. Immunoreactivity of activated microglia (899.0 ± 80.20%) and reactive astrocytes (651.50 ± 11.28%) progressively increased until day 30 and then decreased to remain 251.2 ± 48.8% (microglia) and 91.02 ± 39.8 (astrocytes) higher over controls on day 120. C3(+) cells were also GFAP and S100ß immunoreactive, showing they were neurotoxic A1 reactive astrocytes. BBB remained permeable until day 15 when immune cell infiltration was maximum. TH immunoreactivity progressively declined, reaching 83.6 ± 1.8% reduction on day 120. Our data show that BSSG acute administration causes chronic neuroinflammation mediated by activated microglia, neurotoxic A1 reactive astrocytes, and infiltrated immune cells. The severe neuroinflammation might trigger Parkinson's disease in BSSG intoxication.

BACKGROUND: The bioactive cell-free formulation (BIOF2) for cartilage regeneration has shown a major therapeutic response in severe knee osteoarthritis. However, its effect on patients with mild or moderate stages of the disease has not been studied. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score, minimal clinically important improvement (MCII) and sleep disturbances in mild, moderate, and severe stages of knee osteoarthritis (OA) with the novel cell-free formulation treatment (BIOF2). METHODS: An open-label, nonrandomized, baseline-controlled, parallel group study on patients with mild, moderate, and severe knee OA was conducted to evaluate the effect of intra-articular administration of BIOF2. Clinical improvement was determined through the WOMAC score and MCII, whereas sleep disturbances were measured through a Likert scale questionnaire. RESULTS: At 6 months post-treatment, the mean decrease in the total WOMAC score was 16.4 +/- 4.7%, 49.9 +/- 6.4%, and 62.7 +/- 4.5% in the patients with mild, moderate, and severe disease, respectively (p < 0.001, analysis of variance test). MCII at 6 months was 18%, 78%, and 100% for mild, moderate, and severe disease, respectively (p < 0.001, likelihood-ratio χ2 test). Concerning sleep disturbances, 60% of the patients with severe OA had important sleep problems before beginning treatment, and those difficulties were overcome 6 months after treatment. Only 18% of the patients with mild disease and 16% with moderate disease had serious sleep disturbances at the beginning of the study, and there was slight improvement after treatment. No adverse events were recorded during follow-up. CONCLUSION: BIOF2 generates better patient-reported health outcomes (on pain, stiffness, function, and sleep) in the more severe cases of knee OA.

Benefits of nanotechnology in agriculture include reduced fertilizer loss, improved seed germination rate and increased crops quality and yield. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs), at 1500 ppm, on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) growth. ZnO-NPs were synthetized to produce either spherical or hexagonal morphologies. In this research, we also studied two application methods (foliar and drench) and nanoparticles' (NPs) surface modification with maltodextrin. The results obtained indicate that ZnO-NP-treated tomato plants significantly increased plant height, stem diameter and plant organs (leaves, stem and root) dry weight compared to plants without NP treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to compare levels of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) from subjects with controlled and noncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2D), with and without stage 2 grade B periodontitis (POD2B) versus healthy (H) subjects. METHODS: The levels of both enzymes, from 80 GCF samples collected with PerioPaper strips, were analyzed by a Multiplex/Luminex assay. Five groups were formed, all current patients at the Institutional Dentistry Service, and distributed as follows: two groups of diabetics (one controlled and one poorly controlled); two groups with the previous conditions and diagnosed with POD2B; and one H group. RESULTS: The highest concentration of MMP-9 corresponded to the H group, while the lowest corresponded to the T2D controlled group. Regarding MPO levels, the highest levels were associated with the T2D controlled with POD2B group and the lowest with the T2D controlled group. CONCLUSIONS: No apparent relationship between the elevation of MMP-9 and MPO levels was observed among subjects with T2D, with and without POD2B, compared to H subjects.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to compare variations in quantified tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels in patients with periodontitis stage 2 grade B (POD2B) and/or type 2 diabetes (T2D) and to identify any relationships between this cytokine and these diseases. METHODS: Levels of the cytokine TNF-α in gingival crevicular fluid in patients with POD2B and/or T2D were evaluated. A total of 160 subjects were distributed into four groups: those with POD2B (n=44); those with T2D (n=37); those with POD2B/T2D (n=40); and healthy subjects (n=39). Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and blood glucose (BG) levels were quantified in each subject. Data were collected on body mass index (BMI), loss of insertion (LI), and probe depth (PD). Gingival crevicular fluid samples were collected from the most acutely affected periodontal pocket and gingival sulcus in each subject, and TNF-α was quantified by multiplex analysis. RESULTS: Kruskal Wallis tests was used to identify differences in TNF-α levels, LI, PD, BMI, BG, and HbA1c by group. Differences (p<0.001) were found for LI, PD, BG, and HbA1c. A Spearman test was used to calculate possible correlations between TNF-α levels and LI or PD identified a weak but significant negative correlation of TNF-α with LI (Rho=-0199; p=0.012), and a moderately positive correlation of LI with PD (Rho=0.509; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: No variation was found between TNF-α levels and the presence of POD2B, POD2B/T2D, or T2D, suggesting the absence of any direct relationship between progression of these diseases and TNF-α levels. However, a correlation was present between low TNF-α concentrations and greater LI.

OBJECTIVE: To describe clinical and information needs, identify unmet support services and guide interventions for young breast cancer (BC) patients in Mexico. METHODS: Cross-sectional, qualitative study, using interpretive description methodology. Patients with initial BC diagnosis within 6-12 months prior to enrolment, ≤40 years old and literate were included in focus groups. RESULTS: Twenty-nine patients were included. Expressed needs were classified into the following categories: (a) understanding diagnosis and treatment; (b) treatment side effects; and (c) time, source and communication means. Patients felt their medical team did not provide enough information regarding diagnosis, treatment and relevant side effects related to fertility, menopause and sexuality. Lack of information fuelled uncertainty, distress, anxiety and fear, and could negatively influence treatment decisions. Patients wished that news be communicated considering their own attitude regarding the disease and providing psychological support when necessary, including partners, relatives and friends. They recommended that information should be delivered with an empathic and personalised approach, with take-home educational material to help them recall, comprehend and/or expand verbal information received during medical appointments. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides valuable insight to increase attention on unmet needs of young BC patients and to improve doctor-patient communication to ensure better care.

AIM: We aimed to assess the resistance rates of antimicrobial-resistant, in bacterial pathogens of epidemiological importance in 47 Mexican centers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, we included a stratified sample of 47 centers, covering 20 Mexican states. Selected isolates considered as potential causatives of disease collected over a 6-month period were included. Laboratories employed their usual methods to perform microbiological studies. The results were deposited into a database and analyzed with the WHONET 5.6 software. RESULTS: In this 6-month study, a total of 22,943 strains were included. Regarding Gram-negatives, carbapenem resistance was detected in ≤ 3% in Escherichia coli, 12.5% in Klebsiella sp. and Enterobacter sp., and up to 40% in Pseudomonas aeruginosa; in the latter, the resistance rate for piperacillin-tazobactam (TZP) was as high as 19.1%. In Acinetobacter sp., resistance rates for cefepime, ciprofloxacin, meropenem, and TZP were higher than 50%. Regarding Gram-positives, methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was as high as 21.4%, and vancomycin (VAN) resistance reached up to 21% in Enterococcus faecium. Acinetobacter sp. presented the highest multidrug resistance (53%) followed by Klebsiella sp. (22.6%) and E. coli (19.4%). CONCLUSION: The multidrug resistance of Acinetobacter sp., Klebsiella sp. and E. coli and the carbapenem resistance in specific groups of enterobacteria deserve special attention in Mexico. Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and MRSA are common in our hospitals. Our results present valuable information for the implementation of measures to control drug resistance.

Beta-lactam resistant bacteria, which are commonly resident in tertiary hospitals, have emerged as a worldwide health problem because of ready-to-eat vegetable intake. We aimed to characterize the genes that provide resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics in Enterobacteriaceae, isolated from five commercial salad brands for human consumption in Mexico City. In total, twenty-five samples were collected, grown in blood agar plates, and the bacteria were biochemistry identified and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was done. The carried family genes were identified by endpoint PCR and the specific genes were confirmed with whole genome sequencing (WGS) by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). Twelve positive cultures were identified and their microbiological distribution was as follows: 8.3% for Enterobacter aerogene (n = 1), 8.3% for Serratia fonticola (n = 1), 16.7% for Serratia marcesens (n = 2), 16.7% for Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 2), and 50% (n = 6) for Enterobacter cloacae. The endpoint PCR results showed 11 colonies positive for blaBIL (91.7%), 11 for blaSHV (91.7%), 11 for blaCTX (97.7%), 12 for blaDHA (100%), four for blaVIM (33.3%), two for blaOXA (16.7%), two for blaIMP (16.7%), one for blaKPC (8.3%), and one for blaTEM (8.3%) gen; all samples were negative for blaROB, blaCMY, blaP, blaCFX and blaLAP gene. The sequencing analysis revealed a specific genotype for Enterobacter cloacae (blaSHV-12, blaCTX-M-15, blaDHA-1, blaKPC-2); Serratia marcescens (blaSHV-1, blaCTX-M-3, blaDHA-1, blaVIM-2); Klebsiella pneumoniae (blaSHV-12, blaCTX-M-15, blaDHA-1); Serratia fonticola (blaSHV-12, blaVIM-1, blaDHA-1); and, Enterobacter aerogene (blaSHV-1, blaCTX-M-1, blaDHA-1, blaVIM-2, blaOXA-9). Our results indicate that beta-lactam-resistant bacteria have acquired integrons with a different number of genes that provide pan-resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins, oxacillins, cefalosporins, monobactams, carbapenems, and imipenems.

Models of Parkinson's disease with neurotoxins have shown that microglial activation does not evoke a typical inflammatory response in the substantia nigra, questioning whether neuroinflammation leads to neurodegeneration. To address this issue, the archetypal inflammatory stimulus, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), was injected into the rat substantia nigra. LPS induced fever, sickness behavior, and microglial activation (OX42 immunoreactivity), followed by astrocyte activation and leukocyte infiltration (GFAP and CD45 immunoreactivities). During the acute phase of neuroinflammation, pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-4, and IL-10) responded differentially at mRNA and protein level. Increased NO production and lipid peroxidation occurred at 168 h after LPS injection. At this time, evidence of neurodegeneration could be seen, entailing decreased tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunoreactivity, irregular body contour, and prolongation discontinuity of TH+ cells, as well as apparent phagocytosis of TH+ cells by OX42+ cells. Altogether, these results show that LPS evokes a typical inflammatory response in the substantia nigra that is followed by dopaminergic neurodegeneration.

Arthralgia is a potentially incapacitating condition and a persistent symptom in chronic or acute episodes of Chikungunya fever caused by infection with the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV). To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports on risk factors associated with the intensity of arthralgias in typical acute episodes of the disease. Although a number of studies have reported on risk factors associated with the development of the chronic stage of the disease, smoking habits have not been analyzed. Smoking is an interesting factor to consider since it is the main environmental risk factor for the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a similar disease to CHIKV in many aspects. In the present study, 140 patients infected with CHIKV were assessed for risk factors associated with severe arthralgia intensity in the acute phase (pain of 9/10 on the visual analog scale of 0-10) and moderate to severe intensity (according to the Routine Assessment of Patient Index Data 3) 3.5 months after infection in patients that experienced the chronic phase of the disease. Women and smokers were 2- to 3-times more likely to experience severe pain in the acute and chronic stages. Likewise, the presence of severe arthralgia during the acute disease phase resulted in a 4-fold increased risk for entering the chronic phase. Smoking was a more important risk factor in males compared with females. Smoking resulted in a 20-fold increased risk for severe arthralgia during the acute phase in men, as well as a 10-fold increased risk for developing chronic disease with moderate-to-severe pain 3.5 months after the acute stage. The presence of rash, headache, muscular weakness or conjunctivitis in the acute phase, the presence of diabetes and age >40 years were considered significant risk factors due to their influence on illness progression. In conclusion, smoking and female sex were the main risk factors associated with development of severe joint pain in the acute and chronic phases of Chikungunya fever. These risk factors are similar to those associated with the development and severity of RA, possibly because the two diseases share pathophysiological mechanisms, including elevated interleukin-6 levels.

Uterine cervical cancer (UCC) is one of the main causes of cancer-associated mortality in women. Inflammation has been identified as an important component of this neoplasia; in this context, anti-inflammatory drugs represent possible prophylactic and/or therapeutic alternatives that require further investigation. Anti-inflammatory drugs are common and each one may exhibit a different antineoplastic effect. As a result, the present study investigated different anti-inflammatory models of UCC in vitro and in vivo. Celecoxib, sulindac, nimesulide, dexamethasone, meclofenamic acid, flufenamic acid and mefenamic acid were tested in UCC HeLa, VIPA, INBL and SiHa cell lines. The cytotoxicity of the drugs was evaluated in vitro. Celecoxib, sulindac, nimesulide, mefenamic acid and flufenamic acid presented with slight to moderate toxicity (10-40% of cell death corresponding to 100 µM) in certain cell lines, while meclofenamic acid exhibited significant cytotoxicity in all essayed cell lines (50-90% of cell death corresponding to 100 µM). The meclofenamic acid was tested in murine models (immunodeficient and immunocompetent) of UCC, which manifested a significant reduction in tumor growth and increased mouse survival. It was demonstrated that of the evaluated anti-inflammatory drugs, meclofenamic acid was the most cytotoxic, with a significant antitumor effect in murine models. Subsequent studies are necessary to evaluate the clinical utility of this drug.

Traditional medicine has led to the discovery of important active substances used in several health-related areas. Phytochemicals in Rhoeo discolor extracts have proven to have important antimicrobial activity. In the present study, our group determined the antimicrobial effects of extracts of Rhoeo discolor, a plant commonly used in Mexico for both medicinal and ornamental purposes. We evaluated the in vitro activity of phenolic rich extracts against specifically chosen microorganisms of human health importance by measuring their susceptibility via agar-disc diffusion assay and flow cytometry: Gram-positive Listeria innocua and Streptococcus mutans, Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and lastly a fungal pathogen Candida albicans. Ten different extracts were tested in eight different doses on all the microorganisms. Analytical data revealed a high content of phenolic compounds. Both agar-disc diffusion assay and flow cytometry results demonstrated that Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the least affected by extract exposure. However, low doses of these extracts (predominantly polar), in a range from 1 to 4 µg/mL, did produce a statistically significant bacteriostatic and bactericidal effect on the rest of the microorganisms. These results suggest the addition of certain natural extracts from Rhoeo discolor could act as antibacterial and antimycotic drugs or additives for foods and cosmetics.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Breast cancer is the most common gynecologic malignancy known worldwide. The consumption of certain foods may modify the risk for its development. Peanuts and other seeds have shown anticarcinogenic effects in vitro, but there are a few studies that evaluate the effect of their consumption on the development of breast cancer. The aim of the present study was to determine whether there is an association between the consumption of peanuts, walnuts, and almonds and the development of breast cancer. METHODS: We analyzed 97 patients presenting with breast cancer and 104 control subjects that did not have the pathology (BIRADS 1-2). An analysis of the main clinical characteristics and lifelong seed consumption was carried out. The association between the consumption of these foods and the risk for breast cancer was estimated by odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals, controlling other risk factors, using the Mantel-Haenszel analysis. RESULTS: The high consumption of peanuts, walnuts, or almonds significantly reduced the risk for breast cancer by 2-3 times. This protective effect was not found with low or moderate seed consumption when compared with null consumption. CONCLUSIONS: High consumption of peanuts, walnuts, and almonds appears to be a protective factor for the development of breast cancer.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is currently one of the primary liver diseases. Recent studies have shown a clinical relation between NASH and atherosclerosis. There is much interest in these two diseases because they are both associated with great morbidity and mortality. Inflammation and the overexpression of COX-2 participate in the pathophysiology of the two diseases, and therefore simultaneous treatment is feasible. The role of the four NSAIDs, meclofenamate, mefenamate, flufenamate, and aspirin, was analyzed in a mouse model of NASH, as well as preclinical atherosclerosis induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). Six mouse groups were formed. Five of the groups were fed a high-fat diet for 6 months and one group was fed a standard diet, acting as the normality reference. Of the five groups fed a high-fat diet, four received a NSAID, each of them identified by the specific drug administered. One group received no treatment. Serum markers (cholesterol, triglycerides, ALT, and AST) and histologic changes in the aorta and liver were analyzed for the study. Aspirin significantly reduced the hepaticsteatosis. All the drugs significantly reduced the hepatic inflammatory infiltrate. In relation to atherosclerosis, there were significant reductions in all the study variables with the use of aspirin and flufenamate. The four medications were able to stop steatosis from progressing into steatohepatitis by reducing inflammation. However, aspirin was the most beneficial, simultaneously reducing steatosis, atherosclerosis, and serum cholesterol levels.
