For the first time, this study explored the dominant features of Marine HeatWaves (MHWs) in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea (1982-2020). The spatial extent of MHWs has nearly doubled in the last 24 years. Since 1997, the average number of MHW days in the central parts of the Persian Gulf has increased about 19 times compared to the period 1982-1997. The average number of the detected MHW events has increased by about three times. Simultaneously with the increase in MHWs frequency trend, the trend in the average number of MHW days has also increased. Since 1997, the average number of MHW days in the study area has almost increased by 10 times. The mean duration of the detected MHWs ranged from 5 to10 days. On average, in a major part of the Persian Gulf, about 1-2 MHW events occur annually.

Water quality indices use biological, chemical, and physical data and information to classify the condition of surface waters, ultimately contributing to their management. We used multicollinearity and principal components analyses to develop the Revised Iranian Water Quality Index (RIWQI) as an indicator of agricultural and urban effects in the Karun River Basin of southwestern Iran. Seasonal sampling and analysis of water quality parameters from 54 sites across 18 rivers of the Karun River Basin include fecal coliform, total dissolved solid, phosphate, biological and chemical oxygen demand, nitrate, dissolved oxygen saturation, turbidity, pH, and water temperature. This study updates the previous version of Iranian Water Quality Index (IWQI) by differentially weighting individual variables, refining the main sub-indices, adding phosphate (PO4-), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and temperature (T), and improving the aggregation calculation. Sensitivity testing of the RIWQI resulted in a mean value for discrimination efficiency (DE) > 85.6%, the highest of other indices calculated with the same dataset.

The worldwide occurrence of complex climate-induced ecological shifts in marine systems is one of the major challenges in sustainable bio-resources management. The occurrence of ecological environment-driven shifts was studied in the Southern Caspian Sea using the "shiftogram" method on available fisheries-related (i.e. commercially important bentho-pelagic fish stocks) ecological and climatic variables. As indicators of potential environmentally driven shift patterns we used indices for the North Atlantic Oscillation, the Southern Oscillation, the Siberian High, the East Atlantic-West Russia pattern, as well as Sea Surface Temperature and surface chlorophyll-a concentration. Given the explorative findings from the serial shift analyses, the cascading and serial order of multiple shift events in climatic-ecologic conditions of the southern Caspian Sea suggested a linkage between external forces and dynamics of ecosystem components and structures in the following order: global-scale climate forces lead to local environmental processes, which in turn lead to biological components dynamics. For the first time, this study indicates that ecological shifts are an integral component of bentho-pelagic subsystem regulatory processes and dynamics. Qualitative correspondence of biological responses of bentho-pelagic stocks to climatic events is one of the supporting evidences that overall Caspian ecosystem structures and functioning might have-at least partially-been impacted by global-scale climatic or local environmental shifts. These findings may help to foster a regional Ecosystem-based Approach to Management (EAM) as an integral part of bentho-pelagic fisheries management plans.

Long-term effects of propolis administration on serum biochemical parameters of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated. To determine the possible toxicity and side effects of propolis, fish were fed on diets containing 0, 0.5, 1.5, 4.5 and 9 g propolis/kg diet for 8 weeks. At the end of the experiment, various seric biochemical parameters were determined. Our results showed that all dosages induced no significant alterations in growth parameters and the seric levels of total protein, albumin, globulin, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides and activities of glutamic pyruvic transaminase, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase, when compared to the control group. On the basis of our findings, propolis is a non-toxic substance for rainbow trout and its long-term administration might not have any side effects.
