RESUMO

The security of web applications in an enterprise is of paramount importance. To strengthen the security of applications, the identification and mitigation of vulnerabilities through appropriate countermeasures becomes imperative. The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) Top 10 API Security Risks, 2023 Edition, indicates the prominent vulnerabilities of API security risks. Broken authentication, however, is placed in second position with level-3 exploitability, level-2 prevalence, level-3 detectability, and level-3 technical impact. To mitigate this vulnerability, many mitigation strategies have been proposed by using the cryptographic primitives wherein two techniques, namely hashing and PUF, are used. Some of the proposals have integrated the concepts of hashing and PUF. However, the unnecessarily lengthy and complex mathematics used in these proposals makes them unsuitable for current API-based application scenarios. Therefore, in this paper, the authors propose a privacy-preserving authentication protocol that incorporates the capability of both mechanisms in an easy and low-complexity manner. In addition to overcoming existing limitations, the proposed protocol is tested to provide more security properties over existing schemes. Analysis of their performance has demonstrated that the proposed solutions are secure, efficient, practical, and effective for API-based web applications in an enterprise environment.

RESUMO

A thermostable superoxide dismutase from thermophilic bacterium Anoxybacillus gonensis KA 55 MTCC 12684 which was isolated from Manikaran hotspring of Himachal Pradesh was purified to apparent homogeneity by fractional ammonium sulphate precipitation and anion exchange chromatography. A purification factor of 33.1-fold was achieved, with the purified enzyme exhibiting specific activity of 5758.4 U/mg protein. The purified superoxide dismutase was optimally active at pH 9.0 and displayed stability over a broad pH range of 7.0-10.0 and was stable up to 70 °C. SOD was localized in polyacrylamide gel by activity staining, based on the reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) by superoxide ion. The molecular weight of superoxide dismutase was calculated as 31 kDa by SDS-PAGE. The Km and Vmax values of purified enzyme were found to be 1.002 mM and 14,285.71 U/mg of protein respectively. Tests of inhibitors indicated that the enzyme activity was inhibited by hydrogen peroxide and potassium cyanide but not by sodium azide showing that purified SOD was Cu/ZnSod.

RESUMO

Immobilized enzymes have great significance for industrial processes. In this study whole cell immobilization of Rhodococcus pyridinivorans NIT-36 has been undertaken using chitosan microspheres as an immobilized matrix. R. pyridinivorans NIT-36 harbors a significant intracellular enzyme nitrilase. Chitosan microspheres were generated by supplementing chitosan with glutaraldehyde and results, supported the porous microsphere structure via SEM. The resultant microspheres exhibited cell immobilization capacity of 450mg/g. The immobilized cells exhibited a considerable increase in temperature tolerance at 60°C as compared to free cells. The immobilized microspheres also demonstrated higher substrate tolerance. The immobilized nitrilase retained 80% activity when stored at 4°C for 10 days and retained 50% activity after 7 reuse cycles. It may be concluded that chitosan microspheres are a novel immobilization agent for whole cell immobilization which enhances the stability and reusability of nitrilase enzyme.

RESUMO

This article presents a historical review of national community health worker (CHW) programs in India using a gender- and rights-based lens. The aim is to derive relevant policy implications to stem attrition and enable sustenance of large-scale CHW programs. For the literature review, relevant government policies, minutes of meetings, reports, newspaper articles and statistics were accessed through official websites and a hand search was conducted for studies on the rights-based aspects of large-scale CHW programs. The analysis shows that the CHWs in three successive Indian national CHW programs have consistently asked for reforms in their service conditions, including increased remuneration. Despite an evolution in stakeholder perspectives regarding the rights of CHWs, service reforms are slow. Performance-based payments do not provide the financial security expected by CHWs as demonstrated in the recent Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) program. In most countries, CHWs, who are largely women, have never been integrated into the established, salaried team of health system workers. The two hallmark characteristics of CHWs, namely, their volunteer status and the flexibility of their tasks and timings, impede their rights. The consequences of initiating or neglecting standardization should be considered by all countries with large-scale CHW programs like the ASHA program.
