Use of agro-chemicals in forage crops is restricted due to the fear of direct toxicity to livestock and risk of pesticide residue accumulation in the food chain. Wheat and barley can be used as green fodder and silage, and herbicide residue estimation in green fodder and silage is important for ensuring the safety of dairy cattle. A field experiment was conducted for two years to study pendimethalin residues in the green fodder and silage of wheat and barley. In both cereal crops, pendimethalin (1.125 kg a.i./ha) was applied as pre-emergence along with an unsprayed control. Pendimethalin residues in fodder, silage, and soil were estimated using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). At harvest, pendimethalin residues in fodder and silage of wheat and barley were below the limit of quantification (<0.01 mg/kg) during both crop seasons. Pendimethalin can be safely used for weed control in winter cereals grown for fodder and silage.

The escalating scarcity of irrigation water, transplantation of rice on light-textured soils and labour cost acted as major drivers for the transition towards direct-seeded rice (DSR) cultivation from the conventionally flooded transplanting system. Despite these advantages, DSR is a challenge in light texture soil due to heavy weed infestation and a slight decline in crop yield. The weeds compete for nutrients and have an adverse effect on the growth and yield of crops. Hence, to assess the removal of macro and micronutrients by weeds and direct-seeded rice, a field experiment was carried out on sandy loam soil for two consecutive Kharif seasons (2018 and 2019). Three treatments from rice, namely: DSR under zero tillage (DSR-ZT), DSR under conventional tillage (DSR-CT) and DSR under reduced tillage (DSR-RT) were taken as main plots with three tillage treatments in wheat, namely: Conventional tillage without rice straw (CTW-R), Zero tillage without rice straw (ZTW-R) and Zero tillage with straw as mulch using Happy Seeder (ZTW+R) as subplots, replicated thrice. Among the rice establishment methods, DSR-RT showed an edge in terms of rice grain and straw yield (6.18 and 8.14 Mg ha-1, respectively) as well as macro- and micronutrient uptake by rice. Under management practices, ZTW+R proved as an efficient strategy in terms of yield and nutrient uptake by crops. The contribution of weeds towards biomass production was maximum under the ZTW-R (9.44%) treatment followed by DSR-ZT (7.72%). The nutrient budgeting showed that macro- and micronutrient removal by weeds was minimum under reduced tillage (24.51 and 50.35%, respectively), whereas it was 21.88 and 44.87% when wheat was grown under conventional tillage without rice straw. In overall, the research study concluded that weeds on an average remove 25.65 % macronutrients (N, P, K) and 51.47% of micronutrients (Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn) in DSR under rice-wheat cropping system.

Use of imazethapyr and imazamox has been an environmental concern due to their high persistence, water solubility, residue build up and potential to injure the succeeding crops. Hence, it is necessary to develop effective decontamination technology. In present study, effect of ß-cyclodextrin-chitosan biocomposite (LCD) amendment in soil on dissipation of imazethapyr and imazamox and their phytotoxicity on succeeding crop was evaluated. The influence of different experimental variables viz. extractant solution and its concentration, liquid to soil ratio, amount of soil and soil type on dissipation of imazethapyr and imazamox was assessed through chemical assays. Irrespective of herbicide formulation and application rate, amendment of soils with LCD increased the dissipation rate of herbicide and the residues were below the detection limit (<0.005 µg g-1) within 5 to 15 days in aridisol, entisol, inceptisol A, inceptisol B, inceptisol C and 7 to 21 days in alfisol and vertisol. Amendment of soils with LCD significantly reduced the growth inhibition of Brassica juncea (L.) Czern and improved the soil biological activity as evident from increase in dehydrogenase activity and soil bacterial count. Amendment of soils with LCD could be a promising, economically feasible and environmentally benign soil decontamination strategy for imazethapyr and imazamox contaminated soils.

Dissipation of bispyribac-sodium was estimated in an unamended sandy loam soil and soil amended with rice straw and its biochars in pot culture experiment. Effect of herbicide and amendments on abundance and activity of soil microbial parameters was also assessed by determining soil biological parameters. Amendment type, application rate and soil moisture had differential influence on bispyribac-sodium dissipation and soil's microbial parameters. Amendment of soil with rice straw and its biochars enhanced the dissipation of bispyribac-sodium (DT50 = 7.55-18.44 days) as compared to unamended soil (DT50 = 23.13-28.60 days) and dissipation decreased in this order: rice straw >350BC > 550BC > CBC amended soil > unamended soil. Dissipation of bispyribac-sodium decreased with increase in amendment level of rice straw and its biochars in soil. Irrespective of amendment type and application rate, bispyribac sodium was more persistent under submerged conditions than at field capacity and its DT50 was 10.13 to 28.60 and 7.55-27.14 days, respectively. Dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase activity and bacterial population indicated that application of the organic amendment decreased negative effects of the herbicide on soil enzymatic activities. These findings prove that biostimulation using rice straw and its biochars has the potential to decrease the persistence of bispyribac-sodium and minimize its environmental hazards.

The effect of long-term application of pretilachlor to paddy in rice-wheat cropping system was investigated from 1997 to 2015. Additionally, in 2013, field experiment was also conducted where pretilachlor was applied to paddy field having no background of its application. The residues of pretilachlor were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The average recoveries of pretilachlor from paddy soil, paddy grain and straw samples ranged from 80.7% to 93.8% using HPLC with standard deviation less than 10%. The dissipation rate of pretilachlor in paddy soil followed first-order kinetics and half-life ranged from 9.58 to 21.19 days. In 2015, HPLC was compared with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) for quantification of residues. Average recoveries of pretilachlor using GC-MS/MS from paddy soil, paddy grain and straw samples ranged from 81.4% to 98.3% with standard deviation less than 10%. Both HPLC and GC-MS/MS offered high reproducibility; however GC-MS/MS was more sensitive and the limit of detection was 3.0 and 1.0 ng g-1 for HPLC and GC-MS/MS, respectively. At harvest, the residues of pretilachlor in the paddy soil and crop were below the maximum residue limit and no dangerous accumulation was observed after its prolonged application.
