RESUMO

Thymalin, a polypeptide drug obtained by extraction from cattle thymus, was used in therapy of 44 children with acute and relapsing herpetic stomatitis. Laboratory studies included direct analysis of fluorescent antibodies in buccal mucosa epithelium to verify the clinical diagnosis and enzyme immunoassay of specific antigen in salivary samples before and after therapy. Enzyme immunoassay was also used to assay antibodies to herpes simplex virus in the blood serum over the course of treatment. Immunity status over the course of treatment was assessed by indirect immunofluorescence with monoclonal antibodies used to study lymphocyte subpopulations CD4+ inductor-helpers, CD8+ natural killers, and CD4+/CD8+ ratio. Thumalin therapy was not conducive to a rapid abatement of acute symptoms in stomatitis; but such therapy is justified, for in helps attain a stable antirelapse effect in children at a high risk of developing stomatitis recurrences.

RESUMO

The developed method for rapid diagnosis of ophthalmic herpes is based on quantitative estimation of the results of immunofluorescent studies of the cells in scrapings off the eye conjunctiva. A total of 213 patients were examined with the use of this method; herpes simplex virus antigen was detected in 56.5%, but only in 23.5% of the examinees the antigen levels surpassed 10 and 100-fold the levels of basal virus carriership. Parallel clinical laboratory diagnostic investigations have shown that the second and third stages of the virus antigen accumulation in the conjunctival cells correlated with the severity of the clinical symptoms.

RESUMO

Ultrasonic spraying of drug solutions was used in the treatment of 100 children suffering from acute herpetic stomatitis and its efficacy compared to that of common spraying of drugs in 100 children of the reference group. The results evidence that ultrasonic spraying accelerates cure by 2-3 days and is drug-saving. Interferon was found to be the most effective drug for acute herpetic stomatitis; larifan, used for the first time in the treatment of this condition, was inferior to it, though still effective enough.

RESUMO

Clinical efficacies of ointments containing alpha- and gamma-interferon and characterized by antiviral activity (2.0 x 10(4) IU) were studied. Antiviral effect of these ointments used in the treatment of 168 children suffering from herpetic stomatitis was assessed from the clinical and immunologic viewpoints. Measurements of secretory IgG carried out over the course of therapy evidenced positive changes in local immunity.

RESUMO

The effects of herpes vaccine on immunologic parameters and clinical manifestations of recurrent herpes stomatitis (RHS) were studied. Altogether 70 patients with RHS were examined: 30 before and 40 after vaccination and revaccination. The clinical effect of vaccination was shown to be associated with stimulation of cell-mediated factors of immunity as well as with the desensitizing effect of the vaccine. It is suggested that herpes vaccine is characterized by immunomodulating properties.

RESUMO

Virological examinations of the cerebrospinal fluid and nasopharyngeal washings from 96 patients with influenza and other acute respiratory viral diseases and of the autopsy material from 14 patients who had had symptoms of the involvement of the central nervous system permitted isolation of respiratory viruses and detection of viral antigens in the cerebrospinal fluid and brain tissue. The level of immunoglobulins in the cerebrospinal fluid was found to be increased, however, their concentration did not exceed that in the blood serum which only indicates the possibility of their penetration through the hematoencephalic barrier. This factor, as well as the pattern of pathomorphological changes in the brain tissues indicate the toxicoallergic genesis of meningoencephalitis in acute respiratory diseases.

RESUMO

Comparative studies of various factors of cellular immunity in human chronic herpetic stomatitis (CHS) in periods of relapses and remission of the infection revealed no significant changes in specific cellular immune response, blasttransformation of lymphocytes to herpes simplex virus antigen. At the same time, the indices of nonspecific cellular responsiveness: the rosette-forming activity of T-lymphocytes and the level of leukocyte interferon were markedly reduced in the period of recurrence of the infection and increased as remission developed. The role of immune factors in the pathogenesis of herpes relapses is discussed.

RESUMO

A comparative study of various factors of humoral immunity in human chronic herpes stomatitis (CHS) in periods of relapses and remission of the infection showed the exacerbations of the disease to occur in the presence of complement-fixing (CF) and virus-neutralizing (VN) antibodies in the blood serum the titres of which moderately rose with the progress of the infection. A relapse of the disease occurs during marked decline in the content of secretory IgA and true secretory Sc-IgA, serum and secretory IgG, low levels of serum interferon, and a small rise in titres of 19S specific CF antibodies. Remission comes as these values become normal. Although specific immunological changes do occur in CHS, they are not very marked, whereas the factors of nonspecific host resistance change considerably in close correlation with the periods of relapse and remission of the infection.

RESUMO

Children with croup appearing in the presence of acute viral respiratory diseases (AVRD) show an increase in the IgM content in their blood sera during the first days of the disease followed by a decrease, and an increase in the IgG and IgE levels during the convalescence period. No essential shifts in the content of IgA have been observed. The total content of the immunoglobulins in children with croup, was lowered as compared to that in AVPD patients having no croup which is, probably, of a certain pathogenic importance. The increased content of IgE revealed in the blood sera of children with croup indicates the presence of an allergic component in this disease.
