To unveil possible changes in diatom communities in Cypriot streams over the last ten years or so, we selected samples from the years 2020, 2021, and 2022 for the "recent" dataset (N = 119) and samples from the years 2010 and 2011 for the "historical" dataset (N = 108). Biotic homogenization has become a truly global phenomenon. Here we show that, over the last ten years, in response to increased water temperature, conductivity, and discharge variability due to climate-change, Cypriot stream diatom communities include a higher number of trivial (= widespread, tolerant, and opportunistic), aerial, and thermophilic species, have reduced ß-diversity and increased nestedness. Moreover, IndVal analysis shows that indicator species from the historical dataset were characteristic, often relatively rare species, while the indicators of the recent dataset were a group of typical trivial, eutraphentic, and thermophilic species. As is almost always the case, the diatom communities we studied were subjected to multiple stressors, often affecting them in opposite ways. Besides the increase in trivial species, the reduction in ß-diversity, and the rise in nestedness mentioned above, the diatom assemblages we studied also showed an increase in α-diversity that could be due to a moderate reduction in nutrients in several sites. High-ecological-integrity ecosystems, such as springs, waterfalls, and dripping rock-walls, in particular springs that were shown to be excellent hydrologic refugia in climates heavily affected by climate change, and the stream sites close to them should be carefully protected, as they can be refugia for sensitive and characteristic species that can recolonize the adjacent streams after adverse climatic events.

The diversity of centric diatoms is documented for the transitional zone of the lower part of the Southern Bug River (Ukraine) just before entering the Dnipro-Bug Estuary and compared to earlier results from the upstream sampling sites of the same river system. Benthic samples of the following sites were investigated: north of Mykolaiv City (approximately 5 km), in Mykolaiv City (near Varvarivskyi Bridge), and 5 km south of the city. Twenty-four centric diatom taxa belonging to 11 genera were identified, analysed, and documented by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). Among them, Aulacoseira nivalis is the first report for Ukraine, A. islandica and is the first confirmed record for the studied area since the 1930s. The maximum number of centric diatom taxa found in one station was 21, the minimum 10. Melosira subglobosa was the most common (documented in 57-80% of sites with centric diatoms) and abundant species 7.3-15.7% in relative abundance to all diatom taxa. The discovered diversity of taxa and its comparison with previous results is discussed with regard to the relevance of estuary zones in the research of diatoms.

The objective of the present work was to study the structure of epiphyton in water bodies significantly differing in the degree of their contamination. In the studied water bodies, the concentration of ammonia () accounted for 0.04-74.00 mg/L; nitrite (), 0.002-1.750 mg/L; nitrate (), 0.13-58.00 mg/L; inorganic compounds of phosphorus (Pinorg), 0.041-0.272 mg/L; chloride (Cl-), 34.5-560.5 mg/L; whereas the content of organic matter (DO) was 18.0-81.0 mg O/L. The numbers of algae were determined by a direct count. Biomass was calculated by the count cell volume method. The Generic Diatom Index, the Pantle-Buck saprobic index, and the Shannon index of species diversity were used to analyze algal community structure. This study found that epiphyton responded to heavy pollution with changes in its species richness, taxonomic structure, species composition, quantitative indices, numbers and biomass structure, dominant complex, and ecological spectrum.
