Herpes zoster is an acute viral infection that principally affects the skin. It occasionally may involve the oral region with patients sometimes initially complaining of toothache. Generalized skin involvement by the disease should alert the clinician to the possibility of an underlying malignancy. Dentists should also be aware that the disease is infectious and can be transmitted, especially to susceptible individuals.

A case is reported in which a thyroglossal duct cyst was removed from the anterior portion of the neck of a patient. This lesion may occur after an upper respiratory tract infection. Treatment consists of complete removal of the entire cyst and tract. Without extensive surgery, recurrence can be expected.

A review of the literature and a report of a case of necrotizing sialometaplasia of the hard palate is presented. Because necrotizing sialometaplasia may be misdiagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma or mucoepidermoid carcinoma, it is important that the clinician and pathologist take the necessary precautions to prevent any further mutilative surgery for this benign disease entity.

Two cases of metastatic bronchogenic carcinoma are reported. Possible pathways of dissemination are discussed, along with the symptoms, diagnosis, and management of these lesions.

A case of pulmonary tuberculosis of the tongue is reported, and tuberculosis of the upper airway in a VA Hospital is reviewed. A regimen of triple antituberculous drugs, isoniazid, ethambutol, and rifampin, was prescribed. Repeated radiographs of the chest showed considerable improvement of the pulmonary lesions. The lesion of the tongue was surgically excised as a diagnostic procedure and has not recurred.

A peripheral ameloblastoma in a 58-year-old man has been reported. No evidence as to the origin was shown, although the tumor was in apposition with the basal layer.
