A neonatal hearing screening programme has been established in Pune, India. A total of 2621 babies were screened from August 2005 to August 2007 using otoacoustic emissions (OAE) followed by brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA) for those who referred on the second OAE testing. Two hundred and forty nine babies were referred on the second OAE testing and of these only 52 came back and were further evaluated using BERA. Fifteen of these 52 babies were found to have a significant hearing loss. The significance of these results is discussed.

This report describes a neonate with congenital partial absence of the pericardium associated with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. The patient presented with severe heart failure caused by a hypoplastic left ventricle. The infant died at 15 hours of age because of intractable congestive heart failure. Necropsy revealed, in addition to a hypoplastic left ventricle, a transverse biventricular constriction suggestive of partial absence of the pericardium. In addition to cardiovascular malformations, a left hydronephrosis and a bicornuate uterus was found. We report a rare clinical entity and review the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Syngnathia is a rare anomaly involving soft tissue or bony adhesions between the maxilla and mandible. We review the literature and present a case of syngnathia associated with Van der Woude syndrome. Syngnathia can have very different etiologies, but this has rarely been reported in Van der Woude syndrome. Treatment of this condition is rarely discussed in the literature because of a paucity of case reports. RESULTS: Oral adhesion (syngnathia) in our patient was caused by a mandibular to maxillary fibrous band. Surgical treatment was successful. Clinical implications and review of literature for the treatment of this rare association of syngnathia and Van der Woude syndrome are discussed.
