RESUMO

In this paper, results of research on the reactivities of selected biomass types considering their application in pyrometallurgical processes of metal production are presented. Walnut shells, sunflower husk pellets and spent coffee grounds were selected as biomass materials. Their use as potential reducers in the process of metallurgical slag decopperisation is an innovative approach to this subject. The thermogravimetric findings show that all three tested biomass types are classified as highly reactive. The time to reach maximum reactivity ranges from 1.5 to 3 min and, the lowest value is recorded for the sample of spent coffee grounds. The sample hold time of two hours enables copper content reduction to approx. 1 wt% for practically all the reducers tested. A longer duration of liquid slag contact with the reducer results in a decreased copper content in the slag to a value below 1 wt%. Copper concentrations of 0.5 wt% and lower are observed with a hold time of 4 h. The preliminary results indicate that there is great potential for the use of this type of material in non-ferrous metallurgy, which may translate into replacing fossil raw materials and thus introducing the principles of a sustainable process in this case of metal production.

RESUMO

In relation to the climate policy being introduced, the search for a replacement for solid fossil fuels with renewable raw materials is ongoing. In this study, a potential biomass (sunflower husk pellet) application in the process of copper slag reduction was assessed. For the purpose of raw material characterisation, thermogravimetric tests were carried out and characteristic temperature points were determined with the use of a high-temperature microscope. The slag reduction tests led to the recovery of 97% of copper and a decrease in this metal content in the slag to less than 0.5% Cu, which enables safe storage or use in other industrial branches.

RESUMO

A description of the process of metal evaporation from liquid alloys at an atmospheric pressure has a practical value for both the smelting and remelting of their scraps. The quantities of volatile components that are eliminated in these processes depend on many factors of which the type of melting device, the method and conditions of the process performance, the alloy composition and the kind of applied atmosphere are of the greatest importance. In this paper, the results of the research on zinc evaporation from brass scraps containing 10.53 wt% Zn are presented. The experiments were conducted using the thermogravimetric method at 1080 ÷ 1240 °C in a helium atmosphere. In the research, the levels of zinc removal from copper ranged between 82% and 99%. The values of the overall mass transfer coefficient for zinc kZn, determined based on the experimental data, ranged from 4.74 to 8.46 × 10-5 ms-1. The kinetic analysis showed that the rate of the analysed process was determined by mass transfer in the gas phase.

RESUMO

The article presents the results of a study on metallurgical sludge reduction using electronic waste such as Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). Two aspects were taken into account when selecting such a reducer, namely the environmental aspect and the technological aspect. The research was an attempt to use waste metal-bearing material of which the effective management causes many problems from an environmental point of view. In the technological aspect, the specific chemical composition of this waste was taken into account. Its gasification yields significant amounts of hydrocarbons, which are excellent reducing agents in such process. The separation of these compounds may additionally cause the mixing of the molten slag, which should result in faster separation of the formed metal droplets and the molten slag. In the case of the fragmented PCB (Printed Circuit Board) reducer used in this study, a significant degree of copper removal was achieved, as much as 92%. As the reduction-process time increased, the degree of copper removal also increased. For the 1 h process, the average value of copper removal was 60%, and for the 4.5 h process it was over 70%. The case was the same with the addition of reductant: as the amount of reductant added to the process increased, an increase in copper removal was observed. With the addition of 30 g of the reducing agent (per 65 g of slag), the degree of copper removal was over 90%.

RESUMO

Innovative technologies require the use of materials that meet increasingly high requirements; one such requirement is the purity of metals. In the case of copper, this translates into a parameter related to electrical conductivity. Traditional metal refining technologies have some limitations that can be eliminated through the use of modern melting aggregates. Such solutions include vacuum induction furnaces, comprising an induction furnace with a cold crucible. As part of this work, the possibilities of refining copper and lead alloys were investigated. In addition, the research was carried out with the use of two induction vacuum aggregates, allowing us to compare their effectiveness. The tests were carried out in a pressure range of 10-1000 Pa and at temperatures of 1273-1473 K. The results obtained made it possible to determine the mass transport coefficient of lead from an alloy with copper, and to determine the share of resistance in individual stages of the process. For experiments conducted inside an induction crucible furnace, lowering the working pressure inside the furnace chamber from 1000 to 10 Pa while increasing the temperature from 1323 to 1473 K was accompanied by a drop in the lead concentration inside the alloy of 69 to 96%, compared to its initial mass. For experiments conducted inside a cold crucible furnace, approximate values of lead removal appeared for lower temperatures (1273 to 1323 K), confirming that the analyzed process happens faster in this aggregate.

RESUMO

Using a vacuum during the smelting and refining of alloys removes dissolved gasses, as well as impurities with high vapour pressure. When smelting is carried out in vacuum induction furnaces, the intensification of the discussed processes is achieved by intensive mixing of the bath, as well as an enhanced mass exchange surface (liquid metal surface) due to the formation of a meniscus. This is due to the electromagnetic field applied to the liquid metal. This study reports the removal of zinc from the Al-Zn alloy containing 6.3 wt.%. Zn. The experiments were carried out with the use of two types of metallurgical devices: the VIM and ISM furnaces. For the experiments carried out in the crucible induction furnace, reduction in the operating pressure in the furnace from 1000 Pa to 10 Pa, together with the increase in temperature from 953 K to 1103 K, is accompanied by a decrease in zinc content in the alloy from 6 to 96%, compared with the initial value. Simultaneously, the overall mass transfer coefficient kZn increases from 5.15 × 10-6 to -1.49 × 10-4 ms-1. For the experiments carried out in the furnace with a cold crucible (T = 953 K), a reduction in the operating pressure in the furnace from 1000 Pa to 10 Pa resulted in a decrease in zinc content in the alloy from 18 to 80%, compared with the initial value. For comparison, the experiments carried out in the crucible induction furnace at 953 K showed a reduction in zinc content in the alloy from 6 to 50%, which means that more intense zinc evaporation is seen in the furnace with a cold crucible. Comparison of ISM and VIM technologies in the removal efficiency of the Al-Zn alloy indicates a higher removal efficiency using the first technology, which, using the same conditions, achieves 80% of the removal efficiency of the component.
