BACKGROUND: Veterinary professionals operate at the human-animal-environment interface and are concerned about sustainability issues. This study examined the extent to which sustainability is represented in policy and enacted in veterinary practice settings, as reported by practice representatives. METHODS: An online survey was completed by 392 veterinary centre representatives in the UK and Republic of Ireland to identify existing policies and practices around the environmental impacts of veterinary services and animal husbandry, responsible medicine use, animal welfare and social wellbeing. RESULTS: A minority of respondents were aware of an environmental policy at their practice (17%, 68/392). Many others were undertaking waste reduction initiatives, but wider environmental interventions were infrequently reported. The majority were aware of medicine stewardship and animal welfare policies or guidelines, but a minority reported social wellbeing policies (40%, 117/289) and the provision of advice to clients on the environmental impacts of animal husbandry (31%, 92/300). LIMITATIONS: The bias arising from the small convenience sample of practice representatives and potential discrepancies between the claims of survey respondents and their practices' policies and activities are acknowledged. CONCLUSION: Results depict a value-action gap between the concern of veterinary professionals towards sustainability and the policies and practices at their workplaces. Building on progress in the sector, wider adoption of comprehensive policies and practices, with guidance, could enhance veterinary contributions to the sustainability agenda, in particular to mitigate the environmental externalities of veterinary services and animal care and ensure safe, fair and inclusive workplaces.

In cattle breeding, the development of genomic selection strategies based on single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) interrogation has led to improved rates of genetic gain. Additionally, the application of genomic selection to in-vitro produced (IVP) embryos is expected to bring further benefits thanks to the ability to test a greater number of individuals before establishing a pregnancy and to ensure only carriers of desirable traits are born. However, aneuploidy, a leading cause of developmental arrest, is known to be common in IVP embryos. Karyomapping is a comprehensive screening test based on SNP typing that can be used for simultaneous genomic selection and aneuploidy detection, offering the potential to maximize pregnancy rates. Moreover, Karyomapping can be used to characterize the frequency and parental origin of aneuploidy in bovine IVP embryos, which have remained underexplored to date. Here, we report the use of Karyomapping to characterize the frequency and parental origin of aneuploidy in IVP bovine embryos in order to establish an estimate of total aneuploidy rates in each parental germline. We report an estimate of genome wide recombination rate in cattle and demonstrate, for the first time, a proof of principle for the application of Karyomapping to cattle breeding, with the birth of five calves after screening. This combined genomic selection and aneuploidy screening approach was highly reliable, with calves showing 98% concordance with their respective embryo biopsies for SNP typing and 100% concordance with their respective biopsies for aneuploidy screening. This approach has the potential to simultaneously improve pregnancy rates following embryo transfer and the rate of genetic gain in cattle breeding, and is applicable to basic research to investigate meiosis and aneuploidy.

The introduction of bedding dairy cows on recycled manure solids (RMS) in the UK led to concern by competent authorities that there could be an increased, unacceptable risk to animal and human health. A cross-sectional study was designed to evaluate the microbial content of different bedding materials, when used by dairy cows, and its impact on the microbial content of milk. Data were collected from farms bedding lactating cows on sand (n=41), sawdust (n=44) and RMS (n=40). The mean duration of RMS use prior to sampling was 13months. Total bacterial count, and counts of Streptococcus/Enterococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Bacillus cereus, thermophilic, thermoduric and psychrotrophic bacteria were determined in used bedding and milk. Samples were evaluated for the presence/absence of Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp. and Yersinia enterocolitica. Data on milking practices were collected to investigate their potential to reduce microbial transfer from bedding to milk. There were substantial differences in bacterial counts both within and between bedding materials. However, there were no significant differences between bedding groups in counts in milk for any of the organisms studied, and no significant correlations between bacterial load in used bedding and milk. Fore-milking was associated with a reduced total bacterial count in milk. Dipping teats with disinfectant and drying, prior to milking, was associated with lower numbers of Streptococcus/Enterococcus spp. in milk. Disinfecting clusters between milking different cows was associated with a reduction in thermophilic and psychrotrophic counts in milk. This study did not provide evidence that use of RMS bedding increased the risk of presence of Y. enterocolitica, Salmonella spp. or L. monocytogenes in milk. However, the strength of this conclusion should be tempered by the relatively small number of farms on which Y. enterocolitica and Salmonella spp. were isolated. It is concluded that, despite the higher bacterial load of RMS, its use as bedding for lactating dairy cows need not be associated with a higher bacterial load in milk than the use of sand or sawdust. However, this finding must be interpreted in the light of the relatively recent introduction of RMS as a bedding material on the farms studied. Teat preparation provides a control point for the potential transfer of microorganisms from bedding to milk. The detection of zoonotic pathogens in a small proportion of milk samples, independent of bedding type, indicates that pasteurisation of milk prior to human consumption remains an important control measure.
