RESUMO

What are the mental health status and active treatment needs of nursing home residents? A stratified random sample of 828 residents in 25 facilities serving Medicaid recipients was assessed for levels of physical and psychosocial functioning. Although 91.2% had sufficiently high levels of medical and physical care needs to justify nursing home placement, 79.6% also had moderate to intense needs for mental health care. Older residents, relative to their younger counterparts, had more intense medical and mental health care needs. It was also found that psychiatric diagnosis was a poor indicator of mental health service needs, particularly among elderly individuals.

RESUMO

The zooplankton community of a small pond changed markedly with temporal variation in predation pressure. Long term changes in zooplankton community structure occurred following the replacement of planktivorous fish by phantom midge (Chaoborus americanus) larvae as the predominant predator of zooplankton. The interannual changes following the establishment of Chaoborus included the apparent or near extinction, of species ill adapted to the new predation pressure and the successful colonization of well adapted species. Seasonal changes in the species composition and size distribution of the zooplankton community correlate with temporal variation in predation intensity associated with temperature-activity patterns of the predator or changes in the stage structure of the predator population.

RESUMO

We determined whether enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli diarrhea could be diagnosed by direct examination of stools for heat-labile (LT) and heat-stable (ST) enterotoxins. The Y-1 adrenal cell and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) detected LT in 85 and 93%, respectively, of stool specimens obtained from adults with acute diarrhea from whom an LT- and ST-producing organism had been isolated. Furthermore, the ELISA assay detected LT in 8 of 35 stool specimens from which no LT-producing E. coli had been isolated. The infant mouse assay was utilized to detect ST in these stool specimens and was found to be an insensitive method, showing positive results in only 36% of the specimens from which an ST-producing organism was isolated. Further studies are warranted to determine the diagnostic value of direct detection of LT in stools, especially by the ELISA method.
