RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare stepping performance during obstacle clearance in younger and older women, and to examine the relationship between lower extremity strength and stepping performance during obstacle clearance in older women. DESIGN: Correlational study. SETTING: A small community. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-four older women (mean age = 74.4), and 16 younger women (mean age = 20.7). The older participants lived independently in the community and were able to walk unaided. MEASUREMENTS: Lower extremity muscle strength, measures of stepping performance including reaction time, movement time, extent of obstacle clearance, time to clear obstacle, among others. MAIN RESULTS: The older women were far slower in stepping than the younger women. Toe trajectories differed between older and younger women during the initial portion of the step. The younger women tended to lift the toe straight up, whereas the older women tended to move the toe backward, away from the obstacle, passing farther from the obstacle when the toe cleared the obstacle height. There was little, if any, association between relative lower extremity strength and stepping performance during obstacle clearance in older women. CONCLUSIONS: Dramatic differences in the speed of volitional stepping performance were found between younger and older women. Among the older women, lower extremity strength was not related to volitional stepping performance.

The steroid aldosterone plays a major role in the maintenance of total body sodium homeostasis and also contributes to cardiovascular pathophysiology by mediating cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis. In addition to classical adrenal production of aldosterone, endogenous tissue production of aldosterone has been observed in various organs; aldosterone biosynthesis in cardiac tissues, however, remains highly controversial. The current study provides a comprehensive evaluation of steroid hormone biosynthethic capabilities in multiple tissues from two distinct rat strains under unstimulated and stimulated conditions. Panels of tissues from Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rats were probed for 11 beta-hydroxylase (P45011beta) and aldosterone synthase (P450aldo) by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Under unstimulated conditions, cardiac P45011beta and P450aldo were detected only in Wistar rats. Angiotensin II (100 microg/day) stimulated myocardial expression of both enzymes in both strains. Cerebral cortex and mesenteric artery message levels in both strains was reduced by angiotensin II. These data demonstrate the potential for local steroid synthesis in vascular, cardiac, renal, and neuronal tissues, and that biosynthesis of non-adrenal aldosterone may be differentially regulated between strains. This variability may thus resolve in part or whole the current controversy over the existence of non-adrenal steroidogenic systems.

RESUMO

The recent Surgeon General's report (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1996) promotes regular physical activity to enhance health. A possible mechanism by which physical activity contributes to a healthy life span is via enhanced antioxidant status. The purpose of this paper is to summarize findings from human studies on life span, health, antioxidants, and the effectiveness of physical activity as a natural antioxidant booster. Epidemiological studies concur that some antioxidants are inversely related to mortality. A single bout of exercise elevates some antioxidant enzyme and coenzyme activities. Regular physical activity enhances some antioxidants; however, strenuous exercise may diminish others. Results generally show that antioxidants play a mediating role in the way in which physical activity positively affects a healthy life span.
