RESUMO

Ebolaviruses cause outbreaks of haemorrhagic fever in Central and West Africa. Some members of this genus such as Ebola virus (EBOV) are highly pathogenic, with case fatality rates of up to 90%, whereas others such as Reston virus (RESTV) are apathogenic for humans. Bombali virus (BOMV) is a novel ebolavirus for which complete genome sequences were recently found in free-tailed bats, although no infectious virus could be isolated. Its pathogenic potential for humans is unknown. To address this question, we first determined whether proteins encoded by the available BOMV sequence found in Chaerephon pumilus were functional in in vitro assays. The correction of an apparent sequencing error in the glycoprotein based on these data then allowed us to generate infectious BOMV using reverse genetics and characterize its infection of human cells. Furthermore, we used HLA-A2-transgenic, NOD-scid-IL-2γ receptor-knockout (NSG-A2) mice reconstituted with human haematopoiesis as a model to evaluate the pathogenicity of BOMV in vivo in a human-like immune environment. These data demonstrate that not only does BOMV show a slower growth rate than EBOV in vitro, but it also shows low pathogenicity in humanized mice, comparable to previous studies using RESTV. Taken together, these findings suggest a low pathogenic potential of BOMV for humans.

RESUMO

To examine the validity of the Children's Form of the Picture-Frustration (P-F) Study, the instrument was administered to 245 children in Grades 1 through 6. Children were also administered the Make A Picture Story (MAPS) and the Response Hierarchy Measure. Teachers rated children's aggression on the Conners Teacher Rating Scale. Hostile responses on the P-F Study were related to self-reported verbal and physical aggression in conflict situations but were unrelated to teachers' ratings of aggressive behavior. Hostile responses were exhibited more often by boys than girls. Responses on the measure were related to children's fantasy patterns. Results supported the validity of the P-F Study as a measure of children's thought content in response to frustration.

RESUMO

The effect of cesarean section on the condition at birth in cases of preterm breech presentation was studied in consecutively delivered infants in two time periods. Delivery was rarely (8%) by cesarean section in 1961 to 1974 and usually (89%) by cesarean section in 1978 to 1984. The increased cesarean rate did not reduce the incidence of severe depression, which was double that in control cases with cephalic presentations in both periods. Breech births did not have a higher mortality rate than cephalic births in either period; birth trauma and encephalopathy were similar in both periods. Cesarean section was therefore not found to reduce either the incidence of depression at birth or the mortality. However, head entrapment was responsible for the deaths of seven of 55 live-born infants delivered vaginally at 25 to 28 weeks' gestation, all weighing less than 1000 gm. Although cesarean section is at present performed least often among these extremely premature infants, it is in these cases that it may prove most beneficial.

RESUMO

A strongly right-handed man developed sudden mutism and left hemiplegia 2 days after a myocardial infarct. Evaluation 6 1/2 years later revealed persistent Broca's aphasia. There was no clinical, CT, or EEG evidence of left brain injury or disease. This case is another example of dissociation of cerebral dominance for speech and handedness. However, the severe and persistent language disorder is rare. The paucity of documented case reports supports the traditional view of strong interdependence of handedness and speech cerebral lateralization.

RESUMO

Purified proteins have been isolated from the sera and livers of mice. These proteins are antigenically identical but share antigenic determinants in common with human C-reactive protein and do not share antigenic determinants in common with mouse or human immunoglobulins. The proteins interact with C-polysaccharide, are precipitated by calcium ions, migrate electrophoretically with gamma mobilities, and have isoelectric points of 4.8 and 5.62. Since these properties are characteristic of C-reactive protein of man, monkey, rabbit and dog, the pure proteins isolated from mice are designated mouse C-reactive protein.
