RESUMO

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study was designed to evaluate the radiographic diagnostic method to detect any abnormal findings and differentiate stable burst fractures with compression fractures at thoracolumbar spine. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate diagnostic sensitivity of radiographic analysis and confirm the effectiveness of the radiographic diagnostic methods to differentiate stable burst fractures with pure compression fractures. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: A data showed that the diagnostic sensitivity using radiographic analysis was 83%. The greater sensitivity was obtained at high posterior superior vertebral angle and PSVA/PIVA > 1.3. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-one patients with thoracolumbar spine fractures were evaluate to differentiate stable burst fractures with pure compression fractures. All patients were taken X-ray and CT. The PSVA(Posterior superior vertebral angle), PIVA(Posterior inferior vertebral angle), PSVA/PIVA were checked using lateral plain radiographs during follow-up period, and the final data was analysed using radiological & statistical methods. RESULTS: Middle column failure of stable burst fractures was greatly observed at high PSVA(especially >100degree) and high PSVA/PIVA ratio(> 1.3). CONCLUSION: The radiographic analysis using PSVA(Posterior superior vertebral angle), PIVA(Posterior inferior vertebral angle), PSVA/PIVA might be the one of useful methods to differentiate stable burst fractures with pure compression fractures at thoracolumbar spine during follow-up period.

RESUMO

The Levels of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase in serum were measured during the first 48 hours of life in 67 normal term infants, to find out normal values of them. The study group was devided into 3 categories, being group of 1-6 hours of life, of 7-24 hours of life and of 25-47hours of life respectively. The results obtained are as follows: 1. During 1-6hours of life, the average level of serum calcium is 4.34+/-0.38mEq/L,magnesium:1.61+/-0.25mEq/L, phosphorus:5.43+/-0.46mg%, alkaline phosphatase:187+/-52U/I. 2. During 7-24 hours of life, the average level of serum calcium is 4.16+/-0.28mEq/L,magnesium:1.46+/-0.23mEq/L, phosphorus:6.03+/-0.62mg%, alkaline phosphatase:161+/-52U/I. 3. During 25-48 hours of the average level of serum calcium is 4.05+/-0.25mEq/L, magnesium:1.55+/-0.16mEq/L, phosphorus:7.16+/-0.51mg%, alkaline phosphatase:148+/-26U/I. 4. During the first 48 hours of life, there is a decrease in serum calcium, while the serum phosphorus is increased.

RESUMO

A 42 day-old male infant visited to our emergency room with chief complaints of convulsion. Prenatal and birth histories were unremarkable. The patient appeared well except persistent jaundice and had no signs of increased intracranial pressure. The head circumference at birth was not measured. The head circumference at 42 days was 39cm(50th percnntile) At the age of 42 days, tonic convulsion developed suddenly and soon fell into coma. The patient died, 20 hours after arrival. Postmortem examiation revealed a large necrotic tumor mass in the left lateral ventricle of the cerebral hemispheres. The tumor growths were histologically composed of partly papillary but most undifferentiated carcinoma arising from the choroid plexus of the left lateral ventricle. In addition to celluar anaplasia many mitoses were observed. The tumor masses invaded periventricular while matter and also extended to subarachnoid space of the cerebral and cerebellar hemispheres. The central part of the tumor was undergoing necrosis and massive hemorrhage which extended into surrounding brain parenchyme.
