Thiamphenicol in the treatment of extragenital gonorrhea.

One hundred ninety-two cases of gonorrhea, of which 23 were extragenital only or both genital and extragenital, were treated with a single oral dose of thiamphenicol (2.5 g in patients weighing less than or equal to 80 kg; 3 g in patients weighing greater than 80 kg). Of the 178 patients whose follow-up was possible, 176 patients (98.9%), including all 23 with extragenital infection (seven pharyngeal and 16 anorectal), recovered completely. The efficacy of the regimen compared favorably with that of other regimens currently used for the treatment of gonorrhea.

Treatment of retroauricular keratinous cysts.

The excision method for the removal of keratinous cysts was modified and used for the treatment of such cysts in the retroauricular region. In 14 patients, 17 lesions were excised in this fashion with good to excellent results. The reasons for choosing this therapeutic modality and its modifications are discussed. In our opinion, the excision technique described here is the best treatment for keratinous cysts in this common location.

After a brief review of the literature on pharyngeal and anorectal gonorrhea, the authors report the incidence of this disease among 498 patients consulting for known or suspected venereal disease from January 1 to December 31 1981. 192 cases of gonorrhoea, of which 23 had extragenital localization, were treated with thiamphenicol (Urfamycine) in a single dose (2.5 g orally or 3 g in patients weighing over 80 kg). Of the 178 patients for whom follow-up was possible, recovery was obtained in 176 (98.9%). All the 23 patients with extragenital infection (7 with pharyngeal gonorrhoea and 16 with anorectal gonorrhoea) recovered completely. The efficacy of this treatment is discussed and compared with that of other antibiotics currently used in gonorrhea.

In vitro responses of proliferating and non-proliferating cells to high doses of 17 beta-estradiol: cytochemical study.

The authors studied the effect of 17 beta-estradiol on the proliferation in vitro of chick embryo fibroblasts and human macrophages by microdensitometry, cytofluorometry, and autoradiography. For fibroblasts 17 beta-estradiol shortens the duration of the preparing period to mitosis, particularly of the synthetic phase (S) and has no effect on the duration of mitosis. For macrophages, which have temporarily lost their mitotic capacity, 17 beta-estradiol cannot induce mitotic division.

Cutaneous manifestations of thrombocythaemia are caused by vascular lesions, either haemorrhagic or thrombotic, affecting above all the microcirculation of the extremities. The authors report a case of thrombocythaemia associated with myelofibrosis discovered by ischaemic lesions on the toes which appeared at the beginning of PUVA therapy for psoriasis. The type of vascular lesions generally depends on the platelet count. In the presence of these cutaneous manifestations, the determination of both platelet counts and functions may orient the diagnosis toward a myeloproliferative syndrome.

[Is the BK mole syndrome always an autosomal dominant trait?]. / Le BK mole syndrome est-il toujours de transmission autosomique dominante?

After a brief review of the characteristics of familial malignant melanoma, the authors summarize the literature about the BK mole syndrome. The clinical and histological features of this dermatosis are described. Three personal cases are also reported. The latter tend to demonstrate a certain genetic heterogeneity, while in the literature the BK mole syndrome has been described as an autosomal dominant trait.

Association of angiolymphoid hyperplasia (pseudopyogenic granuloma type) and follicular mucinosis in the same lesion on the scalp of a 30-year-old woman. A similar case has been reported recently.
