RESUMO

The utilization of InP-based quantum dots (QDs) as alternative luminescent nanoparticles to cadmium-based QDs is actively pursued. However, leveraging their luminescence for solid-state applications presents challenges due to the sensitivity of InP QDs to oxidation and aggregation-caused quenching. Hence, an appealing strategy is to protect and disperse InP QDs within hybrid materials. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a promising solution as readily available crystalline porous materials. Among these, MOF-5 (composed of {Zn4O}6+ nodes and terephthalate struts) can be synthesized under mild conditions (at room temperature and basic pH), making it compatible with InP QDs. In the present work, luminescent InP/ZnS QDs are successfully incorporated within MOF-5 by two distinct methods. In the bottle around the ship (BAS) approach, the MOF was synthesized around the QDs. Alternatively, in the ship in the bottle (SIB) strategy, the QDs were embedded via capillarity into a specially engineered, more porous variant of MOF-5. Comparative analysis of the BAS and SIB approaches, evaluating factors such as operational simplicity, photoluminescence properties, and the resistance of the final materials to leaching were carried out. This comparative study provides insights into the efficacy of these strategies for the integration of InP/ZnS QDs within MOF-5 for potential solid-state applications in materials chemistry.

RESUMO

This study presents the intercalation into Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs) of two sulfonated organic molecules featuring the mesoionic triazolium scaffold. These sulfonated fluorophores exhibited excellent solubility in aqueous basic solutions, facilitating their compatibility with the synthesis of LDHs through coprecipitation methods. We applied the size-matching interlayer space (SMIS) approach by substituting a portion of a mono- or dianionic surfactant used in LDH preparation by the sulfonated fluorophore, we aimed to match the size of the luminescent interleaved guest effectively. Our investigation focused on two anion spacers: the classic monoanionic dodecyl sulfate (DS) and the dianionic phenylene dipropionate (PPA). Our results indicated that the latter spacer allowed a more efficient insertion of the fluorescent guest. Thermal resistance analysis underscored the robustness of the final hybrid materials, suggesting a promising design strategy for luminescent materials when applied in diverse applications.

RESUMO

Starting from imidazolium chlorides bearing bulky nitrogen donors, a series of four complexes, mainly [Cu(C^N)Cl]n coordination polymers were obtained directly as luminescent species by simple filtration from the aqueous reaction medium, highlighting a simple, eco-friendly, robust and reproducible synthetic procedure. Additionally, we have shown on the most efficient example that chloride could be exchanged very easily by other halides/pseudohalides (Br-, I-, NCS-, N3-) allowing to slightly modulate the emitted colour while conserving the polymeric structure, except for azide for which a dimer was obtained. The combination of chemical analyses, of photoluminescence studies in the solid state including quantum yield measurement and X-ray diffraction on single crystals and as-synthesized microcrystalline powders highlighted that the polymeric luminescent species was indeed obtained directly by simple filtration and that no major alteration of the structure was observed upon recrystallisation. Samples of all polymeric complexes displayed remarkable stability towards air oxidation remaining unchanged upon storage for several months and partially retaining their photoluminescence properties even after a thermal treatment at 100 °C for 24 h.

RESUMO

The architecture of Zn-Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs), organo-modified with bola-amphiphiles molecules, is matching its interlayer space to the size of narrow-band red-emitting InP/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) to form original high-performance functional organic-inorganic QD-bola-LDH hybrids. The success of size-matching interlayer space (SMIS) approach is confirmed by X-ray diffraction, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), TEM, STEM-HAADF, and photoluminescence investigations. The QD-Bola-LDH hybrid exhibits a photoluminescence quantum yield three times higher than that of pristine InP/ZnS QDs and provides an easy dispersion into silicone-based resins, what makes the SMIS approach a change of paradigm compared to intercalation chemistry using common host structures. Moreover, this novel hybrid presents low QD-QD energy transfer comparable to that obtained for QDs in suspension. Composite silicone films incorporating InP/ZnS (0.27 wt%) QD-bola-LDH hybrids further show remarkable improved photostability relative to pristine QDs. An LED overlay consisting of a blue LED chip and silicone films loaded with QD-bola-LDH hybrids and YAG:Ce phosphors exhibits a color rendering index close to 94.

RESUMO

Over the last decade, upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) have been widely investigated in nanomedicine due to their high potential as imaging agents in the near-infrared (NIR) optical window of biological tissues. Here, we successfully develop active targeted UCNP as potential probes for dual NIR-NIR fluorescence and radioactive-guided surgery of prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)(+) prostate cancers. We designed a one-pot thermolysis synthesis method to obtain oleic acid-coated spherical NaYF4:Yb,Tm@NaYF4 core/shell UCNP with narrow particle size distribution (30.0 ± 0.1 nm, as estimated by SAXS analysis) and efficient upconversion luminescence. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) ligands bearing different anchoring groups (phosphate, bis- and tetra-phosphonate-based) were synthesized and used to hydrophilize the UCNP. DLS studies led to the selection of a tetra-phosphonate PEG(2000) ligand affording water-dispersible UCNP with sustained colloidal stability in several aqueous media. PSMA-targeting ligands (i.e., glutamate-urea-lysine derivatives called KuEs) and fluorescent or radiolabelled prosthetic groups were grafted onto the UCNP surface by strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC). These UCNP, coated with 10 or 100% surface density of KuE ligands, did not induce cytotoxicity over 24 h incubation in LNCaP-Luc or PC3-Luc prostate cancer cell lines or in human fibroblasts for any of the concentrations evaluated. Competitive binding assays and flow cytometry demonstrated the excellent affinity of UCNP@KuE for PSMA-positive LNCaP-Luc cells compared with non-targeted UCNP@CO2H. Furthermore, the binding of UCNP@KuE to prostate tumour cells was positively correlated with the surface density of PSMA-targeting ligands and maintained after 125I-radiolabelling. Finally, a preliminary biodistribution study in LNCaP-Luc-bearing mice demonstrated the radiochemical stability of non-targeted [125I]UCNP paving the way for future in vivo assessments.

RESUMO

(1) Background: Nanomedicine has recently emerged as a promising field, particularly for cancer theranostics. In this context, nanoparticles designed for imaging and therapeutic applications are of interest. We, therefore, studied the encapsulation of upconverting nanoparticles in mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles. Indeed, mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles have been shown to be very efficient for drug delivery, and upconverting nanoparticles are interesting for near-infrared and X-ray computed tomography imaging, depending on the matrix used. (2) Methods: Two different upconverting-based nanoparticles were synthesized with Yb3+-Er3+ as the upconverting system and NaYF4 or BaLuF5 as the matrix. The encapsulation of these nanoparticles was studied through the sol-gel procedure with bis(triethoxysilyl)ethylene and bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane in the presence of CTAB. (3) Results: with bis(triethoxysilyl)ethylene, BaLuF5: Yb3+-Er3+, nanoparticles were not encapsulated, but anchored on the surface of the obtained mesoporous nanorods BaLuF5: Yb3+-Er3+@Ethylene. With bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane, BaLuF5: Yb3+-Er3+ and NaYF4: Yb3+-Er3+nanoparticles were encapsulated in the mesoporous cubic structure leading to BaLuF5: Yb3+-Er3+@Ethane and NaYF4: Yb3+-Er3+@Ethane, respectively. (4) Conclusions: upconversion nanoparticles were located on the surface of mesoporous nanorods obtained by hydrolysis polycondensation of bis(triethoxysilyl)ethylene, whereas encapsulation occurred with bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane. The later nanoparticles NaYF4: Yb3+-Er3+@Ethane or BaLuF5: Yb3+-Er3+@Ethane were promising for applications with cancer cell imaging or X-ray-computed tomography respectively.

RESUMO

Azo dyes are widely used in industries and their release in the environment contributes to the pollution of effluents. The authors aim to develop a new eco-friendly water treatment method for the degradation of azo dyes based on in situ magnetic separation and immobilisation of bacterial cells. The immobilisation was achieved using superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and offers the possibility of reusing bacteria by magnetic separation for several degradation cycles. The iron-oxide nanoparticles were synthesised by reverse co-precipitation. The Gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis were immobilised using iron-oxide nanoparticles by adsorption and then separated with an external magnetic field. Transmission electron microscopy observation showed that the particles' diameter was ∼20 nm with a narrow size distribution. Moreover, the iron-oxide nanoparticles were adsorbed onto the surface in order to coat the cells. B. subtilis has proved its ability to decolorise and degrade several azo dyes at different values of pH, with the highest decolorisation rate for Congo red. Furthermore, immobilised cells have a degradation activity similar to that of free cells. The system provided a degradation rate up to 80% and could be reused for seven batch cycles.

RESUMO

A new luminescent composite film resulting from the dispersion of luminescent organic dyes in a single-layered hydroxide (SLH)-type inorganic matrix has been developed. Two fluorescent organic dyes emitting visible light upon blue LED excitation were investigated in this study: dicyanomethylene (DCM) and pyranine (HPTS). These dyes exhibit broad emission bands that cover a large part of the visible spectrum. The concept developed in our work consisted in keeping SLH in its wet form to ensure a good dispersion of the fluorescent dyes prior to immobilizing the hybrid materials in a silicone polymer to achieve luminescent composite films. We demonstrate that these coatings stacked upon each other and placed above a blue LED lead to white-light emission with suitable photometric parameters for applications in lighting or display devices: colour temperature of 5409 K and colour rendering index (CRI) of 81.

RESUMO

In this article, we demonstrate that each functional group of ureasil organic-inorganic hybrid (OIH) materials can act as a specific coordination site for a given active guest species, hence allowing the possibility of combining different functional properties. To illustrate this concept, the sol-gel process was used to produce diurea cross-linked siloxane-polyethylene oxide (U-PEO) and siloxane-polypropylene oxide (U-PPO) hybrid host frameworks with similar molecular weights (1900 and 2000 g mol-1 for PEO and PPO, respectively), with Li+ and Eu3+ as active guest ions providing ionic conduction and photoluminescence (PL) properties, respectively. Comparison of Fourier transform infrared spectra and small-angle X-ray scattering results for single-doped (using Li+ or Eu3+) and co-doped (using Li+ and Eu3+) U-PEO and U-PPO hosts showed that in every case, there was specific coordination of Eu3+ by the carbonyl group of the urea bridge and of Li+ by ether-type oxygen of the PEO and PPO chains. Optical analyses demonstrated that loading with Li+ did not affect the luminescence properties of the Eu3+-loaded OIH. Although loading with Eu3+ had a small effect on ionic transport, co-doping with Li+ ions ensured macroscopic ion-conduction of the transparent and luminescent hybrid material. The results suggested that the combination of both properties in a transparent elastomeric material could be useful for the development of multifunctional devices. The results suggested that the combination of both properties in a transparent elastomeric material could be useful for the development of multifunctional polyelectrolytes applied in the field of dual luminescent devices such as photoelectrochromic smart windows.

RESUMO

Uniform, hydrophilic 50 nm diameter Nd3+-doped Ba0.3Lu0.7F2.7 nanospheres are synthesized at 120 °C using a singular one-pot method based on the use of ethylene glycol as solvent, in the absence of any additive. The composition and crystal structure of the undoped material are analyzed in detail using ICP and XRD, which reveals a BaF2 cubic crystal structure that is able to incorporate 70 mol% of Lu ions. This finding contrasts with the reported phase diagram of the system, where the maximum solubility is around 30 mol% Lu. XRD proves as well that the Ba0.3Lu0.7F2.7 structure is able to incorporate Nd3+ ions up to, at least 10 mol%, without altering the uniform particles morphology. The Nd-doped particles exhibit near-infrared luminescence when excited at 810 nm. The maximum emission intensity with the minimum concentration quenching effect is obtained at 1.5% Nd doping level. X-ray computed tomography experiments are carried out on powder samples of the latter composition. The sample significantly absorbs X-ray photons, thus demonstrating that the Nd3+-doped Ba0.3Lu0.7F2.7 nanospheres are good candidates as contrast agents in computed tomography.

RESUMO

Acetylacetone has been used as a chemical modifier for the synthesis of undoped and Tb(3+)-doped Y(3)Al(5)O(12) powders. A systematic investigation concerning its influence on the structural and morphological properties of amorphous and crystallized samples has been carried out. These properties have been comparatively studied by means of X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, SEM, XAS and SAXS. (27)Al NMR and EPR experiments have been performed to complete the study. The combined results have evidenced that acetylacetone promotes organic groups departure during calcination, entailing a better structural organization at lower temperatures compared with unmodified powders. Structuration has been proven to occur at short-scale range until a 600 degrees C heating treatment before being extended by coalescence at higher temperatures. Finally, the presence of acac ligands on the alkoxides leads to a monomer-cluster aggregation process, and thus to a more open network.

RESUMO

4-Triazolyl-dipicolinic acids, prepared efficiently by CuAAC, proved to act as efficient antennae for optical lanthanide probes containing Eu(3+) or Tb(3+), under linear and non linear excitations (one, two and three photons provided by laser induced luminescence). The versatility offered by the substitution of the triazole subunit is, in addition, useful for covalent linkage to slide glass providing luminescent films.

RESUMO

Transparent BaTiO(3):Eu(3+) films were prepared via a sol-gel method and dip-coating technique, using barium acetate, titanium butoxide, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as modifier viscosity. BaTiO(3):Eu(3+) films ~500 nm thick, crystallized after thermal treatment at 700 masculineC. The powders revealed spherical and rod shape morphology. The optical quality of films showed a predominant band at 615 nm under 250 nm excitation. A preliminary luminescent test provided the properties of the Eu(3+) doped BaTiO(3).

RESUMO

New weapons to fight cancer are constantly needed. Among chemotherapeutics, anti-cancer metal-drugs have enjoyed a long and successful history since the discovery of the benchmark cisplatin. Advances in metal-drug discovery have motivated chemists to build plethora of complex structures. Among them, a novel area is emerging. This article presents a survey of the metal-N-Heterocyclic Carbenes (Ag(I), Au(I), Pd(II) and Cu(I)-NHCs) as potential anti-cancer agents. Most of the metal-NHCs considered display higher cytotoxicities than the reference metallo-drug cisplatin. Some of them are even selective for particular cell lines. Their mechanisms of action at the cellular level are further discussed, showing that the nature of the metal is of great importance. All these promising results demonstrate that this approach deserves more attention and work.
